What the Fark???

Re: What the Fark???

This came up a while ago around here. Honestly, the man has a point in that CA is politically so different throughout its geography that splitting the state into multiple other states makes sense. The only reason someone wouldn't want that is someone who's looking to something like the electoral college or the nostalgic pride of being considered a jugernaut of a state in some other political function, or individual politicians/bureaucrats who like the idea of wielding so much power over their constituents. The people in the northern mountain areas have very little in common with those who reside in Los Angeles or San Diego. Why not provide to them a more representative republic at the state level?

To his credit, splitting California does make more sense in terms of political balance at the federal level than splitting Texas. If done correctly, you'd end up with 3 red-ish states and 3 dark blue states.

But he's still a loon if he thinks this will actually happen.

Divide CA in 2 and combine the Dakotas. Easy, peasy.

Re: What the Fark???

Why would you combine the Dakotas?

First, to keep the states at 50. I'm OCD.

Second, to offset the rather blatant attempt to add GOP Senators. Just as ND and SD were admitted as a package deal for political compromise, so now they can serve the same purpose by being combined.

Third, because nobody else would care.

The same strategy works with others divisions of CA:

2: ND + SD

3: ND + SD + WY

4: ND + SD + WY + ID

To put things in perspective, ND + SD + WY + ID has the same population as Iowa. Or Corpus Christi. And they have 8 senators.

A suggestion I've heard is to divide ND/SD into East and West Dakota. We from out in the western part of the Dakotas have much more in common with each other than with the East. Of course this wouldn't solve your problem of taking away the Senate 'overrepresentation' of the two Dakotas.

Combine 10 of those states to make one prairie superstate and one mountain superstate. Then split CA and TX into 10 states.

Prairie Superstate University might even beat the SEC champion.
