What The Fark 5: I Can't Believe This Happened!

Re: What The Fark 5: I Can't Believe This Happened!

The definition of sport, as I posted earlier, is an activity involving physical exertion and skill, performed by an individual or team, in a competition or for entertainment.

I assumed you understood enough about golf to realize it falls within that definition. Sorry for granting the benefit of the doubt.

Obviously it involves physical exertion. As I recall, the golf swing involves something like 15-20 individual muscles working in coordination to produce the arc of the golf club to propel the ball forward. This is repeated multiple times over the course of a round.

It goes without saying (or it should) that it requires a degree of skill to perform, and that the more skill you acquire at the sport the higher you will achieve.

Golf is played as both an individual sport (standard golf tournaments) and a team competition (ex: Ryder Cup, President's Cup). It is played for both entertainment and competition.

I think you'd find that most people who say it isn't a sport would question the physical exertion aspect with golf. How much makes it a sport? It's arbitrary. Speed walking requires more than golf, but I'm not calling that a sport either.

Sure, but the problem those people run into is it's not a defensible argument. What about throwing the javelin, a sport that goes back thousands of years? Does it require more physical exertion than golf? There are a host of other things that no one seems to doubt for an instant that are sports, yet they get bent out of shape about golf because their old man played it every Saturday morning.

What about baseball, stand there for 3 hrs, action for a few minutes. At least you walk a mile or 2 in golf.

Now you're just being silly. I don't have to prove anything to you.

You have every right to your opinion. You can be of the opinion that Sidney Crosby is one of the ten worst hockey players in the NHL. No one can "prove you wrong" because it's just your opinion. Instead, the rest of us just roll our eyes, like we're doing with your present opinion.

I’m deducting points for not working in “well, that’s like, your opinion, man. “

Yeah, except you don’t see John Dalys or even guys who fit the 1990s golf build (or lack thereof). You see ridiculously built athletes like tiger woods, brooks koepka, and Rory mcilroy dominating.

So golf wasn't a sport until the late 1990's?

Yeah, I can't imagine anyone actually thinks pro wrestling is a sport. It obviously doesn't pass the competitive portion of the definition. Anything that has a pre-determined outcome is not competitive by definition.

I think people who suggest pro wrestling is a sport (I personally don't know any who do) do so for the same reason made why golf isn't a sport. They get all hung up on the physical exertion part of the activity. That isn't what defines sports, at least not alone. It's just a small part of it.

Re: What The Fark 5: I Can't Believe This Happened!

Pro wrestling is a sport just like ballet is a sport.

Think about it: athletically-skilled* performers moving through a defined series of actions and plot scripting.

Or as a friend says, "Pro wrasslin' is ballet for Bubba."

Golf is a game. I take nothing away from the skill required. Nothing. Even golfers say "you have to beat the course" like they're not even competing against other players? It's silly.

Now, pro wrestling, it's a male-driven soap opera. Period. Entertainment. Does it take skill? Yes! You have to be able to physically do the stuff, and act well. Sport? Please. And it's not even a past-time, etc. It's a part in a play.

Well you're 100% incorrect about golf. Not competing against other players? Have you heard of match play? The Ryder Cup? Silly argument.

I am going by what golfers have said, in a normal competition/tournament. I think we can all agree that the Ryder Cup is different, and match play is a differential compared to normal tournament play.

If you dont have the lowest score you lose whether you beat(under par) the course or not. You cant control other players in an individual sport.
