What the Fark 3: The Strange and Unusual

Re: What the Fark 3: The Strange and Unusual

The internet is a strange place. The current issue of Strategy & Tactics includes a gorgeous map of the 5th century Roman Empire. Their neighbors to the east are the client states Colchis and Iberia, in the Caucuses. Naturally I wondered whether the latter was just a coincidence in naming with the much more famous Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and I set out to wander the internet until I found the answer.

Which I did. It is a coincidence. However, I also found this.

My fellow monkey people are fascinating.

Huh.

My question, how fast can Aroldis Chapman do this? The interwebs seem to be deficient of this information.

The "top speed" of pitches has been measured so many different ways over the years..."Fastball" (a great documentary) actually used science and data, and before Chapman, concluded that Nolan Ryan threw the fastest of all time, at about 108 mph. The big difference over the years was, in general, WHERE you clocked the speed of the pitch on its path to the mound.

Right, which is why I wonder what the apples-to-apples for Ryan, Chapman, etc is.

IIRC, the science gurus in the doc clocked the pitch about 2/3 on the way to the mound. It's been a while since I saw it. I would think that this "short drill," would increase the readings of speed.

The doc also lays waste to the "riser" pitch in baseball. It's impossible. The faster pitches just don't take as long to sink, and the "rise" is an optical illusion.

Listening to KGR (Keith Hernandez, Gary Cohen, and Ron Darling) on Mets broadcasts is hilarious when this comes up. Ron completely refuses to believe it, and Gary always has his tongue up Ron's warning track, so he refuses too. The two of them went to Yale and Columbia, respectively. So much for admissions requirements. :D

Re: What the Fark 3: The Strange and Unusual

I hate Ron Darling. He's always been a top five worst announcer for me.

He's fun as part of GKR if you're a Met fan because of their chemistry and the constant inside jokes. I'm sure an opposing fan would find them incomprehensible and/or too chatty.

I heard him when he was a Nats announcer and he was abysmal, but I thought that might be inexperience.

I haven't heard him much on his national coasts because I tend to watch those with the sound off.

The funny thing about Darling is after listening to him for a decade it is obvious he is a total rockhead. He's not just dumb, he's dumb for a pitcher. I have no idea how dude could have gotten into UConn, let alone Yale. Baseball is not a sports I thought the Ivies let down their hair to admit a cough "need."

White Castle has taken Valentine's Day reservations for years.

Hey, baby, you know you're the one for me. To celebrate our love, Imma gonna give you a lil indigestion.

I like that you captured the first rev of this story before I changed it. It's much better this way; please don't update it. :-)

This is the problem with going back and editing for typos and thinking of better material... :p
