I love these responses, but I also get the mental image of a slightly doddering, very British, somewhat loveable old prof who honestly meant no harm and who is lost in the mists of a bygone day. So, yay on the responses, but also be gentle with the old guy. I'd love to see him pose with a few of these women and demonstrate his gracious support.

Just heard an interview with the white NAACP lady on the radio this morning. I think they cut into a Today Show interview, or Good Morning America, or something like that. Holy ****, this lady is crazy, like, needs to be institutionalized crazy. I got the impression that she thought that she could convert to be being black, like someone would convert to a different religion, and that this was ok. Its like she watched the "Negroplasty" episode of South Park and thought it was a documentary. :eek:

Yet, if she is successful, anyone can declare what race they should be identified with regardless of the race they were born as.

We would then truly become a post racial society, right?

Given that it has been the pretext for so much pain and suffering, let's just retire race. It has no biological component anyway; it's a social convention. Italians and Eastern Europeans used to be a different "race" from other "whites." Mexicans and Cubans wouldn't be caught dead being mistaken for each other's "race."

It's a nasty bit of oppositional identify formation with no redeeming value. Kill it with fire.

I'm sure we can find some other way to vilify the poors. We are imaginative monkeys.

Pure grade-A A holes are kind of fascinating when you don't have to serve them. One of them works in my building and generally causes everyone a lot of unnecessary stress. I've wondered how the perp doesn't seem to realize at all how much easier his life could be without the extreme reactions to everything, and have learned a little about narcissistic personality disorder. Perhaps a lot of these people are similarly afflicted. Basically, childhood abuse = extremely low self esteem = overcompensation with epic A hole-ness. They make the more argumentative among us on USCHO look like harmless lovable little fuzzballs.

I think I'll pick up this book. My only real strategy for dealing with as*holes is to get through the interaction as quickly as possible, but that nearly always means they get everything they want, which is just rewarding and encouraging that behavior. The worst situations are when they're clients or, far worse, co-workers (since with clients there is at least method in being over-solicitous).

My boss' boss' boss is a prime as*hole, and I've been able to observe him in his natural habitat (the boardroom) a few times. It really does deserve more serious study -- it's well beyond simple aggression or bullying, but complex enough that it probably qualifies as its own multi-leveled personality disorder.

The way to deal with *******s is to take their game and throw it right back in their face. Only word of caution is that the true ******* will know your regulations and be a stickler for them, reporting even the smallest infraction to a higher power, if any.

I used to think that being an even bigger a55hole in response was the only way to deal with them. Turns out that while effective on all but the most alpha of a55holes, and still useful in some limited circumstances, it's not a good long-term strategy. Particularly once word gets around the entire office about how you're intimidating and hard to work with.

As I approach 30, I've been trying to take the "calm but firm" approach to workplace bullying. The goal is to make the a55hole look ridiculous and immature, while you remain unfazed or even slightly amused by his/her a55holery.
