What if every team made the tournament?

Fighting Sioux 23

College Hockey Weekly is doing a "What If" Tournament. They have ranked all the teams 1-58 using RPI, sorted out intra-conference matchups, placed the proper teams in the proper regionals, and are going to do a hypothetical tournament this week. Hopefully it will be fun, and help pass the time.

http://www.collegehockeyweekly.com/What-If.html

First Round: Sunday, March 18th (which means they will be updating that bracket throughout the rest of today.
Second Round: Monday, March 19th
Sweet 16: Tuesday, March 20th
Elite 8: Thursday, March 22nd
Frozen Four: Friday, March 23rd
Championship: Saturday, March 24th.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to discuss the hypothetical tournament here...

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

Well, Round 1 is in the books. The biggest upsets? Bowling Green knocks off Colorado College in double overtime to advance at Magness to prevent a CC-DU matchup in the 2nd round. Mercyhurst knocked off Northeastern, and Alaska beat the Q.

For those interested, the scores are taken from a simulator of sorts (I have never seen it, but have heard about it) that uses KRACH values and other intangibles (ex. hot streaks) to compute the scores of each of the games. Games that end in ties remain as a tie, and then they run the teams through again for "overtime". If the numbers end in a tie again, they repeat the process for "double overtime". So, in Bowling Green's defeat of CC, they tied twice in the simulator, and then BG came out on top the third time.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

In the first set of games from the second round this morning...

At Conte Forum:
Boston College - 2
RIT - 0

The Eagles scored in the 2nd period, and then salted the game away with an empty net goal late in the third to advance to the Sweet 16 in Worcester.

At the Tsongas Center:
LSSU - 3
Massachusetts Lowell - 2 (OT)

LSSU charged out to a 2-0 lead through the first period, but Lowell scored at the end of the second to pull within one. Midway through the third, the RiverHawks knotted the game at 2, and regulation ended 2-2. Unfortunately for the home crowd, LSSU scored early in OT to advance to St. Paul for the Sweet 16.

At Cady Arena:
Miami - 5
Mercyhurst - 2

The Lakers couldn't come up with another upset today, as Miami was all over Mercyhurst from the drop of the puck. The RedHawks scored 3 goals in the first, and 2 in the second to mount a 5-0 lead before Mercyhurst scored twice in the final frame to finish the scoring. Miami will now make their way to Bridgeport for the Sweet 16.

At Lynah Rink:
Cornell - 2
Ohio State - 1

The Buckeyes started off strong scoring early in the first period, but the Lynah faithful kept the Big Red going, and midway through the 2nd, Cornell scored to tie it up, and scored again before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead. The goalies held their ground the rest of the way, and Cornell lands a spot in Bridgeport for the Sweet 16.

Games this afternoon:
#24 SCSU @ #9 BU
#29 Bemidji @ #4 North Dakota
#18 Notre Dame @ #15 Michigan St.
#23 Air Force @ #10 Maine

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

Jan Brady hung one already for their one win over Holy Cross.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

BU needs overtime to get past Alabama-Huntsville. That sounds about right. :(

Thanks for the link FS23, that's a cool exercise.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

Every team does make the tournament - just like every citizen makes the government.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

If you let Brown win this thing, they might just hang a banner:p

FWIW, I have zero say in who wins or loses...it is done with a predictor/simulator that takes into account KRACH and other intangibles when computing who wins or loses.

That being said, Brown lost in the First Round to Western Michigan 4-0.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

As opposed to the current form where the regular season eliminates two teams.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

That simulator is flawed. Minnesota beat Sacred Heart 9-0 and 6-0 earlier this year, and you're telling me that Minnesota only wins 7-1 in the rematch? :p

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

Bemidji's imaginary game winning goal was so imaginary off sides. Fie fie, upon the imaginary Beavers!

Bemidji's imaginary game winning goal was so imaginary off sides. Fie fie, upon the imaginary Beavers!

:p:D:D

It was a close call, and the imaginary fans along the blueline were hypothetically quite upset that the whistle was not theoretically blown.

Re: What if every team made the tournament?

Could we get some tangible wounded players to return?

That is something I have asked about, and have not received a response yet. My guess is that current injuries are something that they have as part of the intangibles. If/When I find out, I'll post it here.
