I doubt there is any "originator" short of a long evolutionary chain back to commedia dell'arte to Plautus to Aristophanes to two Sumerian guys doing the routine "Ngirsu Falls!?! Slowly I turn..."

Step by step, inch by inch. No question, you class us up. I'm guessing that will be the first and last Plautus reference around here for a while.

As I may have mentioned on another thread: my grade school used to have a bon fire on Halloween. We'd do our trick or treating then head back to school for a carnival (bobbing for apples, etc) with the bon fire as the climax. As a little kid, the fire seemed about as big as the Graf Zeppelin, but looking back, it WAS pretty good size. 'Course, in those days we used to burn leaves out in the street, too.

OP's post reminded me of another...kids trick or treating on Halloween in neighborhoods. Nowadays they seem to do it on the weekend at a community center or something.

I'm guessing mostly the unhappy residue of those myths of adulterated candy back in the 90's. Between that and political correctness and religious fundamentalists joining forces, we've really done a number on Halloween (for kids) for adults it's a different story altogether. Parents congratulate themselves about how safe they're making things for their kids by strictly controling trick or treating, then send them to school the next day on buses not equipped with seat belts.
I still remember the day we moved when I was in second grade. Trick or treated in both neighborhoods, then went to the fair and bon fire that night in the new neighborhood. This sounds hopelessly old fashioned, but one of our new neighbors gave away homemade popcorn balls AND a quarter to each kid. A quarter! A very good day for a 7 year old.

It's really huge for young adults these days. I read somewhere that in terms of dollars spent, Halloween is second or third on the list. Well, that ain't for tootsie rolls. Lots of folks put up pretty elaborate decorations these days. When I was a kid, it was mostly jack o lanterns, and if you really wanted to splurge, some hay.

She has done (I don't think anymore) spots for years. It was one of the main reasons she was known (besides the obvious two reasons).

I don't doubt that for a second. The sheer amount of booze I consumed and purchase for others to consume was staggering this past year. Maybe one of two or three times I've ever had a hangover.

Yes, Halloween is much more fun now. Seeing the Whiskey Girls in their slutty costumes was an excellent time. Not to mention Lee Brice put on a **** good concert that night also.
