Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan
What!!!! No cross country trip as a top seed to play Michigan in Michigan? No trip to play in some East Coast venue packed to the rafters with 800 people? Am I dreaming?
IIRC, the first two trips (GR & A2) were under the old 12 team format, 1 west regional and 1 east regional. Both times SCSU was the higher seed (#2 in 01, #4 in 02) and got placed at the closest west site, with a bye in 00-01. Yeah, playing a team on its own ice (01-02) isn't "neutral". We know, playing UND in 05-06. Ask Denver in 01-02, Maine and CC in 02-03, too.
Still, if they were the better team, as was clearly the case in 00-01, they should have won regardless.
So, you got sent out east the last three times after that under the four regional setup, and was the favored higher seed twice and lost all three. So, yes, getting placed close to home will do wonders for having your fans there, but you still have to win. I guess that is better than being placed in Ft. Wayne with about 5000 Michigan fans. Then again, CC won in 04-05 in GR under the same circumstances.
I think your team earned the spot in the west regional this year. Looked good in the WCHA playoffs in the parts of the games I watched.
The Huskies just down the road at the "X". They must of watched the geeks in the stripes actually put the wrong guy and best penalty killer in the box on one play and then give a 5x3 to the Souix with our guy standing next to the goalie as Kristo barrels in at warp 5 long after the whistle and gets knocked down. I tip my hat to No Dak, but as the case has been for much of the season, the play was not matched by the officiating.
I saw the play with Kristo, and frankly, if your defenseman just stands his ground and absorbs the hit, he draws a penalty. Instead he clocks him high in the facemask knocking him down and deserved the penalty. Carbon copy of some of the stupidity Michigan was guilty of this season. That was the turning point in the game, IMO. UND is playing really good, though, so who knows what would have happened.
