West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Isn't that what we thought last year? :(

Regardless of our track record, I'd rather be playing Northern over Michigan, who's the 2nd hottest team in the country (the hottest is the one we lost to last night).

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Thats a good question, I just bought tickets row 3 in section 103. I'd be up for tailgating if someone puts something together.

Anyone got a better suggestion than the usual F5 hangout?

No, last year we thought we had a crappy draw, because we didn't make the tournament last year.

The good news for Wisconsin, should they meet St. Cloud, is that game is on Saturday. SCSU is 3-0 vs. Wisconsin on Fridays, and UW is 2-0 vs. SCSU on Saturdays, right?

Or SCSU's 1-0 at the X. Spin the numbers anyway you want, both WCHA teams gotta get by some good competition first to settle any scores.

You're gonna be hardpressed to find a better lot. The old GPL lot (by McGovern's/the magic shop/etc) is owned by McG's and doesn't allow tailgating, and the GPL lot is the closest/most friendly tailgate lot that we've found.

Now, if it's 5 guys by their car, that's different. Any kind of actual "group" and the unwritten rules may change.

All 3 games should be good to watch, I'm predicting Wisconsin over Northern Michigan to move on to the frozen four. I plan on making the trek from Madison on Friday morning but haven't been to St Paul since I was probably 14. Any good places to drink and good local places to eat?

If you want good food, I'd say McGoverns, the Liffey, or Great Waters Brewing Company. If you want some atmosphere (like, rowdy loud stuff) I'd say Tom Reid's, and maybe McGovern's.

All are within 4-5 blocks of the X, IIRC.

Never had been to The Liffey before Friday. I don't know how much crack they put in their fried cheese curds, but it was enough to make me crave them for the next two days.

Maybe because of my profession, but loud and rowdy to me screams Alary's. A bit far, but there is a shuttle.

We got a kick watching people pack into the little Alary's bus this weekend. Packed to the gills, hard starts and stops. Good thing nobody on the bus had been drinking.

Cat Chat's NCAA Preview

FYI there is recap of NMU's games at the Joe and the CCHA title game presser before the preview.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

What!!!! No cross country trip as a top seed to play Michigan in Michigan? No trip to play in some East Coast venue packed to the rafters with 800 people? Am I dreaming?

IIRC, the first two trips (GR & A2) were under the old 12 team format, 1 west regional and 1 east regional. Both times SCSU was the higher seed (#2 in 01, #4 in 02) and got placed at the closest west site, with a bye in 00-01. Yeah, playing a team on its own ice (01-02) isn't "neutral". We know, playing UND in 05-06. Ask Denver in 01-02, Maine and CC in 02-03, too.
Still, if they were the better team, as was clearly the case in 00-01, they should have won regardless.

So, you got sent out east the last three times after that under the four regional setup, and was the favored higher seed twice and lost all three. So, yes, getting placed close to home will do wonders for having your fans there, but you still have to win. I guess that is better than being placed in Ft. Wayne with about 5000 Michigan fans. Then again, CC won in 04-05 in GR under the same circumstances. ;)

I think your team earned the spot in the west regional this year. Looked good in the WCHA playoffs in the parts of the games I watched.

The Huskies just down the road at the "X". They must of watched the geeks in the stripes actually put the wrong guy and best penalty killer in the box on one play and then give a 5x3 to the Souix with our guy standing next to the goalie as Kristo barrels in at warp 5 long after the whistle and gets knocked down. I tip my hat to No Dak, but as the case has been for much of the season, the play was not matched by the officiating.

I saw the play with Kristo, and frankly, if your defenseman just stands his ground and absorbs the hit, he draws a penalty. Instead he clocks him high in the facemask knocking him down and deserved the penalty. Carbon copy of some of the stupidity Michigan was guilty of this season. That was the turning point in the game, IMO. UND is playing really good, though, so who knows what would have happened.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I know each athletic department gets allotted tickets in certain sections for each regional and for the FF. Does anyone know which sections each school will get for this one? It'd be good to know which section I want to sit by if I (somehow) find my way to the Twin Cities this weekend.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Wow all this thread has been is talk about hotel and food. How about some hockey.

What are the situations with injuries an/or suspensions?

Vermont has two injured players. Wahs Stacey who has been 1-2 line forward has been out for several weeks with a lower body injury. Unsure of his status for the weekend but likely out, or at the least out of shape. Back-up goalie Mike Spillane is also out for the remainder of the season I believe. With the dismissal of another top line forward UVM is rather thin in the forwards dept. But otherwise healthy.

Wisconsin is healthy and Cody Golobef's suspension was for one game, so we have a full squad for Friday night. We're as deep as they come, all four lines can put points up on the board.

For SCSU Barta (D) is still out I think (lower body injury). Not a huge loss there though as he and Gaudet are pretty much interchangable.

Everyone is hoping Roe will back for Friday but I haven't heard/read anything concrete on his status. If he can't go that will be a big loss for SCSU.
