We're Too Good for the Basement - Michigan Tech at Colorado College, Oct. 23-24, 2009

One thing I have noticed is that Tech pushes really hard on offense for the first few minutes. I noticed it during the exhibition, during the Showcase Showdown, and again here tonight. Jamie must want that first goal. We get good pressure whenever he does it.

It's nice when it works. Unfortunately, they only manage to score within the first five minutes of the game about once, maybe twice a semester.

And yes, I had the B2 feed and I can confirm that Eli V. played 4th line center. During the pregame, Russell explained that Dobson and Eli V. are both capable of playing two-way hockey. I think due to the large number of defensemen on the roster this year, they simply have the luxury of sitting underperforming players. I don't believe that JR was very happy with Peter Rohn's effort in the LSSU game, so Eli got to move up.

Twitch made the video board display (which is the b2 feed), got a screen shot but it's on someone's locked computer; picture to come soon.

Yeah, it was a bit annoying when the feed would be showing the crowd for several seconds after the play had started up again. I did spot Twitch though.

I'm still debating whether I should spend another $7 to watch us get swept or just listen to Dirk for free.

Lenny and I actually watched the feed and had Dirk on radio. The audio they had sounded terrible like we were in a bathroom. Plus we wanted some tech-sidedness. The only problem is that Dirk was about 20-25 seconds faster than the video feed...

I did the same thing. Occasionally, Dirk was only a second or two ahead of the video, but I'd say he was mostly 10-15 seconds ahead.

Anyone heard who will be in net tonight? I hope Robo is, he is pretty solid. The goals were not his fault.

Re: We're Too Good for the Basement - Michigan Tech at Colorado College, Oct. 23-24,

I didn't stay up to hear it myself, but the Gag-zet quoted the following:

"You're not going to win too many hockey games when you give up three power-play goals," Tech coach Jamie Russell said in his postgame interview with WKMJ-FM. "An older player on our team that was cheating to offense on the penalty kill opened up Billy Sweatt for a one-timer.

"We had an assistant captain who took a retarded penalty that put us two men short. They score five-on-three. Then we had a freshman made a mistake, gave up a pretty Grade-A shot on a defenseman that walked from the boards all the way to the middle of the rink below the top of the circle and let a shot go."

I think you will see a better team tonight. I noticed even though I didn't get to listen to the game that Tech took a lot more penalties than CC. Also I wonder how many faceoffs we won. Mistakes are going to happen but the other team makes them too, we need to capitalize!

That sounds like every penalty kill we have. If you want to see the difference between a good team and us, just watch the PKs. We have a very passive, tight little box that doesn't move much, doesn't pressure the opposing team at all, and pretty much lets the other team walk around us at will until they come in close enough to try to stop them, while pretty much every other team out there is active, and stays as open as possible applying as much pressure as they can until they need to collapse. Granted, that's probably because our PP sucks enough to let them do that, but still

Totally agree. I like BC's pp/ pk. very active on both sides.

Univ of Mich does this very effectively as well. usually lasts about 5 minutes. often ends in a goal.

I guess if we were going to lose, we might as well make it a firehouse for a change. Our penalty kill needs work all next week.

Fun game tonight Tigers. See ya next season (most likely).

Oh and, Tech didn't lose 5-0 at home like another UP school did tonight. ;) :p

Russell's Post-Game:

-3rd period is the sign of a young hockey team
-Didn't stay out of the box/control our emotions
-Lost our composure after CC tied it up at 4

-None of the penalties Tech took in the third were necessary
-Older players did not lead by example

-"PK is struggling" :p
-Not supporting Robo
-Josh wanted at least three goals he allowed back

-Need to learn from this
-Did some good things, but need to tighten up

Dirk's 3 Stars:

3rd: Tyler Johnson (CC, 2g-1a)
2nd: Malcolm Gwilliam (MTU, 2g-1a)
1st: Gabe Guentzel (CC, 1g-3a)

For me and MN, the first part is truth. The second part....never. :o I guess I'm a sadomasochist.

Wow, who would have expected CC to be leading the WCHA after four games. I guess that is why we drop the puck.

Hope Twitch Boy has a safe trip back to Cheyenne. Thank you for your visit.

Go Tigers!!
