We're going Rio..... de Janerio

Re: We're going Rio..... de Janerio

Minneapolis is the leading choice in the US for the 2020 Summer Games. It finished runner up to Helsinki in 1952 and was the 2nd US choice in 1996. However, I am willing to wager Johannesburg will get 2020.

God, I hope so!

Depends on how they do with the FIFA cup. South Africa is a wonderful country, but Joburg is, in a word, terrifying. Even Peace Corps volunteers serving in South Africa aren't allowed to go there except to go to the airport. Cape Town would be a better venue since it's absolutely stunning, the people are nicer, and it's a lot safer, but it just doesn't have the scale.

Hopefully the Prawns won't cause too many problems.

Who is more money hungry at the expense of common sense, the NCAA or the IOC?

Easily the NCAA.

I don't think anyone can argue that the IOC will make more money in Rio than Chicago. If the IOC were solely money hungry, the Olympics would never leave the US, Western Europe, Japan and Australia. I think the IOC is just sentimentality hungry. These smaller, third world countries support each other blindly to prove they are the equals of the big, bad Americans.

FYP.

The real money is US TV's, which means either North America or very western Europe for the high ratings.
