Welcome folks, to the Biden administration!

Every story I saw run on the NFZ stressed that it would mean shooting down Russian aircraft.

I agree the media blows chunks, and I certainly agree our fellow citizens are door stops, but I think coverage did get that one essential detail right.

If it didn't, then what's the point of a no fly zone if you're just gonna let them fly through it.

"Oh, we'll just tell them they can't fly here, and they won't." The Drew Method.

Just like we told them not to attack Ukraine.

I don't have cable so my "tv news" intake comes in 5-6 minute youtube clips, but I swear every one I watch, be it CNN, ABC, MSNBC, has some well-meaning guy arguing that we aren't doing enough and we need the NFZ.

Granted, I didn't watch any of the network boobs or Fox.

Part of the issue is that you have every news service amplifying the incorrect stance that a limited no-fly zone would not be an escalation. Except for:
  • There is no such thing as a "limited" no fly zone.
  • It would need to be enforced, which means shooting at (and being shot at in turn) Russian planes.
People are dumb. Even smart people are dumb.

this week on NPR they had a retired diplomat and retired USAF pilot. The retired diplomat went on and on about how "limited no fly zones" aren't escalatory and that Russia would likely abide by them so long as they were "limited" (without going into detail of what that actually means). The retired pilot was incredibly polite and defferential but pointed out - repeatedly - the fact that Russia wouldn't just "comply" with any such thing and we'd be in a shooting war whether or not we liked it.

Was it Michael mcfaul? What a disappointment that guy has been during this crisis.

I missed the name, but he has spent many years in Europe, if that helps? He sounded generally knowledgeable and kept talking about how we had this mythical "limited NFZ" in Bosnia and how successful it was. The USAF guy politely reminded him that it was so successful because the former Yugoslavian air force was operating 1960's era MIG 21s and locally designed J-22s and J-21s, and they still managed to shoot down asmall number of ours. The Russian Air Force may be a bit of a paper tiger compared to the business end of a truly modern NATO, but it's still infinitely more dangerous than the Croatians and Serbians.

Actually, here is the actual piece I listened to.

I didn't catch all of it but I caught about the first half.

"Think of how stupid the average person is. Then think about how half of the population is dumber than them." -- George Carlin

All of which was okay when the stupid people were divided evenly between parties, as they were for most of our history. But beginning in the 70s the parties began to realign, in their white support, on intelligence. We've arrived now at a situation where the Dems are POC and smart white people, while the GOP is dumb white people and a smattering of sociopaths exploiting them. That means the GOP candidate is always a threat to win, no matter what the merits.

It's OK there are so many stupid people. There always will be. It's not OK that they've formed a bloc.

Sad to see her go because I think she does an excellent job, but I really don't like the cycle of rotating staff between <insert administration> and <insert partisan media>. Just because I happen to like this administration and this staffer doesn't change that.

But it's not new, or even remotely recent. It just stinks.

And yet people disapprove of how Biden is handling the economy because all they hear about is gas prices...

"People" don't matter.

"People" are going to vote their tribe and think up reasons after.

As long as we can stop the fascists from burning ballots, we will win and keep winning. It's just a matter now of maintaining the integrity of our elections. The Right know this, that is why the have rejected democracy.

This is why we fail.

No people look at their wallet after they have been shopping for anything. Dems haven't figured out that people vote their wallet.
