Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Since so much change is already going to occur, would anyone else maybe like to see the MacNaughton Cup become the conference playoff hardware, instead of just handing it to the #1 seed? I've thought about this for awhile in the current WCHA. The MacNaughton has so much history, I think it's better suited to be the tournament trophy.

I'm not so keen on giving hardware to a regular season 'champion' anyway. For instance, I think the NHL President's Trophy means nothing and usually ends up being the butt of jokes (just ask the Sharks and the Canucks). We've already seen some of the same in the WCHA with all the "MacNaughton Curse" theories over the years.

Absolutely!!!

A great idea.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

For absolutely no good reason, Dallas Drake was my favorite player when I was a kid, Northern Michigan was a WCHA school, and they came to Colorado Springs every year. Speaking of which... cleaning out my closets, I have an old WCHA yearbook from the year Northern Michigan won it all (Or the year after? The trophy picture is on the back, so it must be that.), if anybody wants it... I don't suppose I need to keep all my WCHA junk I've hoarded, what with CC leaving to the "super league" and all...

Yes, please!

I feel like I should be more excited about this. Yeah, it's awesome, but IMO we should have started our first year in the WCHA THIS year and not hung in the CCHA.

There's no way to do that. Schedules are made and notice has to be given. Plus the WCHA has 12 teams for this season and next.

Brent... I can't rep you so I'll say it straight out... I prefer that USCHO is NSFW-free. Thankfully its the weekend.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

What about the Kohl Center in Madison?

Why would the WCHA want to hold their tourney in a department store? Wait, what's that? You say there is a college D-I hockey team that plays at that rink. The Wisconsin who? Badgers? Huh, weird I seem to have a few fuzzy memories regarding hockey in Madison, but I guess if I don't remember they can't be that important. Are you sure they still have a team? Ah, yes it is coming back to me now. They play in that league that only has hockey games Sunday through Thursday so that they can get TV coverage that doesn't confict with more important things like football, men's bouncyball, women's bouncy ball, track and field, wrestling, fencing, the math team regional finals, the third-string long-snapper's weekly talk show, etc. I do remember now... that I could care less.

But seriously, if you were to rank every possible hockey rink in North America, I'm pretty sure the rinks in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Forks, Omaha and Madison are the bottom five on that list. If Bruce and the rest of the WCHA offices have one brain cell left between them, there is no way they are hosting a WCHA championship in Madison and giving even $1 to use that facility. They'll take it to the outdoor pee-wee rink in Eveleth, MN before it goes to the Kohl Center. Six months ago, that might have been a valid suggestion, but not now.

Oh and since this is the NMU thread, I hate the Wildcats, but I am glad you are back in the WCHA. Now MTU and NMU will rule the WCHA and all of college hockey as father and son (well more like pimp godfather and redhead step child, but it's the thought that counts.) Now go talk to your friends as LSSU and tell them how much you will miss them and invite them to the party too. Nobody wants to be left without a conference when the music stops.

No. What makes the MacNaughton so coveted is how hard it is to win. If you make it so you only have to win 4 games to get it, you are cheapening winning the MacNaughton.

I would have to agree. I think the big prize for the tourney champion is the auto-bid to the NCAA. However along the same lines, I never understood why the tourney champion goes to the NCAA tourney for the same reason. As much as it gave Tech eternal hope the last four seasons, it means you can piddle away a 30+ game regular season, get hot for two weeks and you're in the tourney. It is not likely, but I think consistancy should be rewarded, not a team who is a flash in the pan.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

You know what else would be good for the WCHA? The 10 teams left after the Big 10.
I happen to agree with you. But a WCHA composed of the current teams minus Minnesota and Wisconsin is no longer a possibility. Given the reality of what will be in 2 years, picking up NMU is a good move for the WCHA.

I agree. Also, in the WCHA the League Champion is the regular season champion, and the playoff champion is merely the playoff champion. You can't compare it to pro sports, because there is no equivalent to the conference playoffs in pro sports.

It was a joke. A sarcastic statement.

Wait, we're going to miss LSSU? I'm happy to not have to face them at least 4 times a year anymore, even if it means incurring the liver damage that will be additional series with Tech.

As for the Kohl Center, it wouldn't be an option anyway. Doesn't the B1G have an agreement in the works where the conference tournament is played at the regular season champion's arena? That, and why the blue hell would the WCHA put the Final 5 at a non-member team's barn? Odds are, this party will be moving from the Xcel to either the Resch or another Twin Cities venue.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Tech won't rule anything, there is a reason why NMU dosn't want to play you. It drags our pairwise down win or loose

Oh my. I know of someone who might want it, but then he may start calling you at all hours of the night asking for all manner of obscure trivia and memorabilia.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

You know I'm very glad NMU is back in the WCHA. I think it's a good fit.
I wonder though what will happen down the road. I think the rest of college hockey has a responsibility to try to keep the remaining CCHA program alive and I'd take any of the remaining ones into the WCHA over Moorhead, location or not.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Overall, I think this will be a positive change for NMU. From an attendance standpoint, Notre Dame, Miami and Ohio State haven't been any better draws in Marquette than have Ferris or Bowling Green. Michigan State was a near sellout in the early Comley years there, but that has fallen off in recent years and without Rick behind the Spartan bench, was likely to decline even more. That leaves Michigan as the only real attendance driver of the schools leaving the CCHA. Adding another home game against Tech will help negate some of that drop, especially since it will once again be a heated conference rivalry with games played on prime weekends instead of being relegated to semester break or having the games split and played one each, weeks apart. The team has been re-establishing a rivalry with St Cloud, having played them in the 04-05 and 05-06 seasons as well at the NCAA 2OT thriller in St Paul in the 2010 tourney. Those teams will meet again this fall in Marquette and next year in St Cloud. Bemidjii has also shown up on the schedule as well as of late. It's a school and a town with a lot of similarities to NMU and Marquette and I recommend the fans make a visit when we play there. I think this could be a very solid rivalry, much like NMU-Omaha has been. Now bring in Dave Shyiak and the Seawolves and I think you have a pretty good group of rivals.

Another benefit is that NMU will be in a conference when everyone is pretty much on equal footing when it comes to budget, travel, prestige and recruiting. We can now compare apples to apples. we compete on equal footing with the entire league in just about every aspect of the game and the business.
i give a great deal of credit to Les Wong, Steve Reed, Ken Godfrey and Walt Kyle for the move. They have done a tremendous amount of work under the radar to make this happen. Though some fans wondered if we were doing anything as the college hockey landscape shifted, NMU was very wise to keep there cards close to the vest and only bring it out in the media when decisions were made.

In my opinion, NMU is one of the few smaller schools that may actually benefit from the shift. And though I will miss the trips and seeing friends downstate, it will be nice to visit new places and forge new relationships as well!

I'd say ditto for MTU and for the pretty much the same reasons you state. At this point I don't see any negatives for MTU and look forward to the future WCHA.
