While the i's are not dotted nor the t's crossed, I still think it's appropriate to welcome NMU back into the WCHA.

That Mining Journal contains an almost ludicrous editing choice in reporting this ... it says
The release from the WCHA says the league hopes to make NMU's membership official next week.

The release most certainly DOES NOT say that. It says ...
Formal approval of Northern Michigan's application for membership in the WCHA will occur next week.

There is nothing "hope"ful about that. It's definitive.

Looking forward to a new era of Cat hockey. Renewing the league rivalry with MTU and building new rivalries will be exciting.



Any early speculation on where a WCHA playoff final four might be played in the future? St. Paul doesn't seem to be a realistic option after the 12-13 season. Maybe Green Bay or Milwaukee?

Flashy and I have been talking about the Resch Center in GB - newer building and a realistic size for the new WCHA.

Do you think the WCHA might lean away from hosting the tournament in a state without any conference teams, though? The location might be central, but I think they'd tend to favor someplace in the UP or (more likely) Minnesota, though I don't know where.

So that's 2 out of 3 UP schools. Think they try for Lake State? Though by my reckoning it is an 11 hour bus ride from Moorhead to the Soo. Not a far plane flight, but a long bus ride.

Resch Center would be the best location until they outgrow it. On the flip side, what are the X and the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce going to do about losing the Final 5?

If I was a betting man I would say it will be at the league champions arena.

St. Norbert then can go D1, less then 10 miles from GB. I know it won't happen, just a thought.

For absolutely no good reason, Dallas Drake was my favorite player when I was a kid, Northern Michigan was a WCHA school, and they came to Colorado Springs every year. Speaking of which... cleaning out my closets, I have an old WCHA yearbook from the year Northern Michigan won it all (Or the year after? The trophy picture is on the back, so it must be that.), if anybody wants it... I don't suppose I need to keep all my WCHA junk I've hoarded, what with CC leaving to the "super league" and all...

Since so much change is already going to occur, would anyone else maybe like to see the MacNaughton Cup become the conference playoff hardware, instead of just handing it to the #1 seed? I've thought about this for awhile in the current WCHA. The MacNaughton has so much history, I think it's better suited to be the tournament trophy.

I'm not so keen on giving hardware to a regular season 'champion' anyway. For instance, I think the NHL President's Trophy means nothing and usually ends up being the butt of jokes (just ask the Sharks and the Canucks). We've already seen some of the same in the WCHA with all the "MacNaughton Curse" theories over the years.

This should be a good move for both NMU and the WCHA.

I also found this part of the article interesting:
Alaska is also rumored to be moving from the CCHA to the WCHA and on Friday, Minnesota State-Moorhead held a press conference to update the public on its pursuit of starting a NCAA Division I hockey program.

MSUM hopes to have a program in the next three years and take advantage of the current shuffling of teams among the conferences in college hockey. MSUM expressed interest in the WCHA during the press conference.

The smaller sizes of the leagues may open up some expansion opportunities.
