We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Clay Wilson puts the biscut in the basket for the Panthers tonight for his first lamp lighter of the season in the NHL (on a really weak shot mind you, but we need good news so we'll take it.

Clay Wilson continues to promote Michigan Tech for Ian. Another goal in his last game and is now riding a two-game goal scoring streak. Or if you want more impressive sounding stats, Clay has scored goals in 40% of his games in the NHL this season. He also currently ranks 11th in the NHL in shooting percentage at 25%!

Go Tech!

Re: MTU Jersey Talk

pathetic

Jamie's postgame thoughts:
One area we talked about, win battles in front of our net, we were not very good at
We had some good chances in 1st period, Dell had some good saves
We didn't take care of the area in front of our net, they capitalized
Both teams went hard to the net, they just won the battles, that was the difference
Frattin was amazing tonight, fast, strong, great shot
Gregoire amazing as well
They got a few good bounces, but our coverage could've been better in front of the net
We had a few good PP chances, a couple good savesby Dell
We had some guys that were banged up that couldn't shoot the puck
We are going to talk about taking care in front of the net now, tonight, tomorrow, and then again right before the game

I watched the game on TV and they were beat in every aspect of the game not just
coverage in front of the net.
A local Tech Alumnus walked right up to Suzanne at the Girls BB game last night and asked her "What are you going to do about Coach Russell". Her response was he is one of the lowest paid coaches in the League and we can't afford to do anything different right now. If that is true ( which I don't believe ) they should shut down the program immediately. I feel a better guess is Coach Russell & Asst Mikesch will be offered a buy out for next year. The National Search starts next week for a New Coaching Staff !:)
This is just a hunch.

what don't you believe? that he is one of the lowest paid? that they can't afford to do something different? or that she responded to the question?

Re: MTU Jersey Talk

Suzanne's a pretty honest person. If they don't have the money, they don't have the money. At this point, we just have to hope that some benefactor steps up and offers to donate enough to buy the staff out. It's a longshot, but I think that's the only way it's happening this year.

Wow.

If that is true, then one of two things is must be true as well. Either she's been told that she won't be part of the solution going forward and gave the alum a 'blow-off' answer or she is numb to the losing and isn't engaging. The answer I want to hear is "We can't afford NOT to do anything different right now."

Boys, she's in over her head on the problems with hockey. No question about it. Despite all the wishful thinking and optimism about next year's team, problems left ignored today will be with us next year too. With all the intelligent people running around Houghton, you'd think they would figure that out.

What is so difficult to understand here? We are not U of M(i or n), we are not UW, we are not DU. We're a public D2 school, with a D2 budget, playing up in one sport. If the money isn't there, then the money isn't there unless someone donates it.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I fail to see the problem with not having the money. Just do it anyways and spend money you don't have. Put it on a credit card or something. That's the American way!

Thanks for the input, Barack.

Okay, if the administration isn't going to tolerate the embarrassment that hockey has become, why isn't there an urgent call for the resources (donations, gifts, bequests, etc) that enables us to be competitive? When the football program was shown death's door, a football alum from my era called me. This is a fellow I knew of back then but never befriended. Had never talked him. He asked me to help save MTU football. I give him a ton of credit for making a 'cold call' for something he believed in. So I wrote the biggest check to the school I've ever written and designated it for football. Thankfully the opportunity for MTU students to play college football was saved by the many alums who supported the program.

I see nothing of the kind going on with hockey. All I see is people complaining (myself included) about hockey circling the drain. Let's say I (and y'all) have a change of heart and decide to dig deep to help the program out of the septic tank. What's the money going to be used for? What is the plan? There is no plan unless you know something I don't. And this alum isn't going to invest when there is no plan.

Maybe the money to run a competitive D1 program at a D2 school won't come unless a football style death sentence is announced. Perhaps alums have to be scared out of their money like what happened to football. In the meantime, doing nothing will absolutely ensure that nothing gets done.

PS I've been involved in philanthropy. The best advice I ever heard was, "Raising money is like milking a cow. You just can't stand there and ask the cow to give milk. You need to pull up a stool, sit down, and start working on the cow."

That's why I've been saying - if I were in Suzanne's shoes, I'd have already been on the phone with possible donors, asking for the money to buy out Russell. I'd explain why a lame duck coach is a bad idea for the program, etc.

You should be the AD because you have a plan. Unfortunately you probably couldn't take the pay cut! :-)

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I don't think she is in over her head or oblivious, but if she has decided to wait until the season is over, giving anything but a BS response would tip her hand. There is no question that money is an issue but having said that, if she needs to find the money I think she can.
Personally I think she is going to review everything after the season and not before.

edit, I agree Ian does not do a good job.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Well, Calumet certainly got schooled today. But congrats to them anyway on a fine season. (hope nobody decides to cut the program because the got embarrassed down state)

I can see why people like Johnson and Errkila. But at the same time Johnson has a ways to go before he carries Tech (if he commits) to glory single-handedly..

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

They mentioned on the FSD+ feed before it went down that Johnson has a Div 1 scholarship from Red Berenson.

This will be sad to see a player that could really help Tech come downstate, but who can blame him. If my son was in the same position, I would be hard pressed to send him to Tech if he had greener opportunities.

The administration needs to stop the bleeding.
3 years of abysmal for the supposed shining star of the athletic program.
Unfortunately for Jamie, he cannot come back now. I would expect him to accept a buyout negotiation and move on with life elsewhere in hockey somewhere.
The hard part is where do you go after this???

Agreed. I am somewhat upset though at the state because if you notice all three divisions had catholic schools in the finals. They just have an advantage in that they can recruit from a wider area. Calumet did real well for a small town school and the CC goalie was quite good.
