WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

The WCHA transfer rule...sitting a season per in conference transfers. How about defining it's purpose, objective, necessity and or true impact, estimations of success per it's purpose. Does it provide something positive vs. a conference that does not enforce a similar rule?

Out of curiosity.
I'd like to hear Brad Frost's response to these questions. I assume that the majority of WCHA coaches (or their school AD's?) were in favor of it when it went into effect, but I wonder if it's come up for discussion since then? It does seem a little odd that only one conference out of four enforces such a rule for women's hockey.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Sounds like Kemp is merely asking for auto-bids for the 3rd and 4th place finishers in the WCHA. (And wants them all to play in the familiar confines of Ridder!)

Summary:

We want teams other than Minnesota to get into the NCAA tourney so we will host the conference championship in Minneapolis for several years.

The other teams get to consult a stats guy who will tell them not to schedule a zillion games with Lindenwood.

that's what may have bit UND a year ago, so then they drop them from the schedule and lose once to Vermont & Syracuse :o

Glad to see he's talking about improving schedules for '17 and '18. With Minnesota only playing 2 out of conference teams this coming year instead of the usual 3, and 6 WCHA teams playing Lindenwood, that is a very disappointing schedule.

WCHA is not the only women's conference that has this rule. Hockey East has the same rule on the women's side.

One obvious reason would seem to be: "We're above poaching stars (or filling slots) for a likely championship run next season. We're amateurs, after all, not rent-a-player professional crowd pleasers, and this proves it."

The counter argument: "Forget this bastardized locution 'student athlete.' These are undergraduates, collegians. They aren't asked to sit out bio-chem or statistics for a year, so why shouldn't they be allowed to play their sport, equally a part of their education?"

An ethicist would salute the integrity of the delay, given the competitive realpolitik of collegiate sports. A nostalgic humanist would lament its need.

A conundrum worthy of our times --- and the judgment of Solomon.

No, which surprised me
So if a female hockey player can transfer from one Hockey East school to another without losing a year of eligibility, then Hockey East does NOT have the same rule as the WCHA.

I used to be confused about this. I think I have it right now...that they don't actually lose a year of eligibility. For instance...I think Nicole Schammel will still be a sophomore when she plays in 2016-2017. Correct me if I'm mistaken. Could be I remain confused.

Brooky is correct; D2D is wrong. E.g., Stephanie Anderson still has a year left at BSU even though her original class graduated at Minnesota.

Yes, I misstated how it works. I should have said that a player who transfers within the WCHA must sit out a year, not that they lose a year of eligibility. :o

Re: WCHA Thread V

My understanding: The reason the mandatory redshirt year for transfers hasn't been implemented across the board (in- and out-of-conference) is that women's hockey is still considered to be a "developing sport."

That said, I don't know what the requirements are to drop that moniker.

That is how I knew a player doesn't lose a year of eligibility. I thought Anderson was done this year but found out while in Bemidji she has a year left.

So with all the coaching changes in the WCHA what does everyone think about the potential standings at the end of the 2015-16 season? Here's my guess:

1) MN
2) WI
3) ND
4) OH
5) Bemidji
6) Duluth
7) SCSU
8) Mankato
