WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

2014-15 WCHA Head Coaches' Preseason Poll
Rank Team (1st place votes) Points
1 Minnesota (6) 48
2 Wisconsin (2) 44
3 Minnesota Duluth 34
4 North Dakota 33
5 Ohio State 26
6 Minnesota State 17
7 Bemidji State 13
8 St. Cloud State 9
(note: coaches could not vote for their own teams in the poll and points were awarded on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system)
Last year this time...if anyone wants to handicap the WCHA.

Expect Bemidji will be ranked higher. I am curious to see the coaches estimation for Minnesota Duluth.

3 North Dakota
4 Minnesota Duluth
5 Bemidji State
6 Ohio State
7 St. Cloud State
8 Minnesota State

The coaches only hit on Nos. 1 and 2, but other than over-rating Minnesota State and underrating Bemidji State they were just one off on the rest.

probably explains why Scanlon won coach of the year, I used to put more into the coaches poll, after all, they should know the teams better than everyone, I wonder which coach under rated the Beavers the most? Johnson (one loss) Frost (2 losses and a tie) Miller (bounced out of the WCHA tounament)

or maybe they weren't the ones to rate them low

it seems they, more than anyone, use past results to predict the future
they= all coaches, not just WCHA

Re: WCHA Thread V

OSU is the team I'm least familiar with. I see where 96IllinoisDad has them finishing in the same spot (6th) as last season. Will their incoming class be able to offset their losses due to graduation? I would guess that'll be difficult given that four of their top six scorers (Kuehl, the Schmidt sisters and Gagne) were seniors last year.

Also, one would think that MSU, with its very young roster now a year older and with what appears to be a solid recruiting class coming in, should be in a position to move up a place or two. Or if not, they should at least be a lot more competitive than last season...which shouldn't be too difficult.

Putting MSU on a last-place finish and predicting Harrington to take Coach of the Year at the same time?

MSU will be more competitive this year. If goaltending is solid (Lost starter) they should upset some people. I dont see any other coach having as big of an impact unless someone knocks off UM. MSU realistically could finish 7th and potentially higher, but right now they deserve to be ranked 8th.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Predictions:
1. UM
2. UW
3. UND
4. BSU
5. UMD
6. OSU
7. SCSU
8. MSU
POY: Brandt
ROY: Potomak
COY: Harrington

MSU will have to wait a year while all those young players continue to develop,

I'll agree with all of that except the last one, the coaches most likely to get COY are:
Maggie Crandall at UMD if they manage to finish 4th and perhaps knock off Harvard (a real possibility) or BC (much less so) or beat MN/WI (possible)
Scanlon if the Beavers make the NCAA (won't know for sure until after voting, but being rated in the top 8 would do it)
Eric Rud if they finish 6th or higher (strong in goal with experienced blue liners and it appears added a number of freshmen)
Idalski if UND finishes 2nd
Frost if none of the above happens (plenty of coaches have managed to screw up a team that should have won, so give the guy some credit)

OSU being passed by SCSU and UMD above BSU is the most likely movement of the above
and UND giving WI a run for 2nd place

I say OSU will be in for a tough year, they graduated 105 points (5 players) of 208. That's a lot of points to replace with Freshmen. UMD is also in a similar boat, they lost 128 pts (7 players) out of 256. I don't think they will drop far enough to get passed by Kato or St. Cloud.

My prediction:
1. UM
2. UW
3. BSU
4. UND
5. OSU
6. UMD
7. MSU
8. SCSU

Frosty voted for Nurse, interesting. I have a feeling that Pankowski will challenge Brandt and not Nurse.

I think you can vote for your own players, just not your own team in the poll. There have been years where somebody was a unanimous selection for Preseason POTY or ROTY.

Not sure who voted for Nurse but I think you're right that Pankowski would be the more likely choice.

Might be the same person who voted for Mikaela Gardner for ROTY.
