WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

Would be interesting to see how many votes Idalski got for COTY. What he did with this team should be positively noted. Given not only the way the team had performed down the stretch but how they did so overcoming some rather traumatic events. Not to mention the other circumstances surrounding the makeup of team this year. Starting with the failed appeal attempt for Michele Karvinan (mostly likely would have been a Kaz finalist and arguably one of the top 5 players in the country) and with Tapani choosing not to return at the last minute with no real options for replacements. Take the top two offensive threats off any team and see how well they perform. In my opinion only MN, WS or BC could have taken that kind of hit and still maintain a top ten ranking.

I wouldn't argue with that

I don't get the "boned" comment either
consider it's hockey "shaft" would have been a more appropiate term if that's the way you feel

there were 3 IMO who they could have given ROY to, any one of them is fine with me
in fact lots of good freshman this year, the WCHA should remain the top league and be very competitive

Re: WCHA Thread V

Curious who you think got "boned." I was pleasantly surprised that Pankowski got ROTY, but I don't think she stole it from anyone.
I do...and I think it's because of her teammates receiving major awards. Player of the Year and D Player of the Year. That should help to satisfy your curiosity.

I admit that Pankowski didn't have great games against Minnesota, but it wasn't like Pannek did much versus Wisconsin either. I did see Pankowski score a hat trick versus Clarkson, so I find her winning much easier to take than you do.

They do like to spread the recognition around somewhat, and the RotY in 2013 was Brandt, in 2014 was Cameranesi, and I think a future Gopher is likely to be preseason RotY next season. You can't win them all (except in 2012-13 :) ).

I understand it's arguable, and will be argued. I'll admit "boned" is probably too strong a word given the small difference between them as far as raw numbers. I'm a proponent of spreading the wealth when it comes to weekly recognitions during the season. I don't think that should be an objective for year end season awards.

So yeah...I think Pannek should have gotten it. There were / are several stand outs in the freshman class. I'm not opposed to the arguments of those who promote the kid who plays, and plays well on a team with less support. Someone like Schammel may be the most legit pick, all things considered. For the purpose of, or an objective of spreading the wealth she's probably the most deserving and worthy.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Wisconsin looked very good both days. (ARD looked great but she shouldn't rush out on the PP to pass the puck to the opponents, should she?)

Congrats to BSU on their best season ever. ----“Just very, very proud of my hockey team,” Scanlan said. “To play in a championship game … in Vegas, I’m sure the odds would have been pretty astronomical. We’re extremely proud of what we’ve done this year. Of all the years I’ve had coaching, this is probably my funnest, and I owe it all to these young ladies.”----
………….from ARM's recap

Go Gophers! #1 seed means my fear of Gophers not getting their dressing room and bench in the Frozen Four are averted :D

She does tend to play the puck a bit too much outside her area, especially early in the year. She had toned that down, but maybe it wasn't a long term fix.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Thanks for posting, Brooky. Good to see she's making progress, albeit slowly, on what is obviously a terribly difficult road to a full recovery.

Nerves are funny things. About 15 years ago I had an accident that fractured my pelvis. They had to cut my right side open to make repairs and I lost all sensation from my knee to my hip & much of it below the knee. I struggled to walk well. It was about 2 years later that it all changed. It happened all at once without any indication I just felt a warm rush through my leg and it was almost back to normal. I wrote Lisa a note about my experience to let her know it may not be fast or easy but it sounds like she has a good attitude & work ethic. I'd like to think we could see her play again but more I just hope she will be OK.

The story of starting the soccer leagues in Kenya is a great story. Congratulations to Brittany Ammerman on winning the humanitarian award!!

Re: WCHA Thread V

Bemidji has three of the top five scorers from Class A State Champion Thief River Falls coming in next fall. Emily Bergland has led the team in scoring the last three seasons. Don't know how good they'll be but it seems a good route for BSU to go.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Crowell at UMD, Potter at OSU. Can either match Scanlan's achievement at BSU with 20 plus wins overall in their first campaigns at the helm? What are the chances?

Each has a decent shot at 20 wins, given UMD won 20 this past season and Ohio State was victorious 17 times. What will be next to impossible is matching the 10-win improvement that Scanlan demonstrated at BSU.

It was an impressive start for Scanlan. Scanlan's second season is going to be an interesting aspect of the WCHA competition in 2015-2016. Adding some players I think will make them a better team. I'd think a reasonable goal for both Scanlan and Potter would be pounding out 4 more wins in conference play. But...that will be a challenge.

Re: WCHA Thread V

The WCHA transfer rule...sitting a season per in conference transfers. How about defining it's purpose, objective, necessity and or true impact, estimations of success per it's purpose. Does it provide something positive vs. a conference that does not enforce a similar rule?

Out of curiosity.
