Wait a second... why is SCSU taking a bye? They've only played 16 conference games to date, whereas the Badgers, Beavers, and Buckeyes have played 18 conference games already.

Well, it is due to Minnesota State, who have played only 14 conference games and have 14 to play with only 6 weekends remaining. To squeeze the extra two games into their schedule, MSU plays a pair of Monday night games against St. Cloud State on Feb. 2nd and 16th (the first in Mankato, the second in St. Cloud). Since that accounts for one of Huskies' remaining six series, they can take a weekend off.

So when it's all said and done, the WCHA schedule won't be completely in balance until the Tuesday before the final weekend of the regular season. Yuck.

Who the heck thinks its a good idea to have a team have to play 2 Monday conference games? WTH is going on in the heads of the schedulers?

FUN FACTS:
Bemidji State's Ivana Bilic leads the nation in blocks per game at 3.33 and total blocks at 80. BSU's Alexis Joyce is nation's 3rd in both at 2.75 and 66. Madison Hutchinson of BSU is 6th in the nation in blocks at 47.

Bilic is BSU's best +/- at +14 with 2nd best being Joyce at +8. Bilic is 2nd on the team in points with 17 comfortably ahead of 3rd place Stephanie Anderson.

Bemidji's defense is playing strong and combining with great performances by Britni Mowat to make them a dangerous team. Great season so far by Ivana Bilic.

I know Scanlon has said in a BSU Press Conference that Bilic should get looked at for Team Canada consideration.

Scanlon is a genious & those women have bought into what he is selling. It takes guts to put your body in front of a lot of those shots & they deserve to be recognized. The WCHA could be very different if BSU ever gets someone that can score.

Although that part of Beaver hockey was the same under Sertich. How man shots did the Wheelhouse sisters block?

I had forgotten that - right, its their thing I guess. I hate when we play them but I admire the effort they put into the game.

Matching 1-0 Shutouts For UND​
I'm told the two games of this weekend's series were extremely similar. On paper that certainly seems to be the case. FWIW, I can assure you that the game I saw Friday night at the Schottenstein Center and Saturday's game at the Ice Rink couldn't have been more different. But that's a whole 'nother story.

The only goal tonight came on a 4x4 situation. The three players earning scoring points on the play will be my Three Stars. And yet it's important to note that all three contributed so much more than just that one play.


The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun​

Honorable Mention: The Ohio State Roster
What can I say? The whole team played awfully hard and I'm proud of them. They just couldn't buy that one bounce needed to break through the stingy North Dakota defense.


#3 Star: Leah Jensen, North Dakota
A member of the always dangerous first forward line, Leah carried the puck through her defensive end & the neutral zone, fighting off Buckeye defenders along the way. She then sent the puck on to:

#2 Star: Gracen Hirschy, North Dakota
The North Dakota defense did a great job challenging every Buckeye scoring attempt. Quite simply the UND slot was a very difficult place to do business. Buckeye shots were generally taken from the outside, often under a good bit of duress. We'll let Gracen represent the North Dakota 'D' and their superb effort.

Hirschy's Goal was every bit as important and hard-working. It took a fine second effort to finally beat Stacy Danczak.

#1 Star: Shelby Amsley-Benzie, North Dakota
Consecutive shutouts speaks for itself. But Shelby is to be commended for remaining calm and steadfast, despite considerable pressure from the Buckeye offense. 57 total saves; 0 goals allowed. Not a bad weekend's work.

Oh, about that scoring point. Shelby made a nice save, steering the puck to Leah Jensen and launching the play.

Next Up: Road Trip to Ridder Arena to Play The Gophers

Pgb, that weekend was brutal! We really needed points this past weekend with games vs Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, and Wisconsin on the horizon! I just hope we didn't play ourselves out of the top four with that sweep. The funny thing is, if someone would have told me we would hold UND to two goals over the weekend, I would have thought we would have swept them. Unfortunately, that was not the case. As I said in the game thread, though, give UND's kids credit for keeping us to the outside. UND's goaltender gave up a lot of rebounds, but we were nowhere near them to tap them in. It's going to be a big challenge for us to get enough points to stay in the top four. I think we can do it, but it's not going to be easy. If we can somehow split with the big three and sweep Minnesota State at home, that would put us at 45 points. That might be enough points to put us in the top four. We'll see what happens.

I'll be a little more realistic and say they go 15-2-1 over this stretch giving them a huge momentum swing heading into the final four weeks against UND, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio State

This has to do with the previously mentioned fact that MSU has 10 regular-season games still to play in only 4 weekends. They have the Monday night home game against St. Cloud on the 2nd and another Monday game at St. Cloud on the 16th.

St. Cloud is idle over this weekend since they only have 8 games remaining and the MSU games account for two of them.

The Sue/Dawgettes is an interesting matchup. The Sue are hot right now and if they can win 3 out of their next 4 they can claim a stake at being an ncaa team, since OSU and Bemiji haven't been willing to seize the opportunity.

Yeah...I think I wouldn't mind a sweep by the visitors in that one. NoDak really needs that and it would make things more interesting.

I expected Bemidji to cool off some in the 2nd half. If NoDak can't take the bulk of points in Duluth then I'd bet they, and the Buckeyes fight tooth and nail for the 4th place finish 'til the conclusion of the regular season.
