Re: WCHA Thread V

Backstopped by Brittany Mowat’s 31 save performance Bemidji State's Beavers dropped the Duluth Bulldogs this afternoon 4-1. The Bulldog’s Brigette Lacquette opened the scoring at 6:30 of the first period but Duluth was unable to solve Mowat again. It sounded like the Beavers did their usual outstanding job of blocking shots and smothering rebounds. The Beaver’s got goals from Billic, Grenier and Miller with Togus hitting an empty netter to seal the win. This is only the 5th win for BSA against UMD.

Apparently BSU is for real

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Friday, December 5th
UMD 2
Ohio State 2
(UMD Wins Shootout 1-0)

Fit To Be Tied
Purists will tell you there are games that should be allowed to end in a tie. Tonight would fit that description. The proceedings were both even and fiercely contested. Shots were 33-30 for OSU; the count being 30-29 at the end of regulation time. Each team scored a power play goal. Twice OSU broke through for a one goal lead, twice Bulldog determination got UMD back to even.

But alas, the agreed upon rules require shootouts in these circumstances. Jenna McParland's beautifully crafted shootout goal was the one thing that differentiated the two teams tonight. Each team clearly earned a standings point during the 65 minutes of scoreboard time. McParland clearly earned the shootout point. Reality is what it is. Congratulations to Duluth on the shootout win.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Stacy Danczak, Ohio State and Kayla Black, UMD
Maybe Stacy didn't play a perfect game, but she made many brilliant saves while holding her opponent to two goals. Kayla did that too.

#3 Star: (tie) Brigette Lacquette, UMD and Kari Schmitt, Ohio State
Brigette assisted on both of her team's goals. Kari did that too.

#2 Star: Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State
Taylor was very strong in the face-off circle, winning 14 of 26 draws. Many of those wins came in clutch situations. Better still was her tough angle, laser beam shot into the lower left-hand corner of the UMD net. For 7+ minutes, it seemed destined to be the game winning goal.

#1 Star: Jenna McParland, UMD
Jenna certainly sparked the first Bulldog goal. During a UMD PP, McParland grabbed a loose puck in the high slot, and crisply fired it back to Emma Stauber. Next, Stauber sends to Lacquette at the left point. Meanwhile, McParland darts into open space above the right circle. Laquette instantly finds McParland, who steers the puck on to Ashleigh Brykaliuk for the finishing touch. Precision passing all around got the Bulldogs back in the game.

As for the politically incorrect postgame procedure, McParland carried the puck well to the right, drove across the slot, and beat the Buckeye keeper with a slick backhand move.

Next Up: The Saturday Evening Rematch. Face-Off at 6:07 PM EST. Wouldn't miss it; don't mind being a touch late for Football.;)

Re: WCHA Thread V

Anybody listening to the off the record conversation between Madison Packer and Reid Magnum on the Badger feed instead of the official interview with ARD?

Not bad, but I wouldn't have minded hearing the actual interview!

Yes, I think somebody forgot to flip a switch.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Saturday, December 6th
UMD 4
Ohio State 1

3 Bulldog Goals in Less Than 12 Minutes Derail Buckeye Momentum
Hope I'm not taking the easy way out, but I'm just going to recognize the goal scorers this time. Obviously every goal matters in a hockey game. But on this occasion each goal seemed to have an especially large impact on momentum.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie)Zoe Hickel, UMD and Jenna McParland, UMD
Zoe got the Bulldogs rolling. Just when the Buckeyes appeared to be settling into a groove, and ready to build on a 1-0 lead, Zoe halted the progress.

At the end of the game, Jenna's empty-netter finished the job...

#3 Star: Katerina Mrazov, UMD
... though it was Katerina's demoralizing insurance goal that put the Buckeyes in a hole that proved to be too deep to climb from.

#2 Star: Lauren Spring, Ohio State
Lauren should almost get a goal and an assist for her dynamic marker. First, she converted an Alexa Ranahan slapshot into a dangerous tipped shot on goal. The Bulldog goalie did well to make the initial stop, but she left the puck in the slot. Spring sprung into action, lunged for rebound, and jabbed the puck into the net. Lauren's goal opened the scoring; at the time it felt like a significant breakthrough...

#1 Star: Meghan Huertas, UMD
... but the true turning point of the game was Meghan's spectacular individual effort on the PK. Getting the play started, Huertas intercepted a pass intended for the right point. Fighting through the Buckeye defender, she converted the interception into a partial breakaway. Arriving at the OSU slot at the same time as another Buckeye 'D,' she faked a spin-o-rama move -- note the wow factor -- then turned in the opposite direction and steered the puck through the startled goalie. The dramatic goal gave the 'dogs a momentum boost they never really relinquished. Oh, and did I mention she beat both Schmitt Sisters on the same play? Now that's a rarity.

Next Up: The Calendar Will Still Say 2014, but the 2nd Half of the WCHA Schedule begins December 19 & 20 in Bemidji. Go Bucks!

Re: WCHA Thread V

Thanks again to CrankIt for posting the link. Much as I would have preferred a different result, it really was the key moment of the game, if not the entire weekend. FWIW, Huertas gave the Bulldogs their first lead -- after trailing or being tied for almost 100 minutes of hockey.

P.S. to CrankIt: Must spread.

New overtime rule?

So what do all you WCHA fans think of this new rule being used in the AHL? According to the league stats it has significantly cut down on the number of games being decided by shootouts, which I think is a good thing. Assuming the league is determined to have a "winner" for every game, this would be an improvement IMO. As an alternative, the other idea mentioned at the end of the article would be an improvement too, I think.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Hate it - not as much as the stupid shoot out but it still does not reflect the efforts of the entire team.
On the 'good' side the theory is that better skating teams should have an advantage at 4x4 or 3x3 and certainly better conditioning will pay off but someone needs to explain whats wrong with a tie before that would be enough to convince me.

How about this for an alternative: 1:30 clock time of first lines, 1:30 of second, 1:30 third and 1:30 of fourth. Total up the scores

It may be okay for a pro league in lieu of a shootout, but I don't want anything like that in the NCAA. I like that the tie is still counted as a tie after a 5-min OT. Today, the shootout is only impacting he WCHA season, and at least it doesn't include anything that compromises the NCAA result by tampering with the rules for those 5 minutes.

How about this for an alternative: 1:30 clock time of first lines, 1:30 of second, 1:30 third and 1:30 of fourth. Total up the scores
Many teams don't even have a fourth line, and nobody has a fourth set of D. Way too arbitrary and choppy for my taste, so I'd prefer the current 5-min OT that has no special OT rules.

There's nothing wrong with a hard earned tied game. When you're on the underdog team that wasn't supposed to be able to compete with the "better" team and you just earned a hard working tie, you're proud of that point earned in the standings, and that's still a great part of the game. I guarantee the players and coaches of the underdog team don't see that game as boring or dull. To them it was an exciting game they'll not soon forget. Too bad if the fans don't like the final score! Stop trying to "fix" something that has never been broken in the first place!

P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :)

look at the number of tied games in the WCHA mens the last year before it split

but I do agree with the above

IMO, anything is better than a shootout

I was thinking only in the league (WCHA only) in lieu of going straight to a shootout after a scoreless 5 on 5 OT. I also said "assuming the league is determined to have a 'winner' for every game", i.e. they wouldn't go back to the old way of doing things where after a scoreless OT the game would end in a tie, with each team gettine a single point. Reverting back to the way it used to be would be my No. 1 choice as well.

Yeah, that was bordering on sarcasm. I'd rather they went to a cointoss than a shootout. The cointoss would be quicker and just as meaningful. If you insist on it being game related have each coach seal a guess for total SOG in an envelope before the game. In the event of a tie the coach who guessed closest without going over gets the extra point.
