WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

What's the rush with trying to get an overtime done in 5 minutes? I just don't get that. Play 20, then tie.

I think on the men's side, that is partially driven by TV. If you are going to play another 20 minutes, they have to resurface the ice. They don't want to have their viewers sit through a 15-minute intermission and then have somebody score on the first shift of OT. If it goes the full 20 minutes, then it runs over by about 45 minutes into whatever programming is supposed to follow. I guess the thinking is that if it is the postseason, then there is sufficient interest in the game to justify these inconveniences, but not during the season, when combined with the wear and tear of 80-minute games.

I've always felt a 10 minute OT would be the best approach. That amount of time allows teams to get into the same sort of rhythm as regulation, and if it's still tied after that then congrats to both teams on earning a point in the standings after such a hard fought battle.

This is 100% right. But this is the lady's side, why not give the fans the best OT system and bang for their buck. I'd be happy with 10 minutes tough, I agree it lets the teams get into a flow.

they resurface for a shootout, although sure, it's not a complete job

I agree with the others, extend to 10, if it's still a tie, congrats to both teams on their point they earned

Re: WCHA Thread V

They don't resurface for a shootout, only scrape the ice.

leave it to the champion nit picker to bend the discussion in a different direction, whatever they do to the ice, it takes time, and that was the real issue that was being discussed

My point was who cares how much time it takes, resurface and let's play another 10 or 20. Hockey is fun to watch and without TV time constraints, there's no reason to rush to get the game over with.

Ohio State swept Penn State in Hockey Valley over the weekend by scores of 3-1 and 6-0. I won't list all the names, but six different Buckeyes scored in today's game. Freshman goaltender Kassidy Sauve got the shutout today. Stacy Danczak got the win yesterday. Buckeyes get back into WCHA action next weekend at St. Cloud.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Interested to see how UMD responds this weekend against a tough Bemiji and with the coaching fiasco, and also how Bemiji responds playing a tough opponent after that bad run.

MADISON, WIS. -- Wisconsin women's hockey head coach Mark Johnson met with members of the media Monday to preview the No. 3 Badgers' series at Minnesota this weekend.

QUESTION: If you look at the win column or the standings, these games are worth the same. In other ways, is this bigger than some of the other ones you play?

JOHNSON: I don't think it's bigger, I just think it's more enjoyable.

Re: WCHA Thread V

In the conference this weekend:

Ohio State @ St. Cloud State

Bemidji State @ Minnesota-Duluth

Wisconsin @ Minnesota

Does a successful weekend for the Beavers get them back in the top 10? Interesting series to see the Minnesota Duluth response. Beavers won't care about that...they want back in.

Nothing to lose now. Watch for more "stellar" conduct.

Any hiccups from Buckeyes could cost...as far as their ranking anyway. Should be a good series. Friend, and or Fitz should have Huskies in each game.

Expect some primo hockey entertainment in Minneapolis, for sure.

I hate it when the red team wins but dang the games are fun; 2 reams that play the game the right way and with a lot of skill & speed.

EDIT: thats should be Teams, nor reams.

Ohio State takes game one in St. Cloud by a final score of 3-1. Kari Schmitt got the Buckeyes on the board with a pp goal in the first. The Huskies tied the game in the second period on an even strength goal by Alyssa Erickson. Julia McKinnon put the Buckeyes back on top with an even strength goal later in the period. Claudia Kepler added an empty net goal for the final margin. Ohio State outshot the Huskies 27-16. Stacy Danczak got the win for the Bucks and earned 15 saves. Julie Friend saved 24 shots for the Huskies. The teams are back at it tomorrow. With the win, Ohio State is 6-1-1 in their last eight games and have won five in a row on the road.

Re: WCHA Thread V

I just realized how messed up the WCHA schedule still is.

Wisconsin still has a non-conference series and Ohio State has a bye the weekend of the 23rd - 25th. Bemidji State and St. Cloud State have byes on the weekend of Jan. 30th - Feb. 1st.

Wait a second... why is SCSU taking a bye? They've only played 16 conference games to date, whereas the Badgers, Beavers, and Buckeyes have played 18 conference games already.

Well, it is due to Minnesota State, who have played only 14 conference games and have 14 to play with only 6 weekends remaining. To squeeze the extra two games into their schedule, MSU plays a pair of Monday night games against St. Cloud State on Feb. 2nd and 16th (the first in Mankato, the second in St. Cloud). Since that accounts for one of Huskies' remaining six series, they can take a weekend off.

So when it's all said and done, the WCHA schedule won't be completely in balance until the Tuesday before the final weekend of the regular season. Yuck.

Re: WCHA Thread V

At least it is easier to project where SCSU and Mankato are going to finish in spite of the byes and unbalanced number of games. The logjam concerns more the teams in third through sixth.
