WCHA Thread IV

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Tough period for UND. Too many errant/poor passes resulting in giving up possession continually. Their offense doesn't seem overly intense and the skating in many cases seems lethargic...the Lams especially...seems to me. Too bad that miscue by JLam at the UM blue line created the breakaway and resulted in a goal.

Could have been a 1 -1 game with UND mising an open net.

A quick goal by UND to start the third could erase the ominous feel of the second period in a hurry.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final score ... 2-0 Minnesota. Congrats to the Gopher Womens Hockey Team! Good luck to all WCHA Teams in the NCAA Tournament! I'll be watching and cheering for you!

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I'll tell you, with 50 seconds left, when we got called for the penalty and UND had the 6 to 4 advantage, I was not a happy camper, figured they'd sneek one in with 3 seconds left or some bs like that just to end our shut out streak. Did I fear losing?! HA!!! Not for one second, of the entire game. But I did fear they'd get that goal in, and someone asked on twitter, what is the NCAA record for consecutive shut outs?!

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Congratulations to UM.

Don't know what happened in the first period since I only caught the last few minutes due to the WCHA's hiding the link to the game as best they could...and only then with the help of Madge (thanks again , Madge).

But for the rest of the game it seemed to me that UND was possibly playing scared...just like the same time last year vs the same team. But if so, it was way more obvious last year.

Their offense didn't seem to be playing with confidence. Infraction-wise they played with discipline but maybe Idalski's admonition in that regard caused too much of a change in their collective mindset since they are normally a very physical team...sometimes to the point of being quite greasy. So, maybe they were too preoccupied with being called for penalties to play their game and as a result looked like they may be lacking confidence. Kinda how it looked to me.

Thought Benzie played quite well.

Menefee's star is rising fast.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

How about the caffinated camera work? Things is wigglin around like a drunken sailor.

There was that too.

I later thought my string analogy was too generous...should have said a frayed string! That video quality was embarassing.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I'm interpreting the pairwise that if Northeastern loses tomorrow - that Wisconsin is the #8 seed and is in the NCAA tourney. ??

Very interesting... did not see that coming.

My guess is that it would still be UND. I take back the reasoning I previously posted -- it appears that NU will still own the comparison over UND even if they lose tomorrow, but that's due to an NU win in the single game they played against Clarkson, whereas UND went 1-1 against the Knights. I think the committee would discount that given UND's much better RPI. And comparing UND to Wisconsin, UND wins that comparison hands-down.

I noticed this as well. Also, in the UND/NU compare in the event of an NU loss, the TUCs would be 4-10 for NU, and 3-9 for ND, which are very close, and ND had 5 games with Minnesota there. I know you can't just ignore them, but if you are being subjective at all, I think that would tilt toward ND. Also, ND loses a compare to St Lawrence. The particulars there are that the TUC thing goes .263 for SL and .2500 for ND. That is close, and again, ND has games with Minny. The ComOpp part goes 1-5 for SL and 1-6 for ND. I don't know the opponents, but that also is very close. And ND has a much better RPI. So, the committee could tilt that toward ND also, although the men's committee could not, I believe.

It will be interesting.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Right, the men would have less discretion, but UND wins the SLU comparison under the men's rules, whose common opponent comparison rule is designed precisely to address the fallacy that allows SLU to win the comparison in the USCHO women's PWR.

So UND is no. 8 now if the committee uses sensible discretion as in the past, or rigidly applies the better men's rules. The only way UND isn't ahead of Wisconsin is if the committee were to rigidly apply the lousy old rules.

One additional note from the past couple of days... Kudos to UND for sending/bringing a pep band to the Final Faceoff. As "that band guy" for the Gophers, I can say that it is fun to have the perceived "battle of the bands" going in any hockey arena.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Interesting to read/recall that the Women's WCHA is going for its 14th consecutive national title this weekend. The Gophers got "unlucky" #13 out of the way last year in Duluth. As noted in the league press release, the count includes the AWCHA title won by the Gophers in 2000, then all of the tournaments sanctioned by the NCAA.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Pgb-ohio, it is nice to see someone mention the first 3 national championships that were held from 1998-2000 - just as legit but slightly before the NCAA started sponsoring the women's championship. The Patty Kaz award started in '98 as well. Here's the link on USCHO for anybody that is curious regarding the AWCHA titles :)

Also, trivia question of the day: Can you name a player that has won a D1 women's hockey National Championship playing for 2 different teams? For all I know, there may be more than one...but there is at least one who has accomplished that feat.

Pgb, do you plan to come out to NH for Thanksgiving? I have not seen the schedule written in stone yet but I heard that Ohio State will be playing a pair of games at UNH just after Turkey Day.

Minnesota fans know that one. :)

Re: WCHA Thread IV

To tell the truth, I'm drawing a blank. My first thought was Jenny Potter, but I think she was only a Gopher for one year, 98-99, and then moved up to Duluth.
The player in question finished her career at Minnesota.
