WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

There were a lot of good scores this week but only one winner -- NHBEAVERFAN took the weekly honors with a high score of 33. This weekend's Big BG Bust has compressed the top of the standings with MTUHuskyGold now trailing mbenecke by only 1 point. Week 14 is a big weekend for points as there is a full slate of games plus a bonus. You don't want to miss this one. Reminder there is a Thursday game this week. The bonus will remain open until puck drop on Friday as the Thursday game won't have a material affect on the results so if you're late in getting picks in you're still good for the bonus.

2019-2020 WCHA Pick 'Em Playoffs
Now that we’re into the second half of the season it’s time to start thinking about bringin' home the hardware. As mentioned at the beginning of the season there are 3 awards:
o MacNaughton Cup - Goes to the regular season champion as determined by total points
o Mason Cup - Goes to the player with the highest points percentage (based solely on picks, no bonus) during the regular season
o Jeff Sauer Trophy - Goes to the playoff champion

Unlike other contests, the WCHA Pick ‘Em playoffs adopt a single elimination format where players go head-to-head in each round with the winner advancing. Here are the details.

Playoff Seeding
Due to the ever expanding popularity of the WCHA Pick ‘Em contest, this year the top 36 players will make the playoffs. Matches are head-to-head, single elimination with snake seeding for bracket pairings (1 vs. 36, 2 vs. 35, etc.). Seeding and tie breakers are determined in the following manner based on regular season results:
1) Total Points (including bonus)
2) Points (excluding bonus)
3) Total Points earned during the final 2 (or 3, or 4, or…) weeks of the WCHA regular season including bonuses until the tie is broken. Basically the “hotter” player down the stretch is favored.

Play-In Matches and Alternates
With the field expanding to 36, the top seeds in each of the four regions will receive a first round bye. Their opponent will be the winner of a play-in match with 4 other contestants taking place in the first round. Seeds 21-36 are eligible for each of the four play-in matches. Note that this affects the seeding for the other matches but I think it'll still work out.

Players that are outside of the top 36 will be considered alternates in the case that a playoff eligible contestant is unable to participate. Alternates will assume the playoff spot of the contestant they are replacing on a 1-for-1 basis (meaning I’m not going to reseed the entire field at the last second because someone didn’t get their picks in on time).

Playoff Rounds
o First round will be based on the Friday, March 6 WCHA Quarterfinal playoff games with bonuses (4 games total, field reduced from 36 to 16).
o Second round will be based on the Saturday, March 7 WCHA Quarterfinal playoff games with bonuses (4 games total, field reduced from 16 to 8)
o Quarterfinals will be based on the Friday, March 13 WCHA Semifinal playoff games with bonuses (2 games total, field reduced from 8 to 4).
o Semifinals will be based on the Saturday, March 14 WCHA Semifinal playoff games with bonuses (2 games total, field reduced from 4 to 2).
o The championship matchup will be based on the WCHA Championship game on March 21 plus bonuses.

Scoring
o Same as the regular season other than games won’t end in a tie so 3 pts for a win, 0 pts for a loss.
o 2-3 bonus questions for each round worth 1-5 points.
o In all cases ties go to the higher seed.

Good luck!

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

It was a big week for mbenecke who won the week with 35 out of 39 points and also tied for the bonus. He extends his lead for the MacNaughton to 6 over MTUHuskyGold and 17 over puckdude40. There were 85 assists this weekend; here's how the bonus scoring went:
Code:
Contestant Points
Icd80 9
mbenecke 9
crossjcek 8
Hatch_man 8
Laker Dude 8
Scrum Bucket 8
MTUHuskyGold 7
Wi.HuskiesFan 6
Soulbeaver 5
geezer 3
IceKnight81 3
puckdude40 3
mikeeddy19 2
MSUMaverickFan 1
TalonsUpPuckDown	1
In the race for the Mason Cup, sonofcrosscheck hangs on to a slender one-game lead over puckdude40.

There are 226 points available the rest of the year (assuming no ties) and a bonus every week. Plenty of opportunities to make the playoffs.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

The quad winners for week 15 with 25 out of 33 points were gochiefs, MavHockey14, MTUHuskyGold, and TalonsUpPuckDown. And with that week winning performance, MTUHuskyGold is now only one point behind mbenecke in the race for the MacNaughton. For the bonus, with the first game ending in a tie and the GWG being scored at the :48 mark of the second period, the average GWG time was (0:65:00 + 0:20:48)/2 = 0:42:54 or 42 minutes when rounded down. Wi.HuskiesFan, SweeneyHawksHockey, klbaum1077, and geezer each came away with 5 bonus points.

Code:
Player Bonus
Wi.HuskiesFan 5
SweeneyHawksHockey	5
klbaum1077 5
geezer 5
walktheline 4
MTUHuskyGold 4
MTUHuskies 4
Drumstix 4
Soulbeaver 3
Critical Thinker	3
MSUMaverickFan 1
Manurespreader 1
gochiefs 1
<3_Blizzard 1

Meanwhile, sonofcrosscjek maintains his hold on the Mason cup.

Code:
Player Pick %
sonofcrossjcek 0.687
MavHockey14 0.681
MTUHuskyGold 0.681
Stauber1 0.677
puckdude40 0.677
mbenecke 0.677
Scrum Bucket 0.667
IceKnight81 0.664
MissThundercat 0.663

Lastly, I've added a new column to the standings which shows the percentage each player has of making the playoffs based on 100 simulations of each player's picking history this season. Reminder that the top 4 receive a first round bye and places 21-36 will each be in a first round 4-way play-in game. There are six weeks remaining in the regular season and 188 points left.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

The week 16 winner is Miss Thundercat who rode some timely bonus picking and unabashed homerism to her third weekly win, going 21-for-27. BIG WEEK FOR THE BONUS! There were 17 special teams goals this week; nearly three quarters of the field picked up at least 1 bonus point.

Meanwhile, sonofcrosscjek extends his lead for the Mason Cup to two games over MTUHuskyGold and Stauber1.
Code:
Player Pick %
sonofcrossjcek 0.686
MTUHuskyGold 0.679
Stauber1 0.675
MavHockey14 0.673
mbenecke 0.671
puckdude40 0.663
MissThundercat 0.663
Scrum Bucket 0.662

You may notice some changes at the top of the leaderboard with MTUHuskyGold taking over first place from our long time leader mbenecke in what is becoming a two-way race for the MacNaughton. While all eyes are on the leaders, let's not forget the other end of the standings and the 5-for-2 dogfight for those final playoff spots. Two weeks ago Footballguy51 was 35 points out of the playoffs. Today that number is down to 18. There are 156 points and 5 weeks remaining. Even if the scoreboard shows that you've punched your ticket, the only way to guarantee your spot is to get those picks in!

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Week 17 belongs solely to Soulbeaver who correctly picked the winner of all 8 games this week. There were 238 penalty minutes this week; no one picked up any bonus points. No movement at the top of the standings. No movement in the race for the final playoff spots. No movement in the Mason Cup standings. Not much for me to write about.

The bonus this week is the total number of penalties called, not the total minutes.

Miracles happen! I actually got a bonus point!

How do you even pick ties? Just leave no selection for that game? Every once in a while, usually for non-con games, I'll see an option for it but most games just display the two teams to select and no third option.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Conference games cannot end in a tie for conference standing purposes. For NCAA ranking purposes, the game ends after the 5 on 5 OT period.

So for the pick 'em, conference games do not have a tie option.
