WCHA first round: UAA @ Minnesota

Re: WCHA first round: UAA @ Minnesota

Ok, I am the hated Sioux fan. But, in all honesty, can anyone in Gopher Nation tell me how on earth Lucia has kept his job? Seriously, I think UM does not play inspired hockey. You can correct me if I am wrong, I am not throwing barbs here. In all honesty, I went to the UM/UND series in GF and even when the Gophers won on Friday it was not like they were punishing the Sioux. I think the Sioux have had the better of the series for a few years...correct me if I am wrong...but what I have noticed in the past few years is that UM does not play with fire in the belly. I played Div. I hockey and when we played the Gophers it was a frickin nightmare. Wisconsin wone the NT that year but we beat Wisconsin twice. We got swept by MN and it was the only time I felt like I did not belong on the ice. My point here boys is that I think UM needs a new coach. Am I the only one who thinks this way? I actually like this Lucia guy, I am sure he is a good coach. But, let's face it, Gopher hockey is not what it used to be. With the most talent laden hockey state in the country MN should be winning at a higher percentage. Just MHO. Every year I simply cannot believe this guy keeps coming back as the coach. Dean Blais said it best. There is a time when you just have to leave a program. He left after 10 years at UND, he said he should have left after 7. UM should offer Blais BIG MONEY and the national championships would come.

Congrats to UAA on a well earned sweep. It was fun to watch a confident, well coached team & it was obvious they knew what it took to get the wins. The other team out there? Not so much.
Best of luck during your extended trip to the Twin Cities. :)

Compromising pictures of Maturi?

I will attend the F5 in a UAA jersey in honor of the team that unceremoniously swept mine out of the ****ing playoffs and ended its abortion of a season.

The only reason Lucia still has the job is because of the two national titles and the U's lack of desire to buy out his contract (multiple buyouts lately = no $$$).

If there isn't significant improvement next season, there is no way the U will extend his contract. Of course, knowing the idiocy of this athletic department, they could sign him to a 5 year extension if the team starts 10-0.

Yes - the only one. I havent heard/read anyone else suggest that idea. But I live in the cave next door...

Well done, Seawolves. I watched both games on Fox Sports and your guys looked as good as I've ever seen under Shyiak. You pretty much out-everythinged Minnesota this weekend.

Good luck in the Final Five.

Re: WCHA first round: UAA @ Minnesota

Thanks for all the well wishes for my team, it does mean a lot. And it's great knowing fans will be cheering for the green & gold!

I was scratching my head last night while watching the game. Under Woog, I used to dread UAA having to play at the Mariucci, not so much now. The fans are so apathetic, why? For much of both games, the joint was dead. Your paper said the fans were in a coma. 9300 fans can give you a huge advantage, even when down, yet the team never got that edge from the fan base. Is the lack of emotion and desire that the team displayed contagious?

One other thing, UAA blocked 50 shots on the weekend, the Gophers how many? At one point last night UAA had blocked 20 to the Gophers 2. Either they didn't want it badly enough, or Lucia is recruiting prima donna NHL'ers (don't you have 19 draft picks?) who are above that level of play and don't want to get dinged up. It would be very interesting to compare the level of talent that prior UM coaches recruited to Lucia's. I bet, on paper, the talent level didn't look nearly as good as under tDon, but he is not getting the talent out of these guys for whatever reason. I think you need to start recruiting in state players who bring their lunch pails to every game (I believe UAA has zero draft picks), like you used to.

Lots of things going on here, but it seems (as so many have said before) you need a coaching change. When Talafous ran UAA's program into the ground, we had a ton of people email our AD and threaten to not renew season tickets if he were rehired. Maybe you need an all out mutiny.

Don't take this wrong Suze, but it is a pretty depressing time for those of us who are long-time Gopher fans to see UAA fans and former players from a different school offering advice on what they think the MN program has to do to recover. The fact that it has gone beyond opposing fans enjoying that MN is down, to them being concerned because they seem to realize that having a strong program at MN is generally good for college hockey, just sinks home how bad things have gotten for us fans. In other words, I appreciate the concern, but it doesn't actually help.

Hopefully they will keep Lucia and a lot of the rich old bags will drop their season tickets and be replaced by students or younger fans who actually cheer for thier team. It was a **** morgue in there last weekend!

Shot Blocking 101

Under coach Gasparini and under assistant Coach Blais at UND, Craig Ludwig earned his spot on the team by blocking shots. I recall an article where Craig Ludwig was a walk-on trying out for the team and the coaches liked what they saw, kept him on the team, and fired shots at him after practices to develop his shot blocking skills. His shot blocking skills became legendary in the NHL where he was likened to a second goalie and helped Montreal and Dallas win the cup.

Have a feeling that under a Dean Blais coached program for example, shot blocking drills would become a part of the hockey curriculum.
