Also close. CCNY. The greatest triumph (1950) turned into the greatest tragedy one year later when CCNY got involved in the first and worst point shaving scandal in history. Their players got involved with another player, who was hooked up with gamblers, when playing summers in the Catskills. Very sad. Very small money, of course. One of the cable movie channels did a special on the team a few years back and what a sad outcome it was for these city kids who brought so much joy to the apple. Players at three other NYC teams were implicated.

I hate to admit it, but every time Skalbeck's name is mentioned, I think of a phrase the gunnery sergeant used in "Full Metal Jacket." First word, "skull." I'm so ashamed.
Jay covering every base possible speaking of Ostrow's status: "We'll know in a week or two weeks, possibly Monday or Tuesday." Yup, that covers it.

Dam I was close. They won the NIT and NCAA championships in 1950 and 1 year later was the scandal. That essentially ended CCNY as a national basketball power. FYI, CCNY is located in West Harlem on Convent Avenue and has about 13,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students. Most students are NYC residents.

That was the perspective of the TV special: city kids, city school, integrated team, unifying force in the community, etc.etc. Yet a year after their big triumph, it was all gone.
