WCHA Final Five: Minnesota vs Colorado College

Re: WCHA Final Five: Minnesota vs Colorado College

The MN-UMD relationship is bizarre. The Gopher fans I know root for UMD almost as if it were their own team. The Bulldog fans I know do not like the Gophers at all.

Of course I root for UMD. They have nice colors, and my taxes are paying for that campus, too.

Although the Gophers fired 35 SOG, had lots of Grade A scoring chances, the best Gophers were not their best tonight. Wilcox did not get a lot of help tonight from the Gopher D and the Gophers suffered only their second shutout of the season. There were not a lot of rebounds available either due to Howe's outstanding play between the pipes for the second straight game.

The Broadmoor trophy is named after the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which has a long history of supporting college hockey. Good luck to CC who have never won the Broadmoor and perhaps it would be a fitting end to this tournament if they won it tomorrow night against the BADgers and get the autobid to boot.:) But my guess is Bucky takes the Broadmoor tomorrow night.

CC did a great job against UND. And against DU. Often its when you play and how styles mesh that determine outcomes.

I just don't see CC lasting another 3 periods (after yesterdays 4 periods) against a team with the deep horses that Minnesota has. Minnesota could even get knocked out of the NCAAs early, but I'd put money on today's game.

Hope you didn't drop too much cash. :-)

I'd be interested in hearing Gopher fans point of view on this after the salt has been flushed out of the wound. Having seen CC on this recent run (been at their last five games where they are 4/5-4 straight W's) tonight felt like Groundhog day. They stuck to the same game plan they have run. Goph fans felt like the Gophs didn't play well ( I felt the same way about DU last weekend). The truth is CC executed perfectly and in so doing makes their opponent look ineffective.

I feel like I did last night. CC played really well and the Gophers did not play at their best, but credit to CC for that. Once CC had the lead the Gophers appeared to be tight and pressing, especially in the third. Again, good luck to CC, would love to see them take the Broadmore for the first time in the last true F5.

Because SCSU, UMD, and Mankato don't have any history if by chance any of them became a national power then it's different.

Same here. Not taking anything away from CC. They executed well. Gophs played poorly. Some of it was CC pressure, but even when there was no pressure, they were making uncharacteristic errors. And half the team was standing around waiting to react, rather than trying to out-hustle CC and make things happen. Worst performance in a long time from them. And I am not saying Gophs would have definitely won if they played better. Gophs played much better against Bemidji last week, who also played very controlled game, and has less talent than CC, but still barely eked out victories. Howe still might have been the difference, but MN didn't even give themselves the chance to win that game last night.
