WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

Re: WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

6700 average?? Could have fooled me. How many seats does World Arena have? Unless UND is at CC, the arena is usually only half full. Well, I guess if capacity is 13K, you would be correct..but I have been to many games at both CC and DU and there's ALWAYS alot of open seats, especially in the "reserved" section where CC staff and alums have season tickets and don't show.

I will work on getting my facts straight...YOU and your CC fanbase should work on being better fans! Stop by and say hello in St. Paul..I will be one of the 5000+ Sioux fans (IN ATTENDANCE) who actually support our team.

GO SIOUX!!!

Wow.

Yeah, CSWA is a venerable ghost town when DU plays there. Thank God only the mighty UND can boost CC's attendance. But, at least the accuracy of your posts hasn't improved at all since JS called you out...

You have better be wearing Green on St.Patty's day.

Well, of course The Ralph is always full. What else do you guys have to do in Grand Forks? Also, it's pretty easy to be a fan of a team with the kind of success UND has had for a long, long time.

Don't take my word: Look the numbers up for yourself. Yes, there are no-shows, as there are at every pro and college venue in the nation. CC is a school of 1900 students and continually draws better than almost every team in the country. DU plays in major a pro-sports market where college hockey is a tiny priority to most people, yet they, too, draw well.

I do support my team. I missed a total of 4 home games this year, and it's an hour drive for me each way. I do my part, as do many of us. Unfortunately, I do not have the disposable income right now to travel with my team. Believe me, I wish I did. But that speaks nothing of whether I am dedicated because anyone who knows me understands my dedication as a fan.

Completely agree. I live in Castle Rock, and have been to several CC games over the past 4-5 years. They do an extremely good job of filling up the CSWA. On top of the fact that CC is such a small school, the arena is not on campus. While it is true that games against DU and UND (along with Minnesota and Wisconsin ) draw more than others, that's true for pretty much any arena in the WCHA.

Growing up a Minnesota fan and coming to CC as a student expecting the same atmosphere and fan-base as Gopher games did disappoint, no doubt about it. But it's unrealistic to compare CC to schools like UND and Minnesota because of the surrounding environment and the emphasis of the entire school itself.

Minnesota is a hockey state - everyone grows up playing or watching. And in North Dakota... well... what else do you have to do?! (hehe) But people in Colorado put priorities on outdoor activities that you can do in the beautiful weather here and hockey isn't really on the radar.

As far as how the campuses differ, it's way more than even just size. Yeah, CC is really small, which gives us less student fans to draw on. But CC is also a small liberal-arts school with extremely academically-minded students. Ice hockey and women's soccer are our only two D1 sports and neither get much publicity on campus. There are multiple other events going on every weekend night and the school spirit for sports just isn't emphasized.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a **** shame. I go to nearly all the games and am always sad by the student section. But I love seeing how many people from the community show up and I'm proud when it gets loud in there!

Wish I could be coming home for spring break to watch the boys play in St. Paul!!

Re: WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

It's not just college hockey that doesn't sell out in Colorado. Every college sport at every Colorado school struggles to fill the stadium or arena.

We live in a state that is oversaturated by both spectator and participatory sports, great weather and many, many things to do, and we are a state filled with people who grew up elswhere and keep their old sports allegiances.

I would add that we live in a state with bandwagon fans as well. You know who the diehards are when things aren't going well. Any Avalanche home game would be a great example of that right now. I do realize that bandwagon fans exist everywhere but I wish there would be more support when things aren't going well.

I don't think Colorado is any worse than most places when it comes to bandwagon fans. Heck, the Broncos still sell out, the Nuggets drew respectably well even during those lousy years, and it took the Rockies many bad years before the attendance reflected their poor play. The Avs, well, I think a lot of that has to do with ticket prices. I still love the Avs, but I don't really go to games and haven't for several years. I also happen to think that college hockey is much better...and it's much cheaper as well.

With how much it costs to take a family to a pro sporting event, I can understand why so many more people show up when the team is good. It's not just Denver, it's basically everywhere.

As far as college hockey goes, CC and DU both draw very well. Air Force plays in a much smaller venue, but they sell out most of their games nowadays as well, and I believe they actually averaged over 100% of capacity again this year. I have no complaints over the way our state supports college hockey, especially because hockey has never really been a part of the "culture" here.

Re: WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

With all due respect, this is not last year...
Nope. UND has a better team this year than they did last year. :p

It should be a good weekend of hockey. I wouldn't be surprized to see UND, DU, or UMD walk out as champions. BSU, CC, or UAA would surprize me.
Congrats to BSU, for whatever reason the Beavers sure had UNO's number this year. Bakala had career games. I think UNO could have done some damage in St. Paul, but just could not solve BSU this season.
No kidding! While anyone can beat anyone on any given night, I personally feared UNO more in St. Paul than any other team. But they just couldn't solve BSU this year.
In any game that UND plays there will not be a neutral fan in the building. They will either be a UND fanatic or a rabid fan for the opposing team.
I guess that shows we're relevant. :D
Might as well do a test run for a couple of years from now when the BTHC is up and running.
Doesn't that mean we should move the games to REA? ;) :D

Re: WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

Perhaps we should give a section of the Xcel to each CC, DU and UAA fan. They might get close to having a fan in each section!

Re: WCHA Final 5 (6) ((5)) - You Know (I Think) What I Mean

The important question that remains unanswered is what will be given away before the Championship game? Foam fingers? Foam sticks? Beanies? This needs to be found out!
It will be something that says "NDSU" on it. :D
whatever it is, it will be more than North Dakota will give out as they have hosting their last post season game. As the North Dakota State Legislature played their hand and will wait for the NCAA to play theirs. I foresee a lot more tractor pulls and lawn mower races in the ‘Ralph.
This is going to get very interesting. The ND Attorney General has already offered the legal opinion that the Legislature has no consititutional authority to tell the State Board of Higher Education and UND what they can and can't do. The SBHE is a seperate branch of government in the ND Constitution. This whole thing could end up in the ND Supreme Court.
I do support my team. I missed a total of 4 home games this year, and it's an hour drive for me each way. I do my part, as do many of us. Unfortunately, I do not have the disposable income right now to travel with my team. Believe me, I wish I did. JS, anyone who regularly reads this board knows you're a dedicated fan. :)

Unlike the state of North Dakota, we in Colorado have tons of great things to see and do. It is called variety! In North Dakota, you only have one good thing going for you! The Sioux. Heck, even you know that, and that is why you no longer live in North Dakota! If you ask me, I would not brag just because you have one good thing in the whole state going for you!

By the way, if I could get off work I would be in St. Paul. With 58 or 59 college teams for CC to be #6 in the nation in attendance speaks well considering the many great things to do around these parts. Like I said North Dakota has one good thing! Enjoy your one thing!!

Go Tigers!!

CC fans will prove once again this weekend how much they have to do by not showing up to support their team.

This argument is awesome. CC fans have better things to do than going to CC games. IALTO!
