WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Thanks for the recommendations. My wife says pizza, so looks like we'll be trying 516 Pizza Pub tomorrow night. My daughter is asking if the rink is cold - any help? Thanks & wish we could be there tonight...

It can be cold at times. I normally have on a long sleeve T-shirt, my hoodie, and jersey. Hope you enjoy 516 pizza.

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

We had a great time! There's a place in Findlay I've wanted to check out for a while, so we went there first (still a shame UF dropped hockey & I can't believe its been over 15 years). Unfortunately, we ended up running short on time, so just grabbed Five Guys quick there before driving up to BG rather than pizza. The rink reminded me a little of the old John Glas Fieldhouse at Bemidji State, with the cinderblock walls & low ceiling. The video board was severely underused in terms of replays. Maybe one goal of the seven was shown on the board. As to the game, wow! Tons of penalties, the amazing two extra attacker goals plus the OT winner for Northern and a lot of NMU fans made it a blast. The BGSU fans we talked with around us were very nice. All-in-all, I'd go again. I miss having college hockey closer.

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Also, media/video related question. Why has BGSU not posted ANY game highlights on YouTube this year? The thing I remember being most excited about when the CCHA schools came into the league was that conference did a spectacular job of posting highlights quickly every weekend. This seems to have slipped badly in recent years, and IMHO, reflects very poorly on the WCHA.

Michigan Tech seems like one of the few that does that...I've seen BGSU post some tweet with highlights but not youtube videos...

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

So the WCHA had 15 non-conference games since December 12, 2019...on the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast we all guessed the league would win 7-8 of the possible 17 games including guest Drew Evans from BGSUhockey...the league ended up going 3-11-1 with the Huskies going 3-1-1 and the rest of the league going 0-10-0. LSSU, BSU, MSU, and BGSU all laid eggs with LSSU coming the closest to winning. What a disappointing stretch for the league. Hopefully NMU can find a way to get some wins against Cornell or this is looking like a 2-bid max league.

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Seems to me, even two teams is somewhat optimistic at this point. On the plus side, NMU's SOS should go up with games against Cornell, MSU and Tech left.

Question for anyone smarter than me: how much is that loss to UAH hurting NMU's PWR right now?

you can check yourself on CHN's pairwise site.
https://www.collegehockeynews.com/ratings/pairwise/#
NMU would be 16th in PWR right now with an RPI of 0.5414*

Also I say 2 because anyone can upset the MSU, its happen a few times...

it's a tall order to ask NMU to beat Cornell at Ithaca. They are big, strong, fast and skilled.
I think they are equal to any team in the country.

good luck to them.

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Nice work on this week's Chasing MacNaughton podcast!

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Interesting to look at overall success away from home for the 10 conference teams so far.

9 road wins, 1 neutral site win - Minnesota State
8 road wins, 2 neutral site wins - Michigan Tech
8 road wins - Bowling Green
6 road wins - Northern Michigan
6 road wins - Alaska
5 road wins - Bemidji State
3 road wins - Ferris State
2 road wins - Lake Superior State
1 road win - Alaska-Anchorage

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

So looking at the past three seasons (since the WCHA went to a 3 point-per-win system) the fourth place team finished the regular season with the following point totals:

2018-19 - 50 points (LSSU)
2017-18 - 46 points (Bemidji)
2016-17 - 44 points (BGSU)

I'm eliminating the current bottom 4 from contention for home ice in the first round (Lake State is 9 points out of 4th with two extra games played).

Five of the top 6 teams have 12 conference games remaining, so that's 36 points available (Alaska has only 10/30 available). Let's assume that with 42 already, Minnesota State will be one of the teams at home in the first round. The other five teams currently have these point totals:

37 - Bemidji
33 - Northern
28 - Bowling Green
28 - Alaska
25 - Tech

What's the magic number going to be to get at least that #4 spot? What will it take to get the even more coveted 2nd spot (and home ice for the second round)?
