WCHA 2017-18 Season

There must be some sort of bid process. In the early years, it was held at community rinks in Bloomington, Rochester, and Blaine. UND hosted once before joining the league and once after. UMD has hosted twice in years when it also hosted the NCAA FF. Bemidji also hosted once. The most common host has been Ridder, in part because of location, and in part because the facility is about the right size and the U of M gets a lot of practice at hosting tournaments in a variety of sports.

Thanks. Just looked at the site - 9 since 2004 hosted at Ridder! None at LaBahn. Wisconsin ought to bid on it. They can’t host the FF, and as discussed finishing first in the league now costs them 2 home games.

Wisconsin would have two problems. One is that they are reluctant to play games in LaBahn while something else is going on in the Kohl Center, and during that time of year, it is hard to find a time where the Kohl Center is idle for a day and a half. The other is that for a new arena, LaBahn's pressbox is small, and there is no logical area to which you could overflow. The old DECC in Duluth had that problem, but that meant placing media personnel at tables set up in the stands, and LaBahn doesn't have much seating as it is.

Miller was the only coach who expressed much displeasure about Ridder being the host site so often. Wisconsin has never had a problem with winning the WCHA Tourney there.

Great insight as always, ARM.

From a purely financial standpoint it needs to be in Rodentapolis. That location has the best prospects of getting the most fans, even if LaBahn was on par with Ridder in every way, though the subjective side of me would whine about it quite a bit.

UW could possibly bid with the Dane County Coliseum, but again the best spot is in Ridder.

but again the best spot is in Ridder.

That's gotta be tough for you to be that honest...You should try that with your paint thinner addiction as well...Especially with the depression you're feeling about the green and gold. ;)

I have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating, and has to have changed this school year:

I read an article a number of years ago about new hi-def video screens being installed at Camp Randall. It described how instead of installing computers, etc to control the video screens specifically at Camp Randall, they saved X amount of money by running a fiber cable from the already-existing video control room at the Kohl Center to Camp Randall, about a mile away. That is, the same control equipment that ran the video screens at the Kohl Center also controlled the screen at Camp Randall. And that meant (thought it would just about never come up) that holding an event at Kohl and Camp Randall at the same time couldn't have video at both.

When LaBahn was built (immediately next to Kohl), I assume that no additional video control capability was added; screens at LaBahn were run off the same controller as Kohl and Camp Randall. That meant that if one wanted to have something at LaBahn and Kohl at the same time, one or the other simply could not have anything on their video screens.

This year, they finally added hi-def video screens at the Field House (for volleyball, immediately next to Camp Randall Stadium). And they *certainly* have events at the Kohl Center and the Field House simultaneously. That means that a second video control capability has to have been installed somewhere. And assuming they did so 'properly', those two controllers could drive screens at any of the four venues - Kohl, LaBahn, Field House, Camp Randall Stadium - no matter where they might be physically located.

And then this year on Dec 2nd (when they had a mess of a scheduling problem, for various reasons), a women's basketball game started at Kohl at 11 AM along with a women's hockey game at LaBahn starting at noon. I made a point to note that there was indeed 'video' at LaBahn - it would have been pretty noticeable if there had not been - and I assume there was video at Kohl for basketball.

Any and all other scheduling conflicts may still exist, but if 'video' was a stumbling block to WCHA hockey at LaBahn that particular weekend, it isn't any more.

I don't know how the B16 if about scheduling but it seems they could be induced to leave Kohl alone for one weekend. If W was in the thing I think the turn out could fill the lower bowl, they do a good job for the fill the bowel games there. Don't know if the WCHA would allow $1 seats though. We may see how Ridder crowds are without MN in it this year. W fans do deserve to have the games but given the situation ARM describes I just don't see how it can happen.

Re: WCHA 2017-18 Season

I don't know how the B16 if about scheduling but it seems they could be induced to leave Kohl alone for one weekend.

The conflict for WCHA women's final four weekend is (almost always?) Wisconsin High School team wrestling tournament (the individual wrestling championships are the weekend before; and, yes, they hold wrestling at the 'same time' as WCHA women's first round games). Nothing to do with Big Ten scheduling (other than maybe clearing out basketball, men and women, and men's hockey for the weekends; wrestling finished up on Saturday, so that can still get a basketball game or two in on Sunday)

Now, five years ago or so, for some reason, girls basketball got moved out of the Kohl Center up to Green Bay (the Resch Center). So I guess getting wresting moved isn't completely out of the question. But...

Re: WCHA 2017-18 Season

Final Score From Friday, January 5th
Penn State 5
Ohio State 1

I Hate To Nitpick, But...
... There's No Choice. I have to pick Nitttany Lions for all 3 Stars.

Now this wasn't really a 5-1 rout. You can discount the empty-netter and the very late goal. But on the downside, 3-1 is a pretty accurate representation of Friday's game. Penn State was the better team, pretty much across the board.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: The Ohio State 4x3 Unit
From a Buckeye perspective, the one shining moment was the 4x3 power play goal. Crisp passing by Jincy Dunne & Dani Sadek controlled play up high, and they slowly tightened the noose. A great feed from Jincy gave Julianna Iafallo a clear path to the net; Julianna finished the play with a strong power move. The goal gave the Buckeyes a real shot of adrenaline. For a few minutes, a major comeback seemed like a possibility. But the PSU empty net goal snuffed out the comeback bid.

#3 Star: (tie) Meike Meilleur, Penn State; Sophie Slattery, Penn State; and Bella Sutton, Penn State
The first goal appeared to be set play off an offensive zone face-off. The draw went back to Sutton on the point. Slattery, who had lined up in the left wing position, darted into the right corner, causing the 'D' to momentarily lose track of her. Meanwhile, Meilleur maneuvered into the slot. The passes went bang-bang-bang; Sutton to Slattery to Meilleur. Meike drove her shot just inside the left post. For a Buckeye partisan, it was a little difficult to watch. But for a student of the game, it was a thing of beauty.

Confidential To #11: Great to see a Mounds View Mustang doing so well at the D-1 Level.

#2 Star: Hannah Ehresman, Penn State
31 Saves on 32 Buckeye Shots. Few rebounds allowed. The teams' shot totals moved forward in lock step throughout the contest, but Hannah was the keeper in control. Without the 4x3, she would have had a well earned shutout. A fine night's work.

#1 Star: Katie Rankin, Penn State
Penn State's third line started the game, and deservedly so. Center Katie Rankin was on the ice for three PSU goals. Her two tallies converted a tenuous 1-0 lead into a comfortable 3-0 advantage. Katie's first goal was a brilliant tip; her second the result of hard work in the slot.

Wake-Up Call Answered
You might call Friday night's game a dominating upset by the Nittany Lions. It was certainly an in-your-face challenge, given that the deal went down on Ohio State's Home Ice.

Happily the Buckeyes responded with a much improved compete level on Saturday. Determination and intensity were in abundance. At one point Maddy Field was covered from head to toe in ice shavings after an attempt to get to the net. Getting up she looked like a football lineman on a muddy day. And Maddy wasn't alone. All through the line-up you could find Buckeyes willing to answer the call.

Honorable Mention: (tie) Bella Sutton, Penn State and Katie McMillan, Penn State
Don't be fooled by the shot disparity. Penn State was a tough out. Top marks go to the PSU 'D' Corps for making scoring so difficult. I'm recognizing Bella and Katie because each was credited with 4 shot blocks.

#3 Star: (tie) Liz Schepers, Ohio State; Tatum Skaggs, Ohio State; and Lauren Boyle, Ohio State
Like Friday, the first goal of the game had a huge impact. But this time it belonged to the Buckeyes. Just over halfway through regulation time, Kassidy Sauve teed up the disc in the defensive slot. Boyle swooped in, collected the puck, and forced it through traffic to Skaggs. From there, Tatum and Liz wound up with a 2 on 1. When Shepers buried the Skaggs pass, the Ice Rink exploded. 90 minutes of frustration had come to an end.

#2 Star: Kassidy Sauve, Ohio State
24 Saves on 24 Nittany Lion Shots. Not a heavy workload in terms of quantity, but there definitely were some tough saves needed to preserve the shutout. Just as importantly, Kassidy brought some much needed intensity and focus to the Ice Rink today. When the Buckeyes returned to the ice for the 3rd Period, there was a slight break with tradition. Usually the Buckeyes enter the ice surface in numerical order. Today Sauve cut to the front of the line, then gave each of her teammates a high five and some encouragement as they hit the ice. Very nice to see.

#1 Star: Grace Zarzecky, Ohio State
Though surrounded by hustle and determination on all sides, no one was working harder than Grace. Call it Chicago Fire. The fact Zarzecky wound up with a penalty shot was sweet justice. The moment she nailed it was tremendously satisfying.

The right-handed Zarzecky moved down the slot in deliberate fashion. Approaching the PSU net, she eased slightly to the left, drawing the keeper with her. Grace then smartly deposited the puck inside the right post. Now I'll allow that with the benefit of hindsight, the PSU goalie probably wishes she had been forward a bit, in order to take away some of the angle. But the bottom line is that Grace made a calm, intelligent play and earned the invaluable insurance goal.

Up Next: The Buckeyes once again host the CHA; this time Robert Morris comes to town. The series has major pairwise implications, and is not to be missed. See you at the Ice Rink!

Re: WCHA 2017-18 Season

Final Score From Friday, January 12th
Ohio State 5
Robert Morris 0

Offense Found; Defense Sound
The story begins with the aggressive Robert Morris forecheck. At the start, the Colonials put great pressure on the Buckeye breakout, literally attacking players as they emerged from behind the net. RMU had some success causing Buckeye turnovers and creating dangerous chances. I mean, who the heck has EVER caused a Jincy Dunne turnover? I can't remember the last time.

Call it a high risk, high reward strategy. Ultimately the Buckeye 'D' was strong enough to deny the Colonials any reward. On the risk side, stretching your defense over the full 200 feet creates some open space. The Buckeye offense loved that open ice. The result was a satisfying 5 goal output. They could have had more.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Top Star Of The 1st Period: Rebecca Freiburger, Ohio State
The early going was end-to-end action, with great chances both ways. As is so often the case, the first goal was going to have a great impact on the game. Rebecca provided it, masterfully steering a Grace Zarzecky centering pass into the net.

Top Stars Of The 2nd Period: (tie)Emma Maltais, Ohio State; Tatum Skaggs; Ohio State and Charly Dahlquist, Ohio State
Our Maltais Falcon flew back to town this week. And the Maltais/Dahlquist/Skaggs line? They're baa-ack! The offensive spark they provided was great to see. Check that. The offensive spark they provided was absolutely thrilling.

I'm going to fudge a little and file the second Buckeye goal with the 2nd Period Production Totals. (It actually came with 1:34 left in the 1st.) Production Totals: 2 Goals & 1 Assist For Tatum; A Goal & Assist For Emma; An Assist for Charly. The 3 goal outburst turned a tight 1 goal game into a 4-0 tour-de-force.

Top Star Of 3rd Period: Kassidy Sauve, Ohio State
Drove the icy Columbus freeways last night. Made it to a little bungalow called the OSU Ice Rink. There stood Kassidy Sauve: Tall, Calm, Smart, Sharp & Strong.

Of course Sauve had lots of help from her teammates. But sometimes as a goalie, you stand alone. So a-LO-ne; so alone. But there was no reason for fear; Kass was dynamite for two hours or more. She's the player who can change the mood from sad to gladness. And we're putting the rest of the College Hockey World on notice. Her Mojo's Rising. Gotta keep on rising...

RMU put on a big closing push, particularly on the power play. For the 3rd period, they showered 19 shots on the Buckeye net. But Kassidy shut the door, completing her second straight shutout.

Goalie Woman - You're Our Woman. Keep On Shutting The Doors.

Final Score From Saturday, January 13th
Ohio State 5
Robert Morris 2

Fine Sweep Against A Strong Team
Lots of fun this weekend. It was truly gratifying to see a 5 goal output both days. Halfway through the first period Saturday, the Buckeyes held a 3-0 lead. The route was on, right?

Hardly. The Colonials are a proud, talented team that never gives up. After the initial scoring success, the Buckeyes really had to circle the wagons to hold on to this one. Make no mistake, these were Quality Wins. No matter what the Final Pairwise Calculation says.;)

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Jincy Dunne, Ohio State; Lauren Boyle, Ohio State and Dani Sadek , Ohio State
Each of these Buckeye defenders found the scoresheet. Dani had an assist; Lauren a pair of assists. Jincy's slap shot from the blue line with 10 minutes to go essentially ended the game. But more importantly, they were the core of Saturday's bend-but-don't-break defense. Countless the times the Buckeye 'D' cleared dangerous rebounds from the slot, or otherwise did just enough to disrupt the RMU attack. Particularly on the PK.

#3 Star: Maggie LaGue, Robert Morris
The Colonials are a hardworking, determined group; and no one outworks Maggie. Lague gets lots of minutes; it seemed like she played half the game. She's an impact player. While her team lost 5-2, Maggie finished the day at +2. Lague was credited with 3 blocked shots, and may have had more. Fine player.

#2 Star: Kassidy Sauve, Ohio State
44 Saves on 46 RMU Shots. In previous games I've been known to remark that a shutout is a shutout, even if there wasn't a heavy workload. This was a heavy workload. The Robert Morris Power Play was an absolute onslaught; the bombs were bursting in air. But at the end of 6 ferocious Colonial Power Plays, the flag was still there. And without Kassidy as the last line of defense, it may not have been.

#1 Star: Charly Dahlquist, Ohio State
In today's scoring parade, Charly was the Girl On Fire. Sometimes having a Hunger for the Games pays off big. That describes Dahlquist's Saturday. In the first 9:04, she had two goals and an assist. In the end, those three goals proved to be enough to secure the victory. And hey -- "Dahlquist" even sounds a little like "Katniss," right? Well, maybe I'm getting a little carried away on that one. But I can guarantee you this: Charly is a true warrior. It was great to see her have a breakthrough scoring day.

No Doors Fans, eh? Well I guess the L.A. Woman album is pretty old. Early 70's release, IIRC.

Perhaps the more recent Hunger Games reference resonates a bit better?

I'd endoorse it. The Bucks are dangerous when Sauve is healthy.

I had to listen to LA Woman (love that song) and did see many references to the song. Well done and appreciate what you do with the 3 stars and your unbelievable creativity. Keep it up but next time pick a song that doesn’t stay in your head all day! Looks like the Buckeyes rode the storm.

I'd endoorse it.

All of us, after all, are born into this world as Riders On The Storm. You got immediate payback, BTW. That's another Doors song that's tough to shake loose from.

By coincidence, we're on a Snow Day here in Central Ohio. Not all that much snow. But the Storm was partially unexpected, and came in the overnight hours. Timing, as they say, is everything. Anyhow, with apologies to REO Speedwagon, today we're:

Riding The Storm Out!

Ridin' the storm out, waitin' for the thaw out
On a full moon night in the rocky mountain winter
Wine bottle's are low, watching for the snow
Thinking about what have I've been missing in the city

And I'm not missing a thing
Just watchin' the full moon crossing the range
Ridin' the storm out, ridin' the storm out
Ridin' the storm out, ridin' the storm out

Lady beside me and she's there to guide me
She says that alone we've finally found our home
And the wind outside is frightening
But it's kinder than the lightning life in the city
It's a hard enough to live but it gives back of what you give

Oh when I'm not missing a thing
Just watchin' the full moon crossing the range
And I'm ridin' the storm out, ridin' the storm out
Ridin' the storm out, ridin' the storm out, woah, yes I'm baby

Ridin' the storm out, just waitin' for the fall out
On a full moon night in the rocky mountain winter
Wine bottle's are low, just watching for the snow
Thinking about what have I've been missing in the city

Oh, oh, oh and I'm not missing a thing baby
Just watchin' the full moon crossing the range
Ridin' the storm out, ridin' the storm out, oh yeah
Ridin' the storm out, I've been ridin', gonna keep on ridin'
Ooh baby I've been ridin' the storm out, yes I will

Re: WCHA 2017-18 Season

Final Score From Friday, January 19th
Ohio State 3
Minnesota 2

Buckeye Breakthrough
It was a tightly contested affair. In the end, most of the stats were pretty close. But it was also a game of fairly dramatic momentum swings. The Buckeyes controlled much of the first period; the Gophers much of the second. After two, the Gophers led 2-1. That lead looked a little forbidding. Overall, the Buckeyes had played well, but it seemed like it might not be enough. Fortunately in the third, OSU broke on through to the other side.

One odd byproduct of the momentum swings was that all five of the goals were scored at the North End. Rumor has it that the North End Goal Judge was complaining of a sore thumb after the match.:) Most likely that's an embellishment, but it is a good line. What it is true is that the Buckeye Pep Band had the best seats in the house tonight, immediately facing the North Net.

Was this just one fine night to remember, or does the win have larger significance? Impossible to say at this juncture. What we do know is that the Buckeyes have now won the regular season series with the Gophers. That's a nice accomplishment right there. But here's to hoping there are bigger things to come.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

#3 Play of the Game: GWG, Ohio State
Buckeye Stars: Liz Schepers; Julianna Iafallo; Maddy Field
Time: 16:04 (3rd Period)
OK, it's a bit irregular to put the game-winner in the third slot. If you want, you can redo the rankings to suite your taste. Regardless, the GWG was generated by a neutral zone turnover. All three of the Buckeye Stars participated in the forecheck. Maddy completed the turnover near the center circle. Julianna quickly collected the loose puck and fired it ahead to Liz. Schepers took off for the net, and smartly deposited the puck in the lower left hand corner.

#2 Play of the Game: Go Ahead Goal, Minnesota
Gopher Stars: Grace Zumwinkle; Sydney Baldwin; Taylor Wente
Time: 8:24 (2nd Period)
Taylor was a brilliant demon on the draw, winning 16 of 23 opportunities. Fittingly enough, Wente's face-off prowess led directly to goal. In the circle to the left of the Buckeye net, Taylor won the draw cleanly back to Sydney Baldwin on the left point. To my eye, Baldwin was the best Gopher on the ice tonight; controlling the defensive end and earning two assists on offense. This time Sydney fired for the inside of the right post. Meanwhile, Rising Star Grace Zumwinkle broke for the slot. Somehow Grace got just enough of the puck to redirect it into the OSU net. Even in the small, friendly confines of the OSU Ice Rink it was tough to tell exactly what happened. But the great ones get to the right place at the right time, and figure out a way.

#1 Play of the Game: Tying Goal, Ohio State
Buckeye Stars: Charly Dahlquist; Jincy Dunne; Kassidy Sauve
Time: 10:48 (3rd Period)
How many times per game does a goalie tee up the puck for a teammate? One Dozen? More? Kassidy performed this most routine of duties. But on this occasion it earned Sauve an assist. Next came the Smooth Magic of Jincy Dunne. Facing a determined Gopher forechecker, Jincy executed a spin to the inside. The forechecker whiffed. From there, Dunne ziplined a pass to Charly. The determined Dahlquist blasted up the middle, literally splitting the Gopher defense; and ultimately willing the puck into the net. Dahlquist leather from Dunne lace. The play was jaw droppingly, OMG good; and proved to be the turning point of the game.
