WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

After the first period the WCHA Commissioner was interviewed. He said he wants to expand the league and add two west coast teams and then have two 6 team divisions. Anyone know how that would work as far as scheduling?

It would be interesting to know what the Comish thinks "west coast" is geographically.
Anything west of the Rockies he would consider "west coast"? Or does anything west of the Great Lakes qualify?
And what teams does he have in mind?

Probably just means "western." Arizona State we know is one target, and no real idea on the other.

I would think the Alaska teams would be in separate divisions, as would Arizona State (assuming) and UAH. I'd think we'd see four games (2 and 2) against each team within the division for 20, but -- also assuming the number of league games stays at 28 -- playing two games against four of the six teams in the other division. Should make for interesting discussions at the league meetings, that's for sure.

UNLV has been talked about wanting to take the plunge, but I keep hearing that there are a couple or three PAC 12 schools who might be interested as well. I haven't heard specific names, but if I had to make an educated guess take a look at Oregon. That athletic program in Eugene has more money than it knows what to do with thanks to Uncle Phil Knight and Nike, and Portland has a successful WHL team that constantly brings in crowds of 9,000-10,000. College hockey could work in Oregon, in my opinion, and I know there are some other factors at play looking at expanding the sport in the Northwest. I suspect any new entrants are waiting to see how Arizona State does first.

Agree on the Nike thing and what about the Washington Huskies?
Seattle area has WHL hockey and the Huskies have a huge alumni base. The school has the financial ability.
As far as AZ State....they did fine (finer than the nooks would have liked) for a "club" team.
Every Conference is begging them to join.
Every team is begging for an invite to the desert.
I know nothing about scheduling.
That said why does Statman want to split UAA and UA_?
It's our only financially reasonable trip of the season.

If we were split, I don't see why we wouldn't still play four times each season. It would be to help cut back on travel for the rest of the conference, which I get.

UW is another possibility, but I think the issue is the WHL has two teams in the Seattle metro area, Everett Silvertips and Seattle Thunderbirds. Can Seattle sustain two WHL teams plus an NCAA team? Not to mention Seattle keeps showing up on the short list for NHL expansion. All in all, I think Washington state is a tough nut to crack for the NCAA because the WHL has four teams statewide (Seattle, Everett, Spokane, and Tri Cities). I think Oregon is a better bet because the WHL team in Portland is more geographically isolated from the NCAA locations in Corvallis and Eugene. Yeah, Portland State could theoretically do it (Moda Center was built to NHL specs after all), but they're not going to.

Ferris wins the tourney.......just WOW!! If you would have told me 3 weeks ago when Ferris left BG not only swept, but beaten 6-2 in the Saturday game that they would win the tourney and be THE ONLY WCHA rep in the NCAA's........I would have laughed you out of the building.

Crazy what young guys can do when they decide to work hard and get a few bounces to go their way.

Congrats to them!!

Congratulations to Ferris State! For the first time in their 40 year history, they win a league playoff championship! Great job Bob Daniels!

i would guess you'd guarantee 2 games alternating years between home and away for the other division and then have a designated rival, play 2 other teams in your division x4 and one home one away. You could have the Alaskan in separate divisions and still have them be rivals...

I'm not sure it's a good deal for the league for FSU to be playing Quinnipiac.

Pretty sure its not good for the league to have them as the rep at all......like I said, not impressed with them just 3 weeks ago.

This is the system though, and has been for years and years. I always thought the Reg Season champ should get the bid, but they try to make these tourneys interesting by placing that carrot there. Most years the the reg season champ would still be in, WCHA just laid an egg early in the season out of conference.........BG didn't help going 0-4 against mid to bottom tier NCHC schools.....SMH.

It's not that I would want UAA and UAF split, but the teams that would be in the same division with both Alaska schools would object to having to travel up there twice every season, while the teams in the other division would never have to. That likely won't be allowed to happen.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Congrats to Ferris. Hopefully ST. Cloud gets to stay here and UND gets sent east. It's unfair to the Huskies finishing higher than the Fighting Hawks to be denied the closest regional. On the bright side for next year.... The parity is phenomenal in our conference. I love how an early sweep in the season can have lasting impact on March and beyond. The travel isn't ideal, but the friendships are heartfelt and the well wishes to whomever represents us are as well.

I lived near Seattle for 5 years. College hockey at UW would do very well. The Seattle Thunderbirds draw large crowds and the youth programs are very popular. Seattle has been begging for an NHL team for years. They had a team many years ago and want one back. I predict, within 10 years, several of the PAC12 schools will have programs.

I think FSU v SCSU will be in Cinci. You're not moving UND away from St. Paul for attendance reasons. Plus, you get the CCHA match-ups as mentioned in the bracketology blog. Northeastern v UND in St. Paul.

If UND wanted to stay close to home, they should have won the conference tournament. SCSU has earned the shorter trip to the X.

And, congrats to Ferris, and best of luck in the tournament
