Actually, the finances can be there for UNLV, it's more or less the Title IX issue for them.
That and having a much better hockey team than they have now. This is their first season even sniffing the Top 10 in the ACHA. They were not even in the Top 25 as a club program even 3 years ago. They need some sustained growth as a club program to prove to the University they are serious. The AD is considering. They said to the AD they need a $20 million start for scholarships; that is what was proposed. ASU started on $32 million. Penn State was $90 million with the rink included.

If Arizona State and UNLV don't end up joining, does the WCHA possibly look to see if two of the four western most Atlantic Hockey schools join the league?

Is Notre Dame still whining about playing in Hockey East? Could they be eyeing a return to the WCHA?

And speaking of whining, have anyone from Western and Miami finally bought a map and realized where their conference mates are located?

Every club teams needs way better talent to compete at the D-1 level regardless of if they're ranked 1st or 50th in the ACHA. It's irrelevant because once a team goes D-1 and starts offering scholarships, they're recruiting a different type of player anyway.

Sure, from a player perspective. I'm talking about the program organizational aspect. What Penn State did to prepare themselves for D-1 is why they are challenging for a NCAA tournament berth. Penn State was a fixture in the Top 5 of ACHA for many years. Gadowsky coaching the club team to transition, while assembling the Varsity team in advance made a huge difference. Things that ASU and UNLV did not/have not done or put together. ASU rushed themselves in after a donor came forward with the money and pushed them to go D-1 the very next season without planning in advance. They have a much longer road now, because a good chunk of the team this year does not have the type of talent that PSU had in their first year. Granted it's likely going to be a couple years longer process, but it's pain they could have saved themselves had they been organized better when making the leap. Pain that other teams making a leap with in the next 10 years need to think about and make preparations to minimize, like Penn State did.

You don't build a 500 seat arena in SE Michigan with ideas of going Division 1, especially with the way Adrian built the rink in the first place. Add in the moratorium now in place (even though it may not have been in place at the time). Adrian is not going D-1. Adrian was never going to go D-1. Neither the budget, nor the competition, nor the facilities have ever been in place to do so.

To get back on point here, after tonight Ferris has 6 conference games left: 2 each with NMU, BG, and LSSU. A split in those 6, along with a win tonight (shaky proposition there, given FSU's tendency to split most weekends, and especially on the road), would leave us with a 14-10-4 finish. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

It may take 32-34pts for Home Ice this season. Up from the last few seasons.

32 should get it done. NMU's in 5th, and their max is 38 at the moment. And they're at Ferris next weekend.

That was my initial thought, but outside of Tech and Ferris, there is not much resistance there for NMU, with UAH and LSSU on the schedule and how they are currently playing. Just saying that 32 is probable in their case as well. It could be 33 or even 34 to get the home ice spot outright.

If Mankato plays next week the way they played last night, Huntsville will have some points.

This weekend's results do nothing but reaffirm my previously stated opinion that watching the PWR is useless.
The ONLY WCHA team that will make the NCAAs will be the Broadmoor Trophy winner.

if either BGSU or MSU had swept, one would have been in great shape for an auto, but since that didn't happen you're probably right. The strength of the top 3s remaining schedule will make it difficult for the anyone to get an autbid.

After Ferris' win last night in Alaska, we're 4 points ahead of NMU, with NMU having 2 games in hand. The NMU-FSU series in Big Rapids this weekend is bigger than people realize. This one right here could very easily decide where the cutoff is.

Worse thing to happen to college hockey was starting the Big Ten League and making travel for the former CCHA teams a nightmare. Miami and Western and Notre Dame must love their travel distance as well . The old CCHA ,WCHA , were regional leagues with so many schools close enough for fans to make the trips to away games and now, going to away games has become almost impossible for most fans.
