WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I'll never understand the Pairwise. MSU loses by one to #3 St. Cloud, and drops from 19 to 24. The Gophers lose by 2 to #30 something Bemidji, and go from #20 to tied for #17.

The Gophers were #15 coming in to the weekend, so your stat is wrong. And secondly, the other results have lots to do with it - Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn State and others very close to Minnesota all lost as well at some point during the weekend. While the teams around MSU - Michigan Tech, Miami, Clarkson, UMD all won. Making MSU's loss more damaging in the short term - from an RPI perspective.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Is it just me or does it seem strange that MTU gains 25 points for taking 3 points from a superior BELOW team, but that same team gains 43 for sweeping an inferior team?

Other than the way MSU did it against LSSU, I don't think anyone would be more impressed with MSU's sweep of LSSU than MTU's 3 points vs MSU?

Screw it, why wait until the offseason? http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/01/31/re-thinking-the-goal-differential-bonus/

And to answer your question: I screwed up. :( http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/01/31/on-2015-16-games-83-85-91-and-93/

Yeah, you're right. I think the last time I looked at the Gophers it was the poll, not the Pairwise, and I had that number in my head. Mavs were 19 in both.

I don't know why ANY of us who follow WCHA are even slightly interested in PWR this year.
It's completely meaningless.
The only WCHA team that will make the NCAAs will be whoever wins the Broadmoor Trophy.
You can carve that in granite.

Not so fast there guy, there are 5 weekends left in the regular season + playoffs. Lots can happen yet.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Freddie is more than likely right but if 2 of MTU, MSU, BGSU, basically win out except against the other, both could make it (or any of those 3 doing that while a 4th wins the broadmoor).
Edit: All it takes for the pairwise to get more friendly to those three is wins and some faultering by some in the ECAC and B1G. You definitely want the top 3 in NCHC to win out but there is a path.

Discussion started in LSSU thread so I thought I'd move it here...WCHA is eyeing expansion with ASU and other programs not mentioned. They also discuss Robertson wanting to split the 12 team conference along geographical lines.

Looking at the numbers, it doesn't really make sense to have a split conference, they'd just need to go to the pod system that the old CCHA had with 12 and the WCHA did before the big realignment. Everyone could keep their current designated rival and you'd go to both UA_ and UAA once every 5 years, much better than right now (twice in four years.)

So what rumored additional out west team is possible?

Might I propose they call their divisions: Breitenbach and Robertson. Legends and Leaders, if you will. ;)

Really excited at the prospect that ASU might actually be joining the WCHA.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Can't say I'm that thrilled with the idea, but if the Alaska schools end up dropping their programs as part of the continuing cuts up there, it couldn't hurt to pad the league numbers.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

How do you do a geographical grouping with teams in the A$A schools?

Last spot for the playoffs will come down to UAA vs. UA_ on March 4/5th, I'm calling it.

You do a semi compacted MTU, NMU, LSSU, FSU, BGSU, UAH and a gigantic UA_, UAA, ASU, UNLV?, BSU, MSU...wouldn't that be fun travel for everyone in the "west"?

I don't think either of Arizona or UNLV will have a D1 team any time soon. The finances are not there. Though I'm sure they are looking at it.
