WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I'd be more interested to see how this compares with the same number of home dates a year ago and two years ago. I think for instance we will see Huntsville's attendance start to go up once they get just a little more competitive.

Here are the numbers going back a few seasons:
2014-15
1.Mankato - 3980
2.Tech - 3431
3.Bemidji - 3264
4.BG - 2534
5.UA_ - 2437
6.Ferris - 2189
7.NMU - 2188
8.UAA - 2091
9.UAH - 1922
10.LSSU - 1897

2013-14
1.Bemidji - 3562
2.Mankato - 3447
3.Tech - 2885
4.UA_ - 2708
5.UAA - 2526
6.NMU - 2296
7.Ferris - 2037
8.BG - 2022
9.UAH - 2008
10.LSSU - 1809

2012-13 (even though the teams were split across 2 leagues plus 1 independent)
1.Mankato - 3655
2.Bemidji - 3255
3.Tech - 3078
4.NMU - 2845
5.UA_ - 2820
6.UAA - 2729
7.BG - 2518
8.Ferris - 2128
9.LSSU - 2044
10.UAH - 1983*

Source-USCHO
*UAH listed as only playing 5 home games this season, which has a tendency to throw off averages.

Yeah, and one of those games, we did a buyout and packed 5000+ in the seats.

We've been around that number for a while. We do better in spring semester when BAMA and AUBURN aren't playing. The one year we got stuck against the Iron Bowl wasn't pretty. It's getting a tick better, but we need wins before it really starts to happen. That first game against Fairbanks to start 2016 was nice, and then we gave up five unanswered goals.

This season we also had 2/3 of our home schedule in the first half, which is not optimal. But also, at the end of the day, we have to win more and market better.

selling ads for the radio broadcast and the tv time outs would not seem to me to cost much money and would bring big returns. Also do you run ads on the campus station?

Nice to see Tech in the top three, but I would be willing to bet if you went back 5 or 10 years, Tech would be near the bottom. For those teams in the bottom half now, Tech is a good example that winning a few games can really change attendance.

I've dropped some serious coin over the years to only win two jerseys.
The odds will be more in your favor if you're holding all the cards. ;)
I can't remember how NMU does them, but if NMU runs them like UAA with a bottomless pile of tickets, that strategy won't really work.

We'd need an actual radio broadcast (all we have is WCHA.tv). The campus station isn't really a campus station -- it's a public radio station that happens to be on campus. So...yeah.

There is no way to have anything above an LPFM station in our market given our proximity to Nashville, Birmingham, and Atlanta. If you get to a height where the Tennessee Valley could hear you —*or anything outside of the core of Huntsville (nothing in Madison, Decatur, Athens, etc.), you can't get a signal. There was a chance to get one, but WAY-FM got a repeater in place, as if soccer moms seeking family-friendly Crappy Christian Music need to listen to the radio.

There has been radio coverage in the past, but it's all been on local stations, always FM, and never on the Internet. The Penalty Box Radio guys have talked about simulcasting the feed on their end, but ... yeah.

For $10 a month you can stream on MixLr.com. Just share the player link with people who want to listen online and skip the silliness of the FCC.

Having spoken with two people who work(ed) for radio stations, there is not much money in radio these days.

Having seen the WCHA.tv feed coming out of the VBC, they really don't have the bandwidth to burn.

In my silly ranking that perhaps no one but me cares about, Tech and UAA were the big winners last week, and the rankings feel that the race really has tightened to a three-headed monster: http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/01/21/week-16-below/

Hooray for the one-bid 2015-16 WCHA, where mediocrity is king and overtime is almost mandatory.

I'll have predictions for UAA @ BGSU later, but from what I plinked around at overnight, it's good news for BG.

There is still plenty of time for 2 WCHA teams to find their way into the top 16, especially with still a handful of NC games left to boost our OOC record. Its unlikely but I'd put 2 WCHA teams into the NCAA tournament at about 25% right now.

Is there time? Yes, there is, but the league has to go pretty well spotless in OOC play, and that hasn't happened this year. If that happens, and the best team by PWR doesn't win the Final Five, we might be a two-bid league. I wouldn't put that at 25%.

I can see Minnesota State winning the NSC and the WCHA regular season, yet failing to win the WCHA tournament and still getting in and put that at 25%.

Someone who has more fun with the Pairwise than me (i.e., you) could predict the first half of that. I could take a shot at the second half.

Speaking of predictions, an estimate of the UAA-BGSU series that starts tonight: http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/0...prediction-alaska-anchorage-at-bowling-green/

Week 17 BELOW: http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/01/27/2015-16-week-17-below-ratings/

I keep thinking that the race for 4th is as interesting as the race for 1st. 1/2 will get cupcakes (let's be honest, none of LSSU-UAF-UAA-UAH is going to beat Mankato or BG in a three-game series), but that Bemidji-Ferris-Northern cohort could provide fits for anyone and get hot at the right time. It's realistic that, say, Northern Michigan is the WCHA's lone representative in the NCAA tournament.

I haven't crunched the numbers real in depth, but I don't think Bemidji will get home ice this year. Too many things need to happen and one of them was that they needed more than one point last week against Ferris with all the games in hand everyone has on them.

siouxsports.com has their what if calculators up and running now if you want to fiddle with the rest of the WCHA schedule.

In other news, if everything goes well this morning, Tech Hockey Guide will be relaunching and along with that, there will be a new THG Web Media Poll. Expect some links to content later today!
