WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

As absolutely awful as UAH has been in the last two months, this weekend at NoDak was a welcome sight. Yes, the Fn Hawks didn't have two of their top players. So? WE didn't have Brennan Saulnier on Saturday. ;) Carmine was razor sharp (save for the last goal, which I think that he wanted back), and those were two one-goal games up until 1:52 left in the second match when the green guys got an ENG and broke things open a bit. I honestly expected this to be a repeat of the 16-4 weekend at Tech last year.

Your offense needs to get on track again, although to be fair (this weekend) NoDak has an excellent group of D-men. They won't normally give you a lot of opportunities.

We've got to stop being a one-line team. Our lone goal was a fluke: Buri had skated it in hard through the zone and was curling around the RW circle to make a centering pass and then bust it around the net to make it back to the left point. It's a play the the makes 1-3x a game because he has great north-south speed and does a decent job of protecting the puck despite being that big. It just deflected off of a NoDak skate. Johnson didn't have the time to react.

enjoyed hearing O Canada tonight from Taffy Abel.
as long as teams are loaded with Canadians, should be played for every WCHA game.

I agree with this. I always liked that LSSU plays both anthems, and I wish more WCHA teams would take the extra couple of minutes to do the same.

I have regularly argued for it at UAH and have regularly been argued down.

Here's a thought from the broadcast end. How should the broadcast handle that five minutes or so? Air both anthems as picked up by the crowd mic? A five minute commercial break? And don't forget, if the home guy can some have the ability to make a quality sound connection to his broadcast, be it played by band, organ or vocalist, such consideration needs to be provided to the visitor as well. For those who have a well timed, well structured pregame show, LSSU throws a bit of a monkey wrench in the broadcast works. And if the broadcast position is close to the fans, such as Bowling Green, Ferris, Fairbanks, LSSU, NMU, Mankato and Anchorage, communicating with your studio while an anthem is playing is going to draw you some dirty looks and a few SHHHHs from nearby patrons.

play a prerecorded interview? It's not rocket science...

I think that Shirtless has it right. I don't think that showing the anthems is a requirement (although I 1) really don't like tSSB and 2) am not the biggest fan of anthems at games anyway ... but if you're doing one ...), so I think that you do a pre-recorded bit. That's hard to do at the VBC given the ... press box.

It's easier to restructure your show if it is standard practice across the league. And if the anthem format is the same from rink to rink. And if you are notified ahead of time. There are a lot of variables, length of interview, amount of time each anthem takes, are oth anthems done quickly, back to back by the same performer? Is there a minute, minute and a half between...and again, enjoy the SHHHHs and dirty looks from nearby fans while trying to communicate through the headset or via cell phone to your studio. It's difficult at best no matter what route you take.

Here is my basic format, open/welcome, opposing coach, our coach, WCHA tonight, lineups, with a beak after each segment leading to the drop of the puck. Putting the variably timed interviews early in the pregame allows adjustment on the fly with the other live segments as we move toward face off. Anthem time for just the US anthem time rarely varies by more than 30 seconds at most. Throw in a second anthem and the time in between the two and that variable becomes much greater.

Actually it's not bad at VBC since you are not in the middle of fans and have the luxury of being able to talk to the studio a bit more freely...to coordinate timing.

The other problem here is that not every broadcast is set up the same way. You're radio-focused, which means that you have a different setup. The league would have to standardize on a lot more than anthems. Alas ...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Methinks the league has more important issues to be concerned with....more important that which national anthems ought to be played, or who wears what color.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Yeah, like training officials on what is a good goal and what isn't.

I'll settle for calling obstruction and interference, which would mean that any individual goal is worth a little bit less...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I'd just like whatever they call to be consistent.

That helps, for one, but man, we so need to open up things in the league. I don't know what you can draw from the Bemidji scores or Friday night in Huntsville, but then you look at the games in Mankato and the Soo and, well ...

GFM

Your absolutely right on that. As disgusting as it is for fans or game callers like you I can't really imagine what goes through the players and coaches minds. I am talking about the refs looking right at the play and not calling a infraction that they just called twice to put your team down two men.
They are human and can miss infractions but when you see them looking right at the play it makes you wonder if they even have a clue.
