WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I'm sure he wasn't very happy about flying all the way to Minnesota to play a single game. I wouldn't be.

Nope, he wasnt. But NCAA rule provide a remedy for this type of situation. It was called a no-contest because it was the right thing to do based on the rules.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I bought tickets for the final five this weekend, due to the valentines day special. The price for 1 ticket was 54 instead of what, 68. but the total bill after fees and taxes was 74.50. So I paid 20 dollars in fees. Seems like an awful lot to me. I would have been better off just walking up.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Haha, we plan on it...still not a fan of the QWB and the number of opportunities that the NCHC is getting. MTU is currently extremely dependent on Michigan and UMD for their bonus, adding MSU to the list would be good, so would BSU finding a way into the top 20. I need to ask someone more in tune with the PWR but what let's say 2 teams have played 4 times already and split. What if Team A moves up in the pwr because of QWB over the other in their 2 wins, and because of that bump the other team moves up a spot, do they again adjust Team A for the new value of QWB? If things get really clustered like they are right now that compounding of the NCHC teams can really change the pwr.

It seems like an infinite loop....I wonder if anyone at the NCAA ever even considered it.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Again, I'm not questioning the decision not to play. But why it was a cancellation instead of a forfeit is still a little confusing, if Princeton was ok to play.

Here's the NCAA guideline

“No Contest” Declaration
There is no forfeit of a contest until all participating teams are present and the referee or other appropriate
contest official has assumed jurisdiction in accordance with the applicable playing rules. When a team
does not appear (e.g., due to weather conditions, accidents, breakdown of vehicles, illness or catastrophic
circumstances, shortage of players), a forfeit is not recorded unless the rules of the sport provide that
option.

FWIW, MSU would still be first in PWR with a tie in that game, second behind North Dakota with a loss.

Definately liking this new league. Still some bugs to be worked out, but by and large I have thoroughly enjoyed rooting for the WCHA.

Relaying some discussion from the UAA thread, neither of us Alaska schools fanbases are entirely confident at the continued futures of our programs...

I saw that but didn't ask...as an uninformed minnesotan, what happened? I thought alaska was bursting with oil money.

Used to be that way however in our infinite wisdom we have now decided to pay the oil companies to pump "our" oil.
And no that's not a joke. Well it is but the jokes on us.

And to go with the tax decreases noted above, production has sharply declined as well

Well in the current tax structure the sharp decline is a good thing.
We won't have to pay them as much.
I'm pretty sure the folks we send to Juneau are more than capable of dreaming up a way to pay them more.
It behooves their reelection chances.

Well, technically we are bursting with oil money. The Permanent Fund (the state's savings account) currently has about $52 billion in it. Politically, however, it's untouchable. We may hate the government up here but by God don't take away our annual check from the government.

And since no politician wants to talk about tapping the PF with a 10 foot pole for fear of not getting re-elected, here we are with our current budget crisis, which is likely to have a major trickle down effect on the UA system.

All of this plus the oil tax fiasco as mentioned by Seawolf Fan and Jimjamesak is a shining example of what happens when oil companies run your state legislature.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Here is how the rest of the WCHA season is scheduled out and I broke them out by "tiers". I think it is going to be another fun ride to that last Saturday night, much like last year!

Mankato (40 points): bye, home with Tech, at Bemidji
Michigan Tech (39): bye, at Mankato, home and home with Northern Michigan
-----
Bowling Green (31): home with Northern Michigan, at Anchorage, home with Huntsville
-----
Alaska (not eligible for playoffs): bye, at Huntsville, at Anchorage
-----
Bemidji (20): home with Anchorage, at Ferris, home with Mankato
Northern Michigan (20): at Bowling Green, home with Lake State, home and home with Tech
Ferris State (18): at Huntsville, home with Bemidji, at Lake Superior State
----
Alabama-Huntsville (15): home with Ferris, home with Alaska, at Bowling Green
Lake Superior State (13): bye, at Northern Michigan, home with Ferris
Alaska-Anchorage (10): at Bemidji State, home with Bowling Green, home with Fairbanks

And here is how I get the season playing out from the "What If" Calculator over on SiouxSports:

http://siouxsports.com/hockey/whatif/index.php?confid=9

MSU-Mankato 28 44
Michigan Tech 28 44
Bowling Green 28 40
Alaska 28 30
Bemidji State 28 28
Ferris State 28 26
Northern Michigan 28 23
Alabama-Huntsville 28 19
Lake Superior 28 15
Alaska Anchorage 28 11

Is anyone on here in the know enough to speculate on how the league is doing financially?

I think this is a real important year and the results will influence decisions made in the spring about realignment. So this is a pitch to help support the league if you can. Go to the final five, buy the TV games and let's put our money where our mouth is. We want this league to succeed it seems to me.

I doubt anyone will have a good idea until after the F5. I've heard last season was a financial dud due in part to being in Grand Rapids, but that wasn't entirely unexpected.

The geography of the league will make attendance an issue no matter where it's located. We went to GR last year because it was a fairly easy drive to get there. Not so much so, this year. At a minimum it's a 10.5 hour drive from BG. That makes it difficult to get there for the first game on Friday unless we leave at an ungodly hour. Our schedules don't allow for many options (like getting there a day early).

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

The WHL is asking the Washington state legislature to pass legislation exempting the league from some labor laws.
If they don't get the legislation they seek they say the teams will have to abandon the state.

Edit: may not have said that correctly.
While Washington’s four teams in the Western Hockey League are investigated for child labor practices, the state Legislature is considering a league request to exempt amateur athletes from state labor laws.
In a hearing before the Washington state Senate’s Commerce and Labor Committee Wednesday, officials from the state’s WHL teams and the league office said the Seattle Thunderbirds, Spokane Chiefs, Tri-City Americans and Everett Silvertips might have to leave or shut down if state law isn’t changed to consider amateur athletes non-employees.

The state’s Labor and Industry department has been investigating all four teams since a complaint was filed in 2013 over working conditions for their players, who range in age from 16 to 20 years old.

“If the bill is not passed, it could negatively impact our ability to operate and would force us to move or not operate in the state,” Silvertips general manager Garry Davidson told the Senate committee.

2nd edit: Whose definition of "amateur athletes" ?
