WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Soooo...I'm just going to assume we are the only team in the country to go 2-1-1 against Mankato this year.

What a way to close out home ice for the year. Couldn't be happier for our program and our seniors.

Welp, your playoff teams are set. I'm embarrassed to be a UAA fan right now. Our program is a joke.

First winless stretch for the Mavericks, injuries and illness play a key factor in the weekend. Eliminates a 4th line for them!

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Something is bugging me, and I knew it would as the season wound down.

Princeton is one of the lowest ranked teams in the PairWise. A loss or tie at home against a team that low would be a killer in your RPI and probably come back to haunt you when the tournament field is being set.

When they were allowed to cancel a game against the Tigers, Minnesota State was able to dodge this bullet. They apparently lost two players from the lineup for the Saturday night game at Alaska due to illness (which was the reason for the cancellation). I'm wondering what the PairWise would look like had they played that game. Of course it's very likely they would have won anyway, but it's an interesting little footnote to consider.

And I'm not saying they didn't do the right thing for the safety of the players by cancelling the game. At that moment you'd have no way of predicting that it would affect anything at the end of the season, and that certainly wouldn't have played any part in the decision.

But on the other hand, if you're not prepared to play a game and the other team is, why isn't that a forfeit?

I was under the impression that it was players on both teams that were sick. And even if it weren't the case, whether or not they play that game is completely up to those 2 teams, it is non-conference, if they don't want to play, for any reason, they don't have to play, as long as both teams agree.

This was 11 dudes with the flu. They literally couldn't dress more than 12 guys at the time. With a full lineup Pricneton was ran out of the building Friday. Not worth worrying about, really.

Speaking of illness. What happened up in Alaska? Sounds like you guys need some better docs over there...

Again, I'm not questioning the decision not to play. But why it was a cancellation instead of a forfeit is still a little confusing, if Princeton was ok to play.

If as Mav 14 says it was 11 of the guys at once it sounds more to me like food poisoning than the flu.
The flu takes them down more like dominos and goes through a team more slowly.
Food poisoning hits everyone who ate the bad food at the same time.
They eat as a team but not all team members eat the same thing so some are spared.
Perhaps only a dozen have the side of potato salad???
The others had fries???
Please don't ask to see my Dr. certificate.

I'm just basing this off of what Hastings said, but he said there was no way it could have been food poisoning due to how long it lasted. You're right that it starts quickly, but it generally ends quickly as well. It lasted over the course the week. I don't have any direct knowledge, just what was said. Around that same time, my whole family got a bug as well. I can tell you all 5 of us got hit within 2 days. It's possible, but who knows.

As far as why it wasn't a forfeit, the NCAA has a couple of very specific possibilities as to be listed as a no-contest rather than a foreit. One of those is a sickness that makes it impossible to play the game. This was one of those and the NCAA agreed.

.

I can confirm that it was not food poisoning. I don't need to get into specifics, but I generally get good inside information.

For Princeton, I traveled up to Kato, picked up my daughter, and went to the Friday game. She texted me at 5:30 the next morning, and said she needed to go to the doctor. Coincidentally (or not), that was also the time Hastings started hearing from the players. She was barely functioning by noon. By Sunday, I was sick, and it was the flu. I missed my first day of work in 10 years. It was definitely not food poisoning. I can't speak for what happened in Alaska, but since Knutson stayed home and was sick as well, food poisoning seems unlikely in that case also.

Two guys were run and couldn't go. One was able to play on Saturday. Four guys were deemed too ill to play Friday night by the middle of the second period. None of them dressed Saturday. One forward who would've been on the trip didn't make it due to illness. Saturday's lineup had only 11 forwards on the line chart, two of whom are defenseman without regular minutes. I can't confirm whether or not it was food poisoning yet.;) I can confirm it's been a really bad winter for illness in Southern MN, with the local schools seeing extremely high numbers of students missing class, etc. The local high school hockey teams each have had stretches where large parts of their rosters were ill as well. I'm not sure what the deal is this year, but a lot of people are getting sick this year, despite the lack of snow and prolonged periods of extreme cold.

If you're so worried about the Pairwise, why don't the Huskies just win a couple games against the Mavericks this time?

Haha, we plan on it...still not a fan of the QWB and the number of opportunities that the NCHC is getting. MTU is currently extremely dependent on Michigan and UMD for their bonus, adding MSU to the list would be good, so would BSU finding a way into the top 20. I need to ask someone more in tune with the PWR but what let's say 2 teams have played 4 times already and split. What if Team A moves up in the pwr because of QWB over the other in their 2 wins, and because of that bump the other team moves up a spot, do they again adjust Team A for the new value of QWB? If things get really clustered like they are right now that compounding of the NCHC teams can really change the pwr.
