WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I was the lone media member who voted Max McHugh in the preseason Newcomer of the Year voting, and I feel pretty vindicated ... so far.

Wow MTU Fans, you are really getting out the vote for the Hobey Baker! Both players have exceeded 40k votes and the next closest at something like 12K.

Speaking of that, who in the league has stood out for POY and ROY?

Kero has some pretty great numbers and leads in 5 categories for POY. Chris Nell has only played in 7 games for BG but amazing stats! CJ Franklin leads all skaters in points.

I'm proud of Tech's ability to stuff the ballot box.

Shutting out UAH twice on 42 SOG total isn't very impressive.

Neither was McHugh this weekend. I watched for him, but he was fairly nonexistent.

I like Bitzer's body of work over the year (5-5-1) and I have a feeling he may have just passed Andrew Walsh as the number one goalie. First game of his collegiate career was a 5-1 victory at North Dakota. Also has wins against Alaska (6-1), Northern (4-2) and the two against UAH (4-0 each). Plus he has a tie with Northern thrown in there. The losses were at Minnesota (5-2), at Mankato (6-3), with Tech (2-1), at Bowling Green (2-1) and with St. Cloud (6-3).

I am sure we could all make arguments for our favorites.

Yeah, Max had a bad weekend — but then, most every Charger did.

overall I agree too, not sure Ferris really belongs that high but not sure how to shuffle things...

He had Ferris much lower (below UAH!) last week, which I thought then was a bit of an overreaction. In some ways, I don't guess that it matters where you rank Alaska. This makes 5-7 be the goalie-driven teams (if you have Bemidji rated above Northern, which I don't). UAH would clearly be #7 there considering the scoring differential, and then the Ferris offense slightly out-ticks the Northern one. [See http://collegehockeystats.net/1415/overallstats/wcham for details, but it's currently 2.43 for Ferris to 2.20 for Northern.]

To do anything much fancier than that requires some analysis of GF/GA trends based on relative competition, etc. I mean, it's telling that Bitzer's shutouts are against UAH, yeah? He's good, but is he that good?

UAH has been shut out by BG's Nell (20 SOG), LSSU's Defiel (26), Alaska's Jones (14), and twice by that dirty Beaver (18 and 24). UAH has been outshot 604-320 in conference play, so those five shutouts come on 102 of those shots, or just 32% of all Charger shots on net (and 20.4 SOG/GM). Is that unusual? Well, UAH averages exactly 20.0 SOGF/GM, so it's not as if the teams getting shutouts are just strangling the UAH offense. But Defiel isn't any great shakes so far (53 GA to Bitzer's 13), and Jones's GAA/SV% are pretty pedestrian overall and toward the bad end of the WCHA.

But what about Bitzer? His eight WCHA starts are against v Alaska (1 GA on 27 SOG in the beginning of UAF's swoon after their hot start), @ Mankato (5 GA on 32 SOG), v Tech (2 GA on 22SOG), @ BG (2 GA on 24 SOG), v NMU (2 GA on 22 SOG, then 1 GA on 20 SOG) when Dahlström was out, then the 18- and 24-SV shutouts against UAH. Do I view these stats with Bemidji-hating eyes? Yes. The Tech and BG starts are good for any goalie.

I think that it's easier to be hot for short periods than for the whole season, and yes, this comment could be applied to Carmine Guerriero.

I hate Bemidji.

You know when a super dumb question pops in your head?. I don't know why I thought of this but, do the Alaska schools have to pay half the freight for each other? Is the question that came to mind when I read that they played each other this weekend!

Pretty big weekend of action! I am hoping for at least 3 points at Ferris for the Mavs and a split in the BG MTU series.

...do the Alaska schools have to pay half the freight for each other?

I could be mistaken, but I believe Anchorage is so far removed from the real Alaska that they get an exemption when they travel to Fairbanks to play. UAF tried to get a cost sharing arrangement but UAA wouldn’t go for it. UAA was afraid Coach Ferguson would cost them two plane tickets and UAF would get a freebie for Coach Thomas as long as he sat on one of his players laps.

Go Nooks!
