WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Mention this in the NCHC thread and they'll jump right down your throat. Trust me, I've done it. :D Realignment makes sense no matter how you slice it. Travel isn't cheap and the more you can regionalize a league, the better off the programs are.

Bruce Ciskie already threw a hissy fit on Twitter.

FWIW, the B1G fans hate the current alignment. Especially the ones from the old CCHA. It really wouldn't be that bad except that they (except for OSU), along with Notre Dame seem to believe that 2 for 1 deals are fair when setting up schedules, as if they're doing us a favor. Bergeron won't have anything to do with them. Not to mention, playing them would play havoc on our SOS this year.:D

And that's exactly what we little schools need to do. 2 for 1? **** off. Good luck with filling your OOC games that you need a ton of.

http://uahhockey.com/blog/2014/12/10/college-hockey-isnt-dead-or-dying-its-just-changing/ revises and extends my "we haven't had time to form rivalries" point. I can't really believe that's Dan's premise for arguing the change when there are so many better ones to be made.

At the end of that piece, I posited that an interlock would be helpful. I've tried to do that once before, but two 10-team leagues are a darn sight easier to interlock than an 8-team and a 10-team (trust me, I spent four or five hours on it last summer).

Not sure how you leave MTU-NMU out of the hate each other list there ;)

I had another bit about how the hot rivalries were in Michigan and Alaska, but I cut it for length (believe it or not, that piece was longer).

Fair enough, I'd have kept reading ;) It was good read and length wasn't an issue for me.

I just saw that. Holy ****, Bruce Ciskie is a useless pile of dog ****. He's like college hockey's Hawk Harrelson.

He just said he prefers St Cloud in the NCHC over Notre Dame because he is "anti-plane" but he can't understand why people like Dan Myers and myself hate the change because we traded all these driveable road games for flights. He claims I can't say that because I'm not part of the team.

The guy is really a piece of work. The whole sport would be better off if he got hooked on basketball, or tennis or something a long ways away from the hockey world.

This was a great exchange:
@TBraunTHG - I don't feel as negative as @1DanMyers about the West dying but I'm passionate about #mtuhky
@BruceCiskie - Then be happy. They're having a great season so far.
@puckato - He’d love to but the NCHC keeps taking credit for their success :)

Yes, I had to explain to others around why I laughed out loud.

I get ****ed when they, the Nacho circle-jerkers, say that the reason Tech, Mankato, Bowling Green are having success is because they're in an inferior league. No, that is not the case, you stupid ****s. Tech and Mankato would be top 5 teams in the old WCHA, and BGSU would be a top 3 team in the old CCHA.

Ryan Satkowiak is an idiot who thinks he knows way more than he really does. I despise his writing style and his propensity for inserting little quips that he thinks are funny but are simply stupid. Don't judge us based him since there aren't too many of us here that like him.
Dajon is Dajon. Seriously, he's a good kid but his mouth has gotten him into trouble with the coach in the past. He really shouldn't be saying anything about other teams given our recent past....
Remind me again who Ryan Sat...however it's spelled is. The name doesn't ring a bell.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I think Dan's blog post is interesting but I don't think we're going to see any significant realignment. NCHC may try to steal a team or two from the WCHA for political reasons but the toothpaste is out of the tube. The NCHC is here to stay because hockey has become a revenue generating sport for larger schools. TV visibility and name recognition outweigh travel, rivalries or any concerns of hardcore fans when it comes to revenue. Witness the attendance numbers at the B1G tourney vs. the NCHC tourney vs. the WCHA tourney last year. http://www.uscho.com/2014/03/25/int...urnament-down-40-percent-from-a-year-earlier/
NCHC filled slightly more seats than B1G, while WCHA, as expected, nearly dropped off the map. B1G is happy with revenue/attendance and NCHC is happy with revenue/attendance. The only ones not happy are some WCHA schools and the hardcore college hockey fans who miss the old days. I see no market driven reason for any realignment other than Kato and BGSU going to NCHC when and if NCHC thinks they will bring enough fanbase with them. If the trend continues (and I think it will because football and basketball have gone that way) college hockey conference alignment will be driven by market-share, with leagues stratified by name recognition and fanbase size. That's what the 2013 realignment was all about and it brought college hockey in line with other major college sports by favoring market commonalities over regional and historical commonalities. As an MTU fan, I'm not happy about it and I don't think it was good for college hockey, but I'm not naive enough to think that we're ever going to return to a conference paradigm based on the old regional rivalries.
