WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

But the NCHC wasn't based on geographic sensibility.

And how is that working out for them?

Well, until the tax returns are made public, they claim it's going well. But I'm also pretty sure they hired Baghdad Bob as a PR consultant.

Can anyone refresh my memory on the play-up rules/moratorium for D2 schools wanting D1 hockey? Are they still allowed to declare one sport as a play up or not? If not, is that holding back a lot of programs from making the jump?

On the plus side at least Baghdad Bob understands the need for timeliness of information and faux pas of all caps when tweeting.

The WCHA beat the NCHC in tweeting congratulations to the Sun Devils, and they even used proper capitalization!

They really need more than 32 million if you ask me, given the expenses involved in getting going, and I question the numbers they are using.

I agree, especially since they have no clue which women's sport they'll add to offset Title IX. You have to consider scholarships, travel, hiring coaches, possibly building a new facility or playing surface, etc. Whatever they do add probably won't be competitive, as its only purpose to the athletics department is to exist. ASU donors will not be happy with a program created solely to drain cash.

You never know. ASU adds another travel orphan to the group out west, at least for the time being. If conferences were restructured again into something that made more sense geographically, it would be easier for each conference to take one Alaska school and either UAH or ASU while the other conference takes the other two.

Well, if you have two warm-weather schools, do you want to play the big name that everyone knows about that has lots of money or the school that hardly anyone knows exists that's a D2 school in all other respects?

As others alluded to, it sounds like ASU is counting on some additional western/Pac12 schools to make the leap.

This is completely baseless and my own opinion, but keep an eye on Oregon. Uncle Phil Knight and Nike have dumped an insane amount of money into that school, and there is a pretty strong base of hockey fans in the state. Portland has been trying to get NHL for years, and the WHL Portland Winterhawks routinely pull big crowds at Memorial Coliseum and the Moda Center. Don't underestimate UO's willingness to start up something at the drop of a hat. They re-started NCAA baseball in 2007 to spite Oregon State after OSU won a couple of national titles, tossing out a longstanding gentlemens agreement between the two schools to let UO have track and field and OSU have baseball.

That's why I added 'for the time being'. Nobody expects ASU to be a long-term conference member regardless of where they end up.

Oregon's fairly new, $230M Matthew Knight Arena does apparently have ice making capabilities. It would probably seat around 12k for puck. I'm not sure about any connection to Portland, since it's over 100 miles away, unless the Dub also started a squad...be a good spot for a yearly rivalry game.

Yeah, these are the problems that everyone has trying to start a program outside of the normal footprint. (I still don't fully understand how we pulled off the jump to varsity hockey.) UAHstatman has a piece together about the potential of Alabama trying to start a team, and it's a good one. The biggest problem to me is that the SEC teams would all want to jump together. ASU having a big donor to do this makes it awesome and gives us a chance for an amazing western expansion, but you're not going to see a Southern expansion anytime soon. Kennesaw tried to make the jump and failed. I think that the only two schools to give this a shot are Georgia and Georgia Tech, but the Thrashers leaving for the 'Peg really hurt those chances.

They have publicly said its either gonna be women's rowing or lacrosse.
