Wacky Bloomberg

Re: Wacky Bloomberg

When you write about wacky Bloomberg, what about the nut cases that are vying to replace him??

I shudder to think what might happen if one of the blatant panderers becomes mayor afterward.

You have to give Bloomberg great credit for reducing crime and keeping the city safe. 16 terrorist attacks thwarted since 9-11, for example. I really admire his unapologetic stand on keeping minority communities safe from random gun violence: he is forthright and won't back down which is a really good thing.

About 90% of the victims of gun violence in NYC are minorities, many of them children or teens who just happened to be there when gang members started shooting at each other. Several years ago they started a program called "stop - question - frisk" to get illegal guns out of the hands of gang members before they were used in shootings. The minority community is strongly behind this effort overall, yet for some bizarre reason the NY Times wants to stop it. Naturally the NYCLU is against it, why should they care how many children are killed if they can garner publicity?

You would expect the police to target people who are likely to be carrying guns, i.e., gang members. The NYCLU seems to think that for every gang member with something heavy in his coat pocket making it sag who is questioned, some granny with a shopping cart should also be questioned. Gee, so targeting known members of a criminal enterprise for attention is a problem? why are the police hassling criminals?

similar with their outreach to the Muslim community. The police and Muslims are working together in a voluntary way, the Muslims know that Islamists are perverting Islam and Islamists kill as many Muslims as anyone else; the Muslims generally want to work with the police to protect everyone from Islamists. yet a few people are making a big deal of this outreach as if it were a bad thing. "we want to keep all people, including Muslims, safe. Muslims know better than anyone who is a dangerous Islamist and who is a peaceful believer and can alert us to the danger." yet people have a problem with this too?

Bloomberg is firm, impassioned, and unapologetic for these measures, which obviously have been quite successful when measured by results. Yet the panderer parade wants to criticize them in a scramble to see who can be the looniest? ych.

Re: Wacky Bloomberg

The mayor that did the crackdown on crime and violence was Giuliani. Bloomberg didn't do much there, just more of the same. This is starting to sound like some of those lefties that say BHO is the cream of the crop when it comes to homeland security, despite the fact that the difference between him and GWB in terms of flat policy is nil. The only thing fairly new that Bloomberg has to his credit is his nanny state.

Re: Wacky Bloomberg

I have to agree with FF about the crop of contenders to replace Bloomberg. My personal favorite is Sal Albanese, who has at least distinguished himself from the crowd through his reasonable stance on transportation safety, but unfortunately I don't think he's got the clout to have any kind of shot in the primary against the bigger names like Quinn and De Blasio and Liu.

Seriously? You don't have issues with a blatant disregard of the Fourth Amendment?

Re: Wacky Bloomberg

You mean the Constitution applies to EVERYBODY?!?!?!

How inconvenient

Re: Wacky Bloomberg

I am not looking forward to the bicycle sharing program at all. They put out the racks for the bike share program and once the bikes are put in them, they are going to take up a lot of room and really clog up the streets even more. Supposedly the things are real heavy and clunky too. I'll bet they'll be lots of fun during the rain.

Clearly you are unaware of the details of what is going on if that is your reaction. "Unreasonable" being the key word. If you merely picked people based solely on skin color alone, that definitely would be a problem. That is not at all what is happening. There is a huge difference between known gang members and known honor students.

Nonsense! Bike share is going to be fantastic here, just like it has been in comparable cities like Boston and DC and London and elsewhere. The streets are clogged because there are too many drivers (cars being the actual safety hazard to New Yorkers, despite what City Council blathering about delivery cyclists would have you believe), not because there are too many cyclists.

Edit to add: Sorry, "Nonsense!" was probably not the right way to voice my disagreement. :o

One thing that is troublesome with NYC, though, is that not only are bike lanes clogged, but NYPD will ticket bicyclists for not being in the bike lane, even if the lane is blocked.

Yeah, I agree, it's pretty asinine.

I get it. The Fourth Amendment doesn't apply to known gang members. I'm making a list, is there anyone else it doesn't apply to?

Since you are obviously so much smarter than anyone else, perhaps you can explain the distinction between a "reasonable" search and one that is not "reasonable" then?

If a police officer sees the outline of a gun in someone's pocket, is it "reasonable" to stop and ask that person "what are you doing with that gun in your pocket?"

If that is not "reasonable" please explain why. if it is "reasonable" then please explain what the fuss is about.

Thanks.
