Vermont 2023/24: Stuck in the Wieds

Happy to see Mangbo get some playing time and Carriere get some rest.

All three teams tied at 23 points lost big to the top three. UVM still has a game in hand. Now, 33 points mathematically clinches 1st round home ice. If UVM beats UConn in regulation, UVM would clinch with 31 points. UVM needs at least 24 points for a chance at 1st round home ice. At least 26 points is needed for 7th. 36 points clinches 7th.

If the top 3 keep winning in regulation, UVM's chances for 8th will boil down to the game at UConn.

Doesn’t matter, we’re going nowhere. But we got Wiedler locked in for four years. I actually think he’s done a pretty good job under the circumstances, but why not do a one or two year contract before deciding if he’s the real deal? The four year deal is such a UVM thing to do. Just take the easiest path.

Went to the BC game last night. Too bad the Cats didn’t show up. If BC had their A game, it would have been 7-0 in the first period. Carrierre was huge. Cats played scared, played defensively. To me, that’s coaching. let’s hope he’s better at recruiting.

I think 4-year deals are minimum in college sports or you'll have other programs negatively recruit against the program by saying it's unstable and there is no guarantee that your coach will remain there if you commit. And that's even considering that guys are committing well before their freshman season. I hate the whole thing but it is what it is.

Yeah, that’s a good point. BTW, you guys are so good it’s ridiculous. Give you any open ice and there’s gonna be a puck in the back of the net. Hope we can actually compete some tonight.

BC and BU clinched the top two spots. Ignoring the very remote possibility of finishing higher than 7th, if UVM survives the first round, they would play at BC or BU in the quarterfinal unless they finished 9th or better and all of the teams ahead of them were upset in the first round.

UConn lost again, but Northeastern grabbed three points at Maine. Now it will take at least 25 points to get first round home ice. 31 points clinches first round home ice. If UVM gets 2 or 3 points in their UConn game, 30 points would clinch a first round home ice spot.
If we assume Merrimack won't get at least 7 points out of 9 in 2 games vs. Providence and 1 game vs. BC and Lowell won't get 9 or more out of 12 against UMass and UNH, then if UConn goes pointless in two games vs. Northeastern, UVM would get home ice with a 2 or 3 point win vs. UConn. If UConn gets 3 or fewer points vs. Northeastern, UVM would get home ice with a regulation win over UConn.
At least 28 points is needed for a chance at 7th. 35 points clinches at least a tie for 7th.

Howdy, Maine fan coming in peace just to see how you guys are feeling about our series this upcoming weekend. I am not too familiar with your teams playstyle so I am curious as to how some of you feel our teams matchup.

I feel like a hard fought split wouldn't be too surprising.

Hi Maine Blackbear fan. Big weekend for us as were looking for points to try and wrestle an 8th place finish and host of playdown round. Between UCONN, NU, UVM - 2 of 3 will gain home playdown games. You brought up split and from my vantage position I'd take 3 points and run. Looking forward to seeing Nadeau brothers as they look to be having great freshman years. Always love 1st round picks and like to see future NHL'ers. What's going on with Maine lately? Hot out of the gates and lately a few stumbles? HE is tough league as evidenced by pairwise. Have to believe if Maine finishes well, you're NCAA bound. Alfond on social media looks to be back to its old ways. For UVM we struggle to score (while better this year) but PP is an issue. Our keeper for the most part is strong and when he plays well, we're in the game. Would imagine Maine fans wearing jerseys in the Gut this weekend. You guys always travel well.

The root causes of our problems over the past month are youth and inexperience. Out of 28, only 9 players on the whole roster are upperclassmen and one of those 9 is a 3rd string tendy that never plays. We are young, mentally and physically fatigued and lack discipline in chippy games. A lot these guys are 18 or 19 and the ware and tear of D1 hockey is a big step up from where they are coming from. When the ice feels tilted against the team, things start to get out of hand and its definitely due to them being a green team that doesn't know quite how to appropriately manage stress on the ice. I go to every home game and I can tell you the core of this team is going to be National Championship level in about 2-3 years, its just not developed yet. You cant rush the development of players that are 18-19 years old. Maturity for Maine is a problem and the symptoms are bad penalties, being easily frustrated and becoming flustered under pressure. Give Barr a full recruiting cycle and Maine is going to be a contender.

I am very pleased that Vermont removed the interim title for wiedler. I am getting Ben Barr vibes from him. Vermont hockey having success is great for hockey east because it balances the Mass schools/non mass schools power balance a bit in hockey east. A non Mass school hasn't won the hockey east championship since Maine in 2004. A Vermont vs Maine rivalry could absolutely be a legitimate thing if both have sustained success.

As for this series, I think a split is mostly likely to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if one or both games go to ot or shootout. I feel like we have enough snipers to negate a good goalie but those snipers have trouble getting space and scoring against big physical teams. Its a matchup game. Speed + Size is the formula to beat Maine.

Maine fan heading your way this weekend. What sections do away teams generally sit in or what end do visitors shoot twice at?
Also just as important whats a good pregame watering hole?

Visitors shoot twice at the goal near section 1. Visitors comp tickets are in section 15. Tons to choose from for watering holes. I think Burlington used to lead the country in bars per capita or something like that. Don't know if that's still the case. Current locals would know better than I which ones are the best.

First time commenter here! But I think I've reached a breaking point with our Cats. A tough weekend at BC, watched the game on Friday night and they looked awful, granted BC is the real deal. Happy for Wiedler but also curious about the timing - I understand the need to keep recruits in the pipeline but why not give it a full season and see how things flush out before fully committing? Seems like AD Schulman just looking for an easy way out - haven't been impressed with him. It's tough seeing the quick turnaround for Northeastern, UNH, and Maine. Barr has done an outstanding job in such a short time ... was he never a candidate for UVM? There has been some good progress this year coming out of a terrible offseason situation, but I don't see any glimmer of hope for the Cats' future ... am I missing something?

On a different note from the ME/VT series this weekend...is there still talk of building a new arena, which I thought Martin St. Louis was donating money towards the project..?

Providence beat Merrimack last night. Merrimack is mathematically eliminated from first round home ice. Merrimack can still catch UVM for 9th or 10th, but 6 games would all have to go a certain way with only one pointto spare. UVM is mathematically eliminated from quarterfinal round home ice. UVM can still catch Maine or UMass, but not both. UVM will be eliminated from 5th and a 1st round bye if UMass gets more points than we do tonight. UVM controls its own destiny for a first round home ice spot and will continue to until at least the UConn game.

I haven't heard that and would be surprised if it's true. I've pretty much given up on it happening. There's been talk of a new arena since I was a student at UVM and I graduated in 1987!

I think most maine fans would be surprised . They haven't put a weekend together since end of December

Retreated into the defensive shell a bit too much in that third period buuuuuuut....huge 3 points is a huge 3 points and Gabe was awesome.
