Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Using the numbers that ScottK put up for our "sellout" capacity, Lowell wound up at 97% of capacity for the year in HE games.

Gotcha. Didn't realize UML was still on break. My UVM student interns at work were already back. That makes more sense and I'm sure Tsongas gets rocking if it's averaging 97% capacity.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

That's based on the Writers and Broadcasters votes. The actual league awards don't come out until Wed/Thu.

Hopefully those awards give the COY to someone else. Sorry but several teams made improvements this year and didnt have the talent York has.

They got 10 NHL picks on that team Two each from rounds 1&2

While UML/VT/UNH/NE combine to have 12 and only 1 in the top 2 rounds and of those 12 players 8 are 5th round or higher.

We have a week to kill before finding out whether we keep playing or not. To fill the time, who from this team will be leaving school at the conclusion of this teams season, not necessarily leaving a year early, but who will be signed by a team in the next 2-3 weeks (depending on when the season ends)?

McCarthy I think is a given. I would have to think he has teams already contacting him...

Brickely ? Florida sucks, but I'm not sure they would be interested in Brickley without time in the minors first...

Paliotta possibly.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Interesting problem for McCarthy, he can't really leave until they are either in or out of tourney, which means he can't entertain offers I don't believe.... Tough spot

I think the Cats will be as good next year although hoping they don't lose Paliotta early. Thinking that his being a Chicago draft choice bodes well for him staying. He could be dominant next year if he stays. don't see much risk elsewhere of losing top guys. Yeah, McCarthy is a big loss but getting Reynolds back helps and lets face it, the freshmen forwards and McCarthy carried the team for much of the season. Shaw could be a monster power forward the next three years, he had a pretty strong breakout weekend and a half inch here or there on a couple of his chances and Cats are playing Friday largely because of him. Puskarich is obviously a gifted snipe that we have not seen in years (compare his and V Stalberg freshman numbers and you get the point). Bradley is good and should develop. I like Forgionne and what he has to offer going forward with his speed. Do wonder what happened to Stenerson? I liked his game but he disappeared.

We have some talented D coming in. I think the assistants have improved the recruiting and it showed in this seasons freshmen and it will show in the incoming class next year also.

We are losing a decent sized class but outside of McCarthy I'm not sure we are losing anything on the ice that will not be replaced or upgraded (don't know about locker room though, do suspect having met McCarthy that he was a good leader, hoping Paliotta stays and helps there)

So I think the next few years is pretty bright. Getting Reynolds back alone goes a fair distance in offsetting McCarthy loss, he was closest thing to sniper we had before Puskarich arrived.

And one other important point. Hoffman had a break out last few weeks. He played beyond where I thought he could. If the Hoffman of the past three weekends shows up regularly the next two years that is a HUGE upgrade in the net and we start winning a lot of games that we lost this past RS due to goaltending. I like where things are headed. Now about that powerplay which is our final peice of the puzzle.......

Puskarich doesn't even compare with Stalberg, who actually didn't have great seasons until he broke out his Junior year. I'd compare him to Mitchell before Stalberg, but no matter who you compare him to from an offensive standpoint he is far and away the best Freshman that we have had since entering HE.

McCarthy is a big loss. None of the other class is irreplaceable from an offensive standpoint but they do bring things that will need replacing. Brickley's tenacious play and physical edge will need to be replaced. You have to have someone that plays with that edge. Lenz is just very steadfast and reliable, but replacing that isn't such a big deal. I think with him it will be a leadership issue, he's been a C for a few seasons here and that was for a reason. Bruneteau will be a tough loss on the blue line, he plays offensively and that can be an issue sometimes, but he plays offensively and having that defensemen that can jump up into the play when needed is a huge plus. I think Privetta (sp?) can jump in here and make up for that loss.

All in all I do think that this team is heading up, but the McCarthy hole is going to be the big one. Reynolds will pick up his scoring no doubt, but it's his effort, his digging pucks out, being a pain for the opposing team that I don't see anyone on the current roster filling. That may change, Forgionne has those characteristics and could jump up in the line up to fill some of that void, although he is missing the scoring touch. Possible Bradley or Shaw will develop some over the summer and fill more of that role...

Either way, I hope they get at least one more game before it all ends. I think this team is a dangerous team in a one and done tournament and I think they could make a run. We played a decent OOC schedule and did quite well in it.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I've mentioned this before, but it may actually play out. UVM scheduled 33 regular season games instead of the 34 that is allowed. I see this a huge mistake, even a win against RPI or heck even Mercyhurst would be enough for this team to be sitting in 11th instead of 14th. I hope next year they fill out a full slate of games, because if they are the first team out it's going to be a real shame they didn't' play that extra game...

Penn State just did us a huge favor by knocking off Michigan. Hopefully that moves Michigan behind us in the PWR. We'll see.....

Right now Vermont has moved up to 13th while Michigan would be out at 16th.

Still a few possibilities VT doesn't make it but that win by PSU helps out a lot. Now as long as they don't beat Minny we should be alright.

Unless of course we lost that game. (See Tie with Dartmouth , See UML Lowell loss and BC losses this year). There is also something to be said for getting rest and healthy.

Like I said, a win against Mercyhurst would have increased our RPI and move the Cats up. Sure they could have lost and then not even be on the bubble, but at least you have to opportunity to play the game. They could schedule only HE teams so they don't lose any OOC games but they won't make the tourney that way...

Most every team schedules 34 games, there are only a few that didn't. If it wasn't an advantage to do so I would expect that everyone would be scheduling fewer games?

Either way done now, but if they just miss I would feel pretty poorly about myself if I was the AD

Wins by Wisc. Minn and Quin would go a long way. Throw in a Union win and it's a good night

We were due to play Bently as final game but the rescinded because Shaw decomitted from there and came to UVM. They basically rescinded thinking UVM tampered.
