Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Decent game last night. UVM outplayed them for a large part of the game, and got out played for large stretches too. A nice back and forth game. That was a winnable game last night, I thought the D and F kinda let Santa down in clearing rebounds, you really can't let BC take 2-3 shots at a time. For his part Santa does need to work on not giving those up...

Nice to see them really battle right to the end still trying to get that tying goal, even after they went down 4-2 they kept fighting. The Turk line handled BC's star line great and they should be happy with that. Sneddon was ripped in the post game with Fallon's line as that line was -3. I'd expect to see very limited ice time for them, or a bit of a mix up in lines.

Hopefully the team takes away from last night that they can beat BC and come out tonight with some confidence and really take it to them.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Valiant effort, and a winnable game. But man, BC is really good. It's as if they cruise along in 4th gear and when the opportunity presents itself, they kick it to 5th gear and blow by you. UVM played great. For once I agree with Sneddon's post game comments about the softness of the BC goals. They were momentary let downs that could have easily not been goals. But that is what BC does, they wait for the let down and capitalize. I also enjoyed Sneddon getting fired up about the horribleness of the 5-3 power play. "Boring, boring, boring" Some rare emotion from the head coach. Here's hoping we can pull 2 points out of the weekend, but UVM will have to play near perfect.

Side note: Why does it seem we can't go a game without getting a boarding or hitting from behind penalty.

It's because HE refs go to the women's hockey ref school and think any hit that rattles the glass has to be called. Now, a few of those hits were penalties, but a lot of clean hits called each and every game. Notre Dame fans have complained about the reffing all season... they aren't used to the terrible officiating yet. That and their team is struggling and they whine a lot.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Big match up this weekend between Gaudreau's line and the 59-line who will be matched up with them the most. I refer to Forgione
Turk and Massar who are all 5'9". They have the speed to stay with them and if they can spend more time in the BC end it will go
along way for VT's chances.

5 on 5 last night

59-Line 1
Superline 0

I think they can hang with them

Sneddon is wrong wrong wrong on what he said. He takes his most dynamic forward and puts him at the point on 5 v 4 and 5 v 3. He uses Markinson who can fly on PP but unfortunately has below average hands. Why take McCarthy who has possessed the puck and created all year down low and move him to the point. Teams on the PK just need to get the puck down low and ice it because we have no possession people there. That's on the coaches. Puskarich is a goal scorer not a possession but he's down low, Markinson I've referenced, Bradley is just ok down low. So how does the staff expect the PP to function? Get it to the points and let McCartht and Paliotta blast on net when teams sag? That's on the coaching for boring boring boring. Also in the second, Sneddon could have made a line change after Fallon line got a face off with 30 seconds left and he didn't. They end up giving up a goal. Also, after we scored he never came back with top line, which he should have to maintained momentum. Bottom line 3 soft goals and in my opinion suspect coaching decisions led to this loss.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I don't feel bad at all after the game last night. If UVM can play the best team in the country 4-3 and not even have a great game, anything can happen.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Oh I remember that season and I remember this goal...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZRM6oi6cao

Kid is nasty and my point stands. Pretty sure he has family in VT. Too bad we couldn't get him to play at UVM!

Yeah he does, I was chatting with them, they're from Canada

with 1 down 1 to go, BC will go all out tonight and hopefully the D will clean up last night's mistakes

I expect Demko to be in net again and the difference of having 2 lines is immense, not just G-A-H, but the other lines are contributing too. Sneddon was ****sed but really, they also have talent with Cangelosi, Fitzgerald, and now Brown is on fire. He has double digit goals now ) These guys have about 30 goals, big depth that we didn't have last year

Santa kept the game close with great saves

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Well that was pretty much what I expected, maybe 1 goal more on each side than I thought but a 1-goal game is pretty much to be expected I think at this point in the Gut.

UVM fans on this thread can find some silver linings tomorrow if BC wins, as it would eliminate UML.

Eliminate UML from what?

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

That was a pretty terrible game IMO. The D was absolutely terrible, just too many mistakes, pucks bouncing over sticks and missed assignments. Another winnable game that was gifted away. The only positive is that the team should realize they CAN play with anyone, it only comes down to whether they do.

And not that it affected the game but what an embarrassing performance from the linesman... and the refs, but jeez the linesman were another whole story...

Fallon is unproductive in his current spot, he should really move back up onto the first line. Markinson needs something, he scored last night but is largely a non factor.

The 59 line is great at shutting down the other team but they need some work and direction on the offensive part. That line took what seemed like half the teams shots last night, but not one was from below the top of the circles and none had any chance at beating Billet. They had all the opportunity in the world to take a few more strides and maybe make a move or something, but if you are going to throw a wrister staight on the goalie from the blue line you may as well give it to someone else. Can't say enough about them from a defensive standpoint but they need to do something more offensively.

Cats drop to 15th in the PWR. Got to play better against MC. Anything less then a sweep at Lawler and any chance at the NCAAs goes out the window. These team is good enough to make the tourney and make a little noise, but they have to be a lot better defensively. You can't outplay a team like BC for much of the game only to just cough up the puck at the blue line over and over.

Thought Santa and D was a difference maker the wrong way in this game. On the SH goal he never challenged and at his height you need to. The wrist shot from Hayes he should have had. The Gaudreau goal deflected off his shin bad, not on Santa. Hamilton is scaring the hell out of me he is all over the ice and making Paliotta work twice as hard to cover. On BC second goal I put that on Sneddon. You have 40 seconds left, your top line is ready, you put out the 59 line against their not top line. He's made two non line change that resulted in goals the last minute.

As far as Fallon you can't move him to top line. He is a center. You do that and you take. McCarthy out of center spot where he is a point machine. Fallon has opportunities just needs to stop trying too much.

Yeah mostly agree with what you just said. Outshot and outskated BC for the second night in a row with nothing to show for it. Going down 2-0 at the end of the first was just brutal. Gifting BC that breakaway on our own power play was a kick to the nuts of everybody in the Gut. Once again the team showed some grit to make a small comeback and score some goals but they have to avoid those mental breakdowns early on. Brunetteau's had a good night offensively with that amazingly patient goal and his assist to McCarthy. Markinson also scored a beauty of a power play goal.

Super frustrating weekend but not all negative.

I couldn't agree with you more. Change is needed for this team to succeed. But I doubt that will happen, as UVM athletics is too timid to do anything about it. We'll see.

I see why BC is #1. It's very frustrating watching a team do things so effortlessly and then watch our team struggle and grind with no success. BC's flow and constant state of movement is so impressive. Like swarming bee's never stopping, keeping the puck moving and always headed to the net. One thing that has always drove me nuts is when UVM breaks into the zone and easily gets pushed to the corner. Percentages of goals scored from the corner are pretty low. That first period sums up our entire season. Dominate in shots, possession and momentum and come out of the period down 2-0.

I didn't get to hear the post game show, but wanted to hear Sneddon's take on the officiating, if Ted actually asked him about it. What a disgraceful performance by the refs. Missed calls galore, linesmen blowing the whistle for "no calls". BC was clutching and grabbing all night, not to mention all the high sticks that did not get called. Calls we not made evenly between both teams. I loved hearing Sneddon get fired up from across the ice. He had ever reason to.

bc taking a page out of vermont's book? ;)

7 penalties a piece, how many did you want called? sheesh.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Looked depressingly like 2 more "moral victories" this weekend. Amazing how moral victories never actually turn into 2 points.

That short handed goal was a thing of beauty, Santa never had a chance. Paliotta blew it, first by letting the puck hop out of the zone and then by not getting a stick or anything on the guy... you can't just let a forwards walts into the zone and rifle a shot short handed.

I'm not putting many of the goals at all on Santa, I mean most of the goals were off 2nd 3rd and 4th tries. The D can't let those guys have that many opportunities... they have to clear the freaking puck out of the zone. If you are going to give BC 3-4 tries they are going to score. 9 out of 10 times.

As for Fallon, McCarthy was at a ppg with Fallon at center and that includes 5-6 games at the beginning of the year where he was paired with Brickley or Bradley and wasn't producing as much so I'm just going to disagree that McCarthy needs to be at center.

You can say that but it comes down to talent between the 2 teams. This team has the top line in the nation and another line that produces almost 30 goals. BC has depth on the lines and and studs on D that not many teams have. Last year, BC did not have depth and injuries can obviously hurt it. This year BC has more size along with that speed and you have 2 good goalies.

You can make line changes and play some guys more but it also wears down your best players when BC keeps rolling those fresh lines out at full speed. The reffing went both ways this weekend as Gravellese is not one of BC's favorite ref.
