Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I agree with you about a number of things.

I've been consistently impressed with Forgione mostly because he seems to do smart things with the puck and as was pointed out on the PK. Good teams need solid role players. Initially I thought Sneddon was screwing up / not getting the match ups he wanted when I consistently saw Massar / Turk / Forg (the "4th line") on the ice against the opposing teams "top line" but they have been doing a great job
I also agree about the post game interviews. Do they have an agreement on what sorts of topics / questions are off limits?

We all would like to know things like why Fallon was really out, but to be honest, I think it would be a waste of time to ask. Remember the opposing coach is in the room, and if coach Sneddon gave any details , you can be sure that coach would be sending off an email to the other HE coaches, and to SLU's coach for sure. Just because we want to know, I think it's more important for other teams not to know!

Looks like we notched up a couple positions to #18 in the national rankings.

Looking forward to playing you guys at Starr this weekend. It appears you have an excellent team this season. Always love to face old ECAC foes. Will be interesed to see if the Raiders can keep it rolling after our successful tournament last weekend in Minny.

Watched a lot of the Minny game on TV. That was an awesome win. You guys skated with them well and they are a powerhouse team at home in that big rink. Should be a good match up this week if the Cats bring their game.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Vermont has always been my 2nd favorite team...which will make Saturday's game difficult to watch. Hated seeing them leave the ECAC and have never felt like they adjusted well to HE, IMHO.

Yale, Quinnipiac, Union and Cornell have been in the national limelight for several seasons and playing them is great competition for Colgate, but HE is HE...and Colgate rarely has the opportunity to play BC, Providence, UNH or BU on a regular basis the way Vermont does. To play these storied programs multiple times every season will make this Saturday a tougher game for Colgate.

Despite a spectacular showing last weekend and some other solid victories, the Raiders lost twice to UMASS and should not be favored at home, where their record - and their fan support - is weak. Just don't know which Colgate team will emerge. The Raiders take penalties, especially late in the game, which kills momentum and can cost them the game.

If Finn has a good night in goal, it should be a good match.

Agree on Forgione. I keep thinking this kid is going to be fun to watch for the next 3.5 seasons. And Markinson is FAST. Man if he could only handle the puck and shoot better. Turk seemed a bit lost last year but is playing nicely with Massar and Forgione. Massar is having a very nice season also.

Not happy that Fallon was healthy scratch (as I was informed). I wonder if his past behavioral issues are showing up again. he is a heck of a player, 2nd in ability next to McCarthy among forwards IMHO. Bradley is pretty good and that line still potted all three goals but I felt like that line was still let impressive and less physical without him out there.

Maybe they leave Bradley and move Fallon to one of the other lines that is not as dangerous and we end up with three dangerous lines instead of the current two. Very difficult schedule ahead in conference, will be lucky to end up over .500 in conference but every game should be hard fought.

Still not sold on Santiguida, having said that, Fallon gave up a weak goal to Dartmouth.

No home games for six weeks. Brutal. Go Cats.

I'm not so impressed with Fallon this year. Last year if he managed a 1:1 with the goalie it was practically a given that he would score and he was more effective on the PP. this year he seems to goof around with the puck too much IMHO.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

So Colgate up this weekend for the last of non-league opponents... Cats are 3-0-2 against the ECAC this year after Tuesdays win against Saint Lawerence, while Colgate is 5-3-1 against League opponents and coming off a tie at Minny and a win of Ferris State.

Seems Like Colgate played really well last weekend however has been up and down, beating FSU twice this year, but also dropping two to UMass. On paper this looks like it should be a relatively easy Cat win. Colgate comes in with a PP at 12.6% and a PK at 80%, averages 2.5 gpg while giving up nearly 3 gpg. Interestingly, Colgate has a much worse record at home then on the road, 3-7 at home and 4-2-2 on the road. However, paper is for writing on and with a win and tie against the #1 and #3 ranked teams in the nation, Colgate should have some confidence and energy coming into the game.

Santa should be in net, and hopefully the Cats can notch another OOC win. Currently, the Cats sit 14th in the PWR so these OOC games are especially important right now for any aspirations of making the NCAA tourney. Hopefully they come out hard and keep up their play.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Every game is a big one for the Cats being so near the PWR bubble, below .500 in conference, and with a brutal schedule ahead of them for the balance of the RS. I only wish they could play BU in a pair this weekend.

I think this will be a telling game with Colgate riding high of a momentous road trip last weekend. If Cats can man up and post a W I will be impressed.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I'm excited for this game against Colgate. It brings back fun memories. Anyone remember the 1989 2 game playoff. The first night was a 2-2 tie. The second night was a big deal because it was on WCAX with Tony Adams and Jim Cross. After being down 3-0, UVM scored 7 consecutive goals by Boyce, Lambert, Labreau, Boyce, Walsh, Jagod, and Walsh. I only remember the order because Tony repeated it about a thousands times. And it didn't help that I taped the game and watched it over and over. (Cause that's what 9 year olds do) Colgate scored one more and Mike McLaughlin topped it off for an 8-4 win, and on to the ECAC semi's at the Garden. All those names bring back good memories from the ECAC.

You're right. With Colgate riding high, this will be a good test. Especially with the string of games to come. The season has been a pleasant surprise so far, but the next couple of weeks will show what this team really is. From what I have seen so far, the Cats can play with anyone. The parody throughout the league this year has been fun to watch and means that every game is up for grabs. If the Cats go on a tear, they could find themselves at the top of the division.

Now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember that. I remember the teams of that era somewhat better. Ian Boyce and Kyle McDonough were great, great players. Boyce was relentless on the forecheck and could pick a defender's pocket and have it in the back of the net before he knew what happened. McDonough was equally adept at scoring.

I was there too ... working the radio side ... a memorable win for Boyce, McDonough, Jerry Tarrant, Jeff Schulman and a great Catamount team. Two year in a row they made it to the Garden ... beat a Harvard team there that later went on to win the National Championship ... but each time they couldn't solve St. Lawrence. Frustrating!

Oh, back to today ... actually it was in Boston last night ... doing the PBP as former Catamount Billy Faust re-surfaced in a UMass-Boston sweater, and made 34 saves in his first start for the Beacons as they beat Norwich 4-2.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Decisions, decisions.

With an attempt not to put any blame on the players themselves, there are two crucial decisions that need to be made. Neither would fall on the shoulders of the players, only the decision maker at the helm.
#1. Without the offensive productivity, Brickley is hurting the team. As exciting and hard hitting as he is, he is disabling the team. It might be easier to swallow if he were putting the puck in the net, but unfortunately that is not happening. A rearrangement of lines or a benching to keep him from putting the team at a disadvantage is needed. #2. The goalie duel has been fun to watch, but a choice needs to be made. Heading into the heart of the HE schedule, the goaltender spot needs to be solidified. Using the "Eye Test", Hoffman is the man. Santa has had a great start to his collegiate career, but soft goals seem to be aplenty. Hoffman was the man last year, and there is no reason to think he can't do the job this year. Friday, Saturday, he needs to be the guy in net.
We'll have to see if these decisions can be made.
Thoughts?

Agree with you on Brickley, the most over-hyped player in the history of UVM hockey. He contributes little offensively and is a liability more times than not. You'd figure after 4 years he'd have a better understanding of what he can, and can't, get away with.

Also agree on the goalie situation. Don't know if any of Colgate's goals were softees but, for right now at least, I think Hoffman gives them a better chance to win.

We need HE points this weekend against Northeastern. No losing the 1st game (HE) and then winning the 2nd (non-conf)!!!

Yeah, funny having a non conference game against a conference team, for the second time this season. Hopefully they pull out the right win, but I will take a sweep too.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I agree completely on Brickley and Hoffman comments. As I have said previously, I like Santa but he's tiny and more prone to softees than this team cannot afford. gotta go with Hoffman at least 75%

That loss to Colgate was telling to me. This is a much improved team over the past four years but this is still a slightly sub .500 HE squad that will definitely miss the NCAA tournament. If they were good enough to make the tourney and finish in top half of HE they would have figured out how to beat Colgate. They still will be fun to watch but they are a couple of snipers away from being a tournament team.

Billy Faust Honored By ECAC East Conference “Goalie of The Week”
Faust enjoyed a remarkable debut weekend for the Beacons after transferring into UMass Boston over break from Division I University of Vermont. The former Catamount stopped 54 of the 56 shots he faced on the weekend to go 2-0 against a pair of ECAC East opponents. Friday night in his first collegiate start, Faust recorded 34 saves on 36 shots to lead UMass Boston to a 4-2 victory over the fifth-ranked Cadets. Saturday he came up huge again, stopping all 20 shots he faced in the second and third periods, after coming in at the first intermission with the Beacons trailing 4-1.
