Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I don't understand how Micelleto can be here at UVM for years and years and manage a PP that was in the low teens at best but move to UMass and all of a sudden put up 20%+ especially the overall offense of UMA... it's almost like they are PP specialists. And yet he couldn't do anything with the PP while at UVM  I think he must have got "Powerplay for dummies" guide...

This is a great hockey game. I thought UVM would get better as the game goes on given UVM defensive/grind it style. UMass had a speed and
loose" play advantage early... eroding now with UVM defensive style. Taking advantage of precision on the small details. Imagine it will take a lot for UMass to win this one now. But tied at 1 with one period to go... great showing so far by both teams and great showing for hockey east... lot of parity this season.

Brickley needs to be put in front of the net more. He is a strong guy.. hard to move.

Fortunate to win tonight. Outplayed in the first and most of second, UVM better in the third. The Cats owe this W to Hoffman. His save on that 2 on 1 in the first was a game saver, and one of the best saves I've ever seen live (can't wait to see the video). Great offensive possession/cycle and gorgeous pass by Descenzo from Gretsky's office to Brickley, who had a wide open net, partially fanned, but trickled it in. Need a much better effort next weekend to win a game, let alone a series.

I thought UVM came out ok first five min and then stunk balance of 1st and much of 2nd. Picked it up in the third but were lucky to be tied going in. Overall thought it was one of their sloppiest games. Hoffman was awesome though, he turned a corner last weekend and is carrying them. He is now making GAME SAVING stops. If he keeps this up and skaters show up next weekend and they have a shot. Happy to see Decenzo out there, good for him. Happy for seniors to get to next level. Hope Paliotta comes back next season, he's turning into a serious difference maker along with Hoffman

On to the QF's, against most likely UML, but PC is still a chance opponent if ME gets upset. Doesn't much matter who they play, both will be tough games and they will have to be ready but they can skate with both of the clubs. I guess I'd prefer PC simply for the PWR aspect, two wins in the QF against PC would move us ahead of them, two wins against UML and I think UML would probably remain ahead... Either way the key is winning two games and it won't much matter if that happens.

All in all it last night was a win and kudos to the Cats as it looks like they have finally figured out how to win close games, even when you are not playing your best.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

For all of the pretty losses this year I will take a Ugly Win.

While that save by Hoffman was awesome it was off a terrible play by Hamilton who struglled
big time last night esp on the PP. It was a 2 on 1 and he played the puckcarrier instead of covering
the pass, better to give up a shot on a ready goalie than give up a half empty net shot or at least go down
like Brunateau did when he stopped the other 2 on 1.

Masser need to come back as the 59 line has not been the same, defensively they have been ok but the Off
production has disappeared since he left.

Loved it when the refs ingored the tv time out and droppped the puck, tv guys must not have seen because of
the scrum that followed that the Umass goalie had taken the net off thus like an icing they cant change and so
you cannot have a tv timeout otherwise the offending team gets rest.

A win is a win ugly or pretty. It was a big game and UMA is a tough opponent no matter what the HE standings say.

With or without Massar the 59 line has no offensive production. I did the math before in our discussion of mixing up the lines but if I remember they had accounted for 3 goals in the last 10 games (at the point in the discussion) which was good for something like 12%. They are a great shut down line and generate a lot of shots as well, but they do not score as most of their shots come as soon as they cross the blue line. A wrister from the blue line with no traffic is going to get stopped by the tender 99.99999% of the time. But that's ok too, they are the shut down line and they are good at it, I don't expect offense from them and if they do pot one here and there its a bonus.

I like 11th in the PWR... but a win would make me feel a lot better about their chances. Depending on everyone else they could still probably get in without the win but taking another game or two off UML would make things much better...

The wildcard is the ECAC. Yale or Colgate moving up could cause problems. We need union/q to win out and we might squeek by...but I think we have to win 1.

How about the other Hockey East games? Anyone know which team wins help UVM? (Ie Maine over Providence)?

Maine and New Hampshire would help but not sure how far they would move up but in general that would help.
