Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I don't think we can complain about not having Girgensons this season, can't expect a serviceable NHL level player to hang out in college for a 2nd year. I do wish he had come to school for one season, he might not have lit it up, but he would have surely helped a thin squad last year.

Hopefully we get a full redshirt year of Reynolds, that will help depth that final year and he could have a McCarthy like step up in the future although next year he will suffer from the full year off ice this year. Polesello was fun to watch, was unfortunate he left. It was that dynamo Montreal forward that was the biggest loss; imagine him with this freshman class, OMG it would have been epic. and he might have stuck for three or four years given his undersized frame.

I'm encouraged about the prospect of the new building. I think we are losing fans to the uncomfortable seating in 75% of the rink. A new venue with comfy seats, nice wide walkways and improved concessions (beer hopefully) will make it a much more enjoyable experience and should draw more fans in.

Who is that exactly?

What a weird situation with this Vatrano kid who is eligible for his very first game at Amherst this weekend. Apparently committed to BC last year but never played a game. He's technically considered a transfer student for UMass this year but is apparently allowed to play in the hockey east tourney.

I think Reynolds and Puskarich on a line centered by Fallon could be a huge line, although the thing that worries me is it lacks a player who is really going to dig the puck out from the corner and boards like McCarthy does. McCarthy is huge in that he is one of the more gifted scorers and he still plays hard physical hockey. Neither Reynolds or Puskarich play that style. Fallon will need to spend more time in that role... On the other hand splitting Reynolds and Puskarich gives two lines with "finishers."

Wow Luongo traded to FLA.... so will Thomas be Luongo's back up, or will Luongo be back up for Thomas? Whose going to pump whose tires?

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Is going to NY really better though?

With Lundqvist in the crease, without a doubt. Bishop was solid at Maine, but I never thought he'd be this good (much less be an nhl starter).

The rangers are definitely better on D too.

NY teams suck, from a biased boston sports fan's perspective.

Nah Timmy got shipped to Dallas

That's kind of an odd deal. Who wan't Ellis? and it's not like Thomas had a huge salary... so Florida got screwed in the deal more or less. I would speculate one of the two have hard feelings and reading some of Thomas' tweets sounds like it was Luongo.

did yzerman do/say something other than simply leave st. louis off the initial team canada roster? i understand st. louis being upset but he's not the only one. claude giroux was left off too and others.

It is a little different when it is your boss....so there might be bigger things at play.

St Louis said basically he started thinking of leaving the team the day he was left off Team Canada. I'm sure other factors came into play once he started thinking about it but I think its pretty clear from St Louis comments that was what got the ball rolling so to speak. Others were left off but they also weren't the previous seasons top scorer, they weren't ppg players this season, and I think it would be hard to argue that they had MSL's heart, compete level and talent in general. There were also a few players that really had no business being selected. One final thought is MSL made it clear he wanted to be on that roster, which if he didn't deserve to be would be one thing, but when you do deserve to be there and make it absolutely clear that you want the spot it's a pretty big dis by your boss to leave you off. And then who knows the behind the scenes details, Yzerman may not have done the best job communicating with MSL about his decisions or handled it well...

Regardless, that was a main reason for him leaving.

i think the difficult thing for players is seeing guys you are better than get picked ahead of you. they can't wrap their mind around someone like yzerman and his crew putting together the best "team" rather than just looking at stats or taking the 12 highest scoring forwards. politics certainly come into play. for example, i think claude giroux is definitely on par with st. louis talent wise. he's a terrific player but there was speculation he was left off because of his rift with crosby. i am just surprised st. louis took it as far as he did, as personally as he did. tampa is in contention and just got stamkos back, figured marty could suck it up, put it behind him and try to win another cup.

Could be worse, its been reported Luongo was traded because he didn't get to start the Heritage Classic...

There is a lot that can be going on behind the scenes. Remember it is his boss that did this. At the end of the day this is a business and a job. If something happens in your work environment that you don't like it can affect you. I did my time in corporate America and when the bosses left and new ones came in the workplace went straight downhill. Small changes at first then just collapsed. Pretty soon we all just wanted a package to leave.
