The eyes of the WCHA will be shifted up north this weekend as the No. 2 Badgers (14-6-4, 10-5-3 WCHA) hit the road to battle conference-leading Minnesota Duluth (16-9-1, 12-5-1 WCHA) in a crucial two-game series Friday and Saturday night.
The Badgers lead the all-time series against UMD by an 86-56-13 margin. In the teams’ last series in January of 2009, the Badgers and Bulldogs both came away with a victory.
This weekend, UW hopes that senior forward Michael Davies (St. Louis) continues his relentless in-conference play. He tied Wisconsin’s longest scoring streak of the season by reaching seven games with points in both games last weekend against then-No.1 Denver. Davies, who has at least two points in six consecutive games, boasts six goals and 15 points during his current streak.
Sophomore forward Derek Stepan (Hastings, Minn.) extended his own scoring streak to five games (one goal, eight assists), while senior forward Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) has points in four consecutive games (three goals, four assists). Rookie forward Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) has points in four games (one goal, four assists) after all three players recorded points in both games last weekend against Denver.
Wisconsin boasts the second-highest scoring team in the nation with a 4.00 goals-per-game average. The Badgers lead the nation with 96 goals scored. They also lead the nation with a 1.67 goals-per-game scoring margin, and rank ninth in the country with their 2.33 goals-against-per-game mark.
For the last time, the Badgers will skate at the DECC in Duluth, a rink sizably smaller than the Kohl Center’s. The UMD Bulldogs will open a new arena for home games next season.
Wisconsin is 4-1-3 against teams ranked at the time of the game after posting a victory and tie at the Kohl Center against Denver last weekend. The Badgers complete a stretch of 10 games that included nine match ups with ranked opponents this weekend at Minnesota Duluth.
The top seven scorers in WCHA games will be on the ice this weekend in the series in the form of UMD’s Justin Fontaine (25 points), Jack Connolly (24), Mike Connolly (24), and Rob Bordson (21). UW will be represented by Blake Geoffrion (23), Brendan Smith (21), and Derek Stepan (21).
Both nights’ games will get underway at 7 p.m. in Duluth.
