Stout had a very strong weekend in Stevens Point, I was very impressed with Lescovich on Friday and his resilience on Saturday. The team picked up their play in the 2nd period Saturday and won the game based on hard work and gritty play. It will be very interesting to see how much Stout will continue to improve in the coming weeks. The team continues to gel and the newcomers are showing their talent and being rewarded with top line minutes and power play time. Stout could really surprise some teams with their continued good play.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season Thread 2010-2011: We're still here

Upon leaving the K.B. Willett Arena this weekend, a group of Devils Advocates’ were stopped by someone who was cleaning the arena after the game. This guy was probably between 18-20 years old and had a Nike Bauer hockey jacket on. He could have been a local junior player. He wanted to know what was going on with some of Stout’s off-ice distractions this year. After conversing with the young man for about 2 minutes, he stated: “After losing 10 guys from your team, and most of them upper-classmen, I think it’s great you guys are still supporting your team on the road. Everyone thought you’d be in the bottom of the conference and no one here I talked to were worried about you guys. I just think it’s great you still support your friends and the team. You guys proudly come in wearing your Stout stuff not afraid to bust the chops of Point students no matter what they said to you. You can come in here on the road and sweep the Pointers with almost all freshmen and sophomores. That’s just awesome.”
He then wished us a safe drive home. This kid may be the nicest Pointer fan I have ever seen. Although he doesn’t really count because I’m fairly certain he wasn’t a student (although I could be mistaken). To go out his way to stop total strangers from the opposing team and say those things, especially between these two schools really means something.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season Thread 2010-2011: We're still here

I'm amazed by Stout's play so far. We said it before last season at SNC when there were some off the ice issues and some non-senior losses, but sometimes a good house cleaning isn't the worst thing for a program. The difference here, and why I was thinking possibly last place for Stout, was that SNC knew it in time to snag a few last minute recruits where Stout's problems were after school started and didn't allow for time to recruit any replacments. I thought that combined with the loss of some top line guys from last season really didn't bode well. So far I'm looking pretty wrong.

Wanted to get the fans thoughts on Robb Haider...

Haider brings a lot of hype considering his resume. Some hockey illuminati in Alaska are quoted as saying, "lets not fool ourselves, Robb Haider is a legitimate DI prospect." Haider carried his South Anchorage Wolverines to four-straight state championships. Robb also set the South Anchorage record for career points in just three seasons. He ended with 71 goals and 62 assists for 133 points in 102 games. Haider put himself into another elite class, joining former Anchorage East star and current Montreal Canadian Scott Gomez (1995, 1996) as the only two men to be named state player of the year more than once.

Robb has been out with a very minor upper-body injury that has now healed. He should make his debut this weekend against UW-Eau Claire. Everything I've heard from the coaches and his fellow teammates at UW-Stout are overwhelmingly positive. They think he'll have what it takes to be major impact player right out of the gate.

I'm one of the many interested to see how he does in his first series...

Although I haven't yet seen Haider on the ice yet, I am very interested to see how he adds to the overall skill of the team. I have heard nothing but good things about him and am looking forward to seeing him play his first game for Stout at the Dunn Co. Haider adds depth to our line up and some more skill to a team that is playing very well at the moment. I hope that Haider plays very well and that the team continues to improve each game.

Interesting. Initial thoughts would have me think either:

1- The growth of Junior hockey in the last 15 years has led to a decrease in the number of top players still playing at the high school level in the state of Alaska and elsewhere.

or

2- There is something about Haider that has turned off D1 coaching staffs (injury prone? attitude? off ice issues? academic problems? etc. etc.)

Where did Haider play in-between high school and the 09/10 junior season? Looks like a 20/21 year old frosh but only has one year of stats listed in the NAHL...and I admit...I'm too lazy to look it up beyond that.

I don't think it's off-ice or academic. He's a great guy who held a perfect 4.0 GPA in high school. He's majoring in engineering at Stout. He could have wanted to continue to play with his friends since there are so many AA recruits on this year's team.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season Thread 2010-2011: We're still here

After a very rough off-season Stout came into the season picked to be at the bottom of the NCHA. Although there were many ups and downs throughout the season the team exceeded everyone's expectations by tying for 2nd in the NCHA and becoming Co-Champions of the WIAC. After last weekend where Stout defeated Stevens Point and St. Norbert, the team is coming into the playoffs on a roll. Looking through our conference the Blue Devils could surprise many people with their play during these playoffs.
