UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

I cannot imagine the bus ride not being a factor, the Primelink anchors (Plattsburgh, Norwich & Middlebury) have consistently been among the crème de la crème, as such, one cannot easily pass on the opportunity to participate. That said, the tournament organizers NEED to work with the western schools should they expect them to be at the top of their game and offer their stakeholders - the tournament, its participants, players, fans, etc what they deserve in the much hyped event. The solution? I'm not sure, if flights are too expensive, then maybe at least an extra travel day. Certainly much Kudos’ are due the Trent Trahan, CEO of PrimeLink (a subsidiary of The Champlain Telephone Company who is the sole sponsor of the event), but they should be able to earn another “Most Innovative” ONYX Marketing Award and come up with something.

As far as the travel, maybe our Oswego posters can speak to it. They came out here last year on a bus for two games in DePere and looked great. They played loose and really looked like they were having fun. I believe they came out early and truly embraced the trip, taking in the sites and different things. Travel can all be in how you approach it. If you embrace the experience it can be much different than if you are rushing to get there and basically only stopping at a gas station every 4 or 5 hours for a bathroom break and some junk food.

Oswego, NY is over 300miles west of Northfield, VT, 6 hours is a big difference, particularly the LAST 6 hours.

EDIT:
Northfield, VT to Menomonie, Wisc. ~1350 miles
Oswego, NY to De Pere, Wisc. ~ 900miles

At 450miles, on a tour bus in a rural enviroment it is probably close to an 8 hour difference, that is a full work day!

While the 450 miles are you referring to is rural, only the last 100 miles or so are not on an interstate.

Rural interstate speeds average about 10MPH slower than urban interstate speeds (at least from experience - I drive about 75,000 miles a year, mostly east coast - NY, New Jersey, DC, Atlanta, Southern Florida). My best guess, drivers feel there is "safety" in numbers - i.e. they can't catch us all.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Coming out a day early, getting plenty of sleep in a hotel and eating right = Good.

Getting to the rink 2 hours before the game and eating truck stop food for a pre game meal = Bad.

My experiances say busses exempt themselves from that as a rule.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Just last week I saw a police officer puling over a greyhound bus on the I-87 southbound lane :p
New York State is exempt from that rule. The rule re-asserts itself in New Jersey where there is NO speed limit on the Turnpike or I-295. Just keep right and use your blinkers when passing, and they leave you alone.

I have taken my AMG to over 160MPH on the Garden State Parkway south of exit 95 (someone in a Corvette thought they could pass the big ole S-Class).:D

BTW, in the three years I've owned the S-65 (612 horsepower, 738 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds), it has been over 100MPH for maybe a total of 50 miles, I do not advocate high speed driving, it is not the drivers life - it is those you may encounter - there was extremely little traffic on the GSP that time, when the traffic picked up, I slowed down.

A good point. While I don't know what day they began their trip, I do know the Lakers didn't do it all in a day. They stopped at Notre Dame on the way to skate and tour the football stadium. I don't remember if they spent the night or not, but I'm inclined to say they did. Upon arriving at Green Bay, they also went on a tour of Lambeau Field and had a Thanksgiving Dinner as a team not on the bus. I'd guess they left Oswego on Tuesday and returned on Sunday.

I dunno, long bus rides suck, but traveling long distances to play highly touted opponents is also fun and challenging. Had Stout won the Primelink everyone would be talking about how great the roadtrip was and how it really made Stout come together as a team and gel in preparation for the rest of their NCHA schedule. I gotta believe had those games been played at the Dunn the scores may have been a little different, but the end result would have been the same. Just because you're playing on an Olympic sheet when you're used to an NHL one doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be outshot 92-40 on a weekend...

Just for clarification our rink is 200X90. Not quite olympic size.

As I recall, making the span longer than 90 required the increase in supporting beanms, footings, etc. I seem to recall hearing that going from 90 to 100 would have almost doubled the structural skeleton costs.

The women's head coach would know more details as he was involved in the building at the time. My wife typed a lot of the specifications manual, and I read parts of it as as sleep aid.;)

Spec books may be the most boring thing on earth. That and code books.
