Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Lot more changes than anticipated with SNC's club this season; so it's a given ... Stout will walk away with both games this weekend ! Plus last year's goaltending situation (mediocre at best) ... & it's still the same.;)

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

With Friday coming closer by the hour the anticipation grows among us Devil's Advocates. A new season with high expectations coming from a spectacular season last year will definitely keep me on the edge of my seat until the puck drops.

This Friday will be our first test. St. Norbert College will already have one game under their belt. Win or lose they will be able to review and assess their plans before coming to the Dunn Co. Ice Palace. Whereas the Blue Devils will have to adjust on the fly.

Regardless of events leading up to this weekend, both teams will come prepared and put on a great show for everyone.

:) Hit Somebody!:)

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Back to the drawing board I guess ! Total domination tonight by the Knights. Their 3rd line was stronger than any trio out there. A bit of momentum with Stout's lone goal ... hemmed them in the whole next shift but as soon as SNC's 3rd line came on they scored again making it 3-1 & there went any hope of a comeback !!!

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Is Pischlar no longer in the team's plans??? Why was he not at least backup for yesterday's game???

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

Pischlar left the team in the middle of last week to focus on his academic career. He is no longer on the roster.

The likely depth chart is

1. Hopper (injured) --- Undergoing MRI today on his groin
2. Lescovich
3. Morgan

Mike Morgan may see time against St. Mary's on Friday night from what I hear.

Long week of practice ahead.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

CPT - Motz, Gaulrapp, Sternberg

Pischlar is THE guy for us this season. He has been waiting patiently for two years and has steadily progressed since coming on-campus. He leaned out over summer and has really been working hard at claiming the number one spot. Pischlar would be a great starter to take the reins because all of the team respects him on many levels. He has amazing work ethic both on and off the ice not only in hockey but in his studies as well. He a genuine nice guy and leads by example. He is a goaltender the team can rally around and really want to play for.

Mike Morgan who came in mid-season last year has shown some great improvement. I know coach Watkins talked to him in the past week telling him to keep working and that he has noticed his improvement and hard work... it's paying off for Morgan.

Then you have Lescovich and Hopper behind Morgan and Pischlar. Of the two, I would say the new guy Lescovich has an edge over Hopper at this point. He fits the mold that both goaltending coach Ed Roethke and coach Watkins like I think. He's big at 6"2, he's very skinny and lanky with great flex. He takes up a lot of the net and plays his angles very well. He is a classic butterfly goaltender, reminds me a lot of NHL goaltender Carey Price in his style.

I'm heading to practice this afternoon to watch and talk with Tdubz, I'll post a link here when I write up the story about his pre-season thoughts on his team. That will feed your need for info a bit! :D

Looks like things have changed a bit, eh?

Hopefully Hopper is OK and I think you guys will be fine in net this season...

Agreed. Hopefully it isn't anything too serious. I hate to see anyone limp off outside of the Old Balls QB in Minnesota.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

This weekend is just what the Blue Devils needed. A couple of non-conference games to figure out lines, gain some chemistry and get their confidence up.

UW-Stout came out flat against St. Mary's University and didn't play up to their potential in that opening period. The score was 1-0 after one. After a heated speech from Head Coach Terry Watkins, the Blue Devils got the scoring going. Mike Morgan (G) saw action between the pipes in the 3rd period. Things looked much improved over the opening weekend against SNC, but still not 'last years form' by any means.

St. Thomas came in on Saturday for what I felt would be a tougher game than St. Mary's. UW-Stout has historically handled Mary's quite easily while St. Thomas has been a bit tougher.

St. Thomas was outgunned from the drop of the puck with the Blue Devils heeding the advice of coaches by shooting the puck from all angles on the ice. The rush looked much improved including hardly any off-sides on rushes towards the Tommie's zone. The Devil's took a 2-0 lead in the 1st period as they headed into the 1st intermission. They also headed in out-shooting the Tommies.

UW-Stout opened up its old form by literally scoring at will in the first half of the second period. Snipes from the blue lines, cleaning up the trash, 2-1's and Derek Hanson on a break away, one of those shorthanded. UW-Stout had five goals in the first 13 minutes of the 2nd period.

The third period was much of the same, UW-Stout purely dominated the Tommies coasting their way to a 8-0 win. All the small things, battles in the corners, face-offs added up and really contributed to the win. I heard after the game that the St. Thomas head coach, Terry Skrypek said he's never been beaten that bad in his collegiate coaching career, purely dominated in all areas of the game.

UW-Stout looks to have figured their team out this year. Many around the country wrote UW-Stout off with their series dropped to SNC. During that series UW-Stout was out of sync, no line chemistry developed yet and there was some issues with the breakout. Coach Watkins has these kids working now like a well-oiled wheel and that offensive firepower is starting to find scoring chances and lighting the lamp.

Strap in for what appears to be one exciting run this year now that UW-Stout has 'righted the ship'

Joel Gaulrapp's & the dangerous trio's 3rd period goal

Should be a good series at CSS this weekend. With Poderzay back in net, the real key to the game is whether the Saints finish like they did against Stevens Point and Concordia or they don't like against the Johnnies.

If they do finish off scoring chances, it looks like it'll be very similar to the last 3 times these two teams faced off last year. If they don't, things are looking pretty good for Stout.

Re: UW-Stout Regular Season -- 2009-10

It was sure good to see Big Blue get back on track last weekend.

Michael, you are right that it will be an interesting weekend between Stout and CSS. What are your initial reactions to CSS's team this year? It seems like you guys have been a bit like us in that it has been a tale of two different weekends.

CSS is a well coached team that always comes to play. This is an important series for Stout and the first road action of the year. Let's hope the boys can pick up where they left off on Saturday.

We had a balanced scoring attack last weekend (8 goals from 8 different people on Sat night). It's nice to see more than the first line putting the puck in the net. That is critical for success this year.
