UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

UVM's schedule was a mess this year in the first half with all those one game weekends and/or Friday/Sunday afternoon games. I felt like that hurt the team and impaired their ability to get consistent momentum going. I suppose with this goofy 3 game schedule in HE they don't have to much choice than have a messed up schedule like that for a good chunk of the season. That is the only thing I miss from the ECAC days is the consistent Friday/Saturday night game schedule for most of the season.

I concur. I'm thinking that Sneddon wanted to have time off if Friday went awry for his low scoring (Viktor Stalberg less) squad. But atmosphere counts! I hope we start going Friday/Saturday again. Vermont should have enough confidence in its product to air it out prime time. However, I'm still not convinced we're getting the blue chippah's we need to do it up. This year's NCAA appearance was a huge bonus....build it and they will come :D

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

I doubt it. I think he would be gone already if he was going.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Kevin Shattenkirk is expected to sign with Colorado, but hasn't officially done it yet. I've seen guys from BC sign later than this too.

Well it does if you think about it some. Many players have signed and are already gone to their respective clubs, finishing up classes while playing. There is sometimes some a delay of a week or so, but ME has been in off season mode long enough such that if Nyquist was going he would have gone.

Think about it like this. Toronto was looking for a forward, and the signed Irwin from UVM, who will be in tonights line up I might add. So they want someone and now. If you were a GM and looking at potential forwards, would you approach Nyquist or Irwin first? Heck I am biased and if I was going to sign a forward I would have been talking with Nyquist.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Nyquist is drafted by Detroit, Irwin was a Free agent.

You're getting stuck on this. This statement simply isn't true. Not all underclassmen leave right when their season is over. Again, Kevin Shattenkirk as a perfect example. He's expected to sign with Colorado, but hasn't done it yet. Check out the Maine thread and I bet most still expect Nyquist to leave. I've also seen it with BC players in the past where they don't even leave until the summer time. Sometimes it takes time to negotiate or a player/team might change their mind.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Another example would be Nathan Gerbe. Season ended for him in early-mid April yet he didn't sign with Buffalo until May 6.

Gerbe

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

One problem with the schedule is that UVM cannot schedule Friday/Saturday back to back on the home weekends where they are playing two different teams on a weekend unless they are willing to play on Saturday night against a team that did not play on Friday. And that would be a considerable disadvantage. I think that is why they get stuck with a number of Friday/Sunday weekend sets - in order to give the cats that extra day to recover from the Friday night game and make it more of a fair contest.

That also gives the other team that buses in on Friday night or Saturday the appropriate travel and practice time to prepare for the Sunday game.

So, I don't see this situation improving all that much under the current HE three game system. All we can hope is that the games don't line up against the Pats/Giants and against stellar fall weather and just grin and bear it. The second half schedule is much more conducive to fans.

I see Cullity just signed with an AHL squad. Good for him.

I hope Nyquist goes (sort of, also like watching him play other HE schools)

Nyquist is drafted by Detroit...

Detroit and Colorado are in the NHL playoff hunt - as of now, both teams are in. Neither team is going to put either player on their roster and burn one of the years of their respective entry level deal. So time is on both players side, they can finish their classes and sign this spring or summer. Both players will end up in the AHL next year at the start, so what is the rush. The only reason to leave early is to play in the AHL playoffs of those organizations respective affiliates.

Irwin on the other hand, by playing in Toronto, gets to burn year 1 of his 2 year entry deal. Toronto is not making the playoffs so they can see what he brings to the table plus it gives Irwin a chance to see how much he has to work this summer to get ready for training camp. Plus, he then could go to the Marlies to finish their season if they are in the playoffs (have not looked) or return to finish classes (that is what was written that he would do).

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Irwin, played about 10 minutes of last nights game, 2 PIM 1 shot on goal. Vik scored giving him 3g in his last 2 games.

With regards to Nyquist, I had not realized he was already drafted by Detroit. They don't need him this season so I can see why he hasn't signed yet.

JD as for Gerbe, its not a wonder he was signed late, that's a poor example. Im sure most teams were trying to figure out if they wanted to sign him. Tiny forwards like that are usually in high demand no matter how good they are. See Martin St. Louis. No one wanted him either. Hopefully Gerbe follows in his footsteps and has a great NHL career. Those small highly skilled forwards bring a lot to the game. I love to watch St. Louis play, obviously because he is a UVM alum, but also because he is just a lot of fun to watch.

Anyways, I still don't think Nyquist is going anywhere. I would like to see him go as it would knock ME down tremendously, especially depending on how the goaltending situation plays out. With Nyquist still there they become a top 4 team again IMO. Without him, they fall to 6-8. But I think he stays. Just my $.02

Good summary from Ted Ryan's blog at the BFP of next years potential incoming class. Surprised that they are still looking for another D as it appears Doerring is not coming until fall of 2011. Have to believe if Medvec, Miller or Lawson leave, then that will be moved up.

Hockey Cats’ Class of ‘14 has promise
April 01, 2010 • 2:16 pm
By Ted Ryan

The University of Vermont men’s hockey team is expected to bring in another talented freshman class in September.

Under UVM and NCAA rules, head coach Kevin Sneddon is not allowed to comment on recruited student-athletes until each has been admitted to the university and signed a national letter-of-intent.

Still, many of the players have confirmed their commitments to UVM. The Class of ’14 is expected to consist of the following seven players plus one more defenseman as yet uncommitted.

The list could change with the addition of players should any current UVM underclassman decide to relinquish his college eligibility and sign a professional contract.

Here is a snapshot of the members of the Class of ’14 with the most recently available statistics:

F Connor Brickley, 18, Everett, Mass., 6-1, 193: Ranked 49th among North American skaters in the mid-season Central Scouting list, Brickley is a highly skilled forward with a hard edge. He has exceptional speed. He scored 20 goals and 41 points in 46 games for Des Moines of the USHL. Brickley was just named to the U.S. U-18 team for the world championships.

F Alex DeCenzo, 20, Hibbing, Minn., 5-10, 175: Over the past two seasons, DeCenzo has collected 31 goals and 73 points in 118 games for Tri-City of the USHL. He’s been described as a “waterbug” player with very good hands that make him a crafty playmaker.

D Arthur Griem, 19, Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., 6-3, 205: Griem is a stay-at-home defenseman who picked up one goal and eight points along with 88 penalty minutes in 41 games for the New York Apple Core of the EJHL.

F Brooks Herrington, 19, Bow, N.H., 6-4, 205: The brother of UVM sophomore defenseman Lance Herrington, Brooks Herrington is a power forward who will need to learn to use his size at the college level. He has a great shot and scored 36 goals and 83 points over the past two seasons with the N.H. Junior Monarchs of the EJHL.

F H.T. Lenz, 21, Vienna, Va., 5-10, 175: Lenz can score, picking up 18 goals and 43 points in 53 games for Des Moines (USHL), but he’s better known as a strong two-way workhorse with leadership potential.

G Alex Vazzano, 19, Trumbull, Conn., 6-2, 190: The brother of UVM sophomore goalie John Vazzano, Alex Vazzano de-committed to Union and selected Vermont after his NHL stock rose. He’s big and talented. His statistics this year for The Gunnery are hard to find but he was at 2.19, .925 in 34 games a year ago.

F Matt White, 18, McMurray, Pa., 6-2, 195: White, who de-committed to North Dakota, scored 11 goals and 26 points in two years in the Des Moines (USHL) system before returning home for his senior year, where he played for Peters Township High School and the Pittsburgh Viper Stars (45 games; 36-42-78). He’s a power forward with exceptional skill.

Class of’15: F Mike Montagna; D Blake Doerring; F Zemgus Girgensons; F Colin Markison; D Nick Luukko.

Class of’16: F Thomas Forgione; F Connor Anthoine; D Ian Spencer.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Im sure most teams were trying to figure out if they wanted to sign him.

Except that he wasn't a free agent. Buffalo owned his rights. jcarter, the sooner you realize it's ok to be wrong about something, the better off we'll be.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Nyquist has been pretty adamant that he's coming back for another year. Highly doubt they'll sign him.

OK, so I was wrong about that part. The fact remains that just because he hasn't signed already doesn't mean anything.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

I've also seen it with BC players in the past where they don't even leave until the summer time. Sometimes it takes time to negotiate or a player/team might change their mind.

Some good examples of this...

Reasoner signed quite a while after BC lost to Michigan in the title game in 1998 IIRC. I know Orpik, Kolanos, and Kobasew all signed later in the summer of 2001 and didn't give BC much time to replace them (man that next year sucked).

Then again, I'm no expert on the pro stuff, but perhaps that trend changed to earlier and earlier signing dates with college free agents and draft picks with differences in the CBAs in place now and back then. Possibly... but I'm just throwing that out there.

Jeezus christ you are adamant about some ****. Ok, Buffalo probably didn't know what to do with him. But, sometimes college players don't go off to an NHL club as soon as their team is done for the year, and because a player hasn't left doesn't necessarily mean they aren't going to, which I never said.

Nyquist hasn't left, and because of that I don't think he will be going anywhere. You don't leave one of the top 3 scorer's in the country sitting on the side lines if you are just going to bring him into the fold in 3-4 months. Now, Detroit is a highly successful program that I will defer to on this decision and maybe they will bring him in sometime over the summer. But I for one will be surprised if that's the case.

Are you happy JD? Can we move on? Can you go talk about BC on their FF thread? Are you that smitten with me so as you need to constantly be USCHO stalking me? For christ's sake man......
