UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

The stream was crisp and clean.....

I thought coach was a little subdued/unexcited for the season.
Hoped for some scoop on guys/combos he liked, etc....
Not just coach speak....'like my leadership', 'play aggressive', 'promising newcomers' yada yada....
Maybe it was the vibe in the room...

Barely any questions from media, no talk of promotions or big home games, things like that.

I guess my expectations were too high.

I mean, part of a lack of excitement might just be the fact that it doesn't feel like hockey season when it's 90F three days in a row lol. It was hot in the room too.

Re: guys he liked....I did a one on one with him (I'm doing a season preview piece for the Cynic, which comes out next Tuesday), he mentioned MOD and Colton as guys who took huge steps this summer.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Great!

Any insight to line pairings yet?

There will be a lot of guys in the stands every game......

I didn't ask. But he seemed to imply there will be mixing and matching with the large amount of depth and versatility on the roster

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

I'm wondering if the incoming freshman defensemen were threatening to compete with Abramson for ice time, and he decided his best choice was to make his move now. Maybe I'm trying to put a positive spin on things though.

I would find that hard to believe.
He was likely to be the #1 guy. His presence will be missed on and off the ice. Could have been the Captain. Oh well.
Sneddon said that O'Donnell made strides this summer but he didn't grow and will still be weak in his own end.
Massie could be a number one some day but not this year.
The new guys looked just ok as a group with Evers the only one who seemed to stand out at all in the July skates according to some of the returning forwards.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Hyped for tomorrow!

The Russian flag I got for the Den came in on Thursday so that's cool I guess.

Really looking forward to seeing the newcomers.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Also a bit of closure: Cameron Klein, who left UVM after his freshman year last year having not played in a single game, is now playing club hockey at NYU.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Colton went off the ice in a lot of pain at the end of the first period. Maybe a left arm injury? His face was bright red

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Any idea where Bowen was? Best chemistry was the Misley/Vlad line.

No clue, hopefully it's just a minor knock or something.

But holy smokes we looked great tonight, great puck movement and lots of offensive zone time after some beginning of season sloppiness. Let's hope we can keep it up against Handpass College.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Random thoughts in no order
- Sneddon said the Bowen is day-to-day in the post game interview.
- This team should score a lot of goals. There are probably 5 solid lines and the freshmen should to raise the level of competition across the board. Sounds like Sneddon has a couple of pretty set lines in mind and and the third and fourth lines are wide open and will probably change game to game.
- Harmon played well in relief of Lekkas. He swallows shots with his pads. Lekkas, on the other hand, needs to work on controlling rebounds and not directing them into the slot
- The power play and penalty kill were virtually indistinguishable. I'm guessing they will be working on the PP is week.
- Owen Grant skates really well.
- Misley, Cowans, Esposito, Kaufman, and Dzhioshvilli are fast.
- Coughlin's shot that went off the goal post probably dented it. Scoring off his own rebound was a thing of beauty.
- I tried keeping track of the lines but gave up because I think the coaches were pulling names out of a hat :)

It was Coughlin that scored off his own rebound, not O'Neil - O'Neil's goal was that beautiful bullet of a shot from the left wing.

I'll have some thoughts on the blog later.

Also for the PP being "indistinguishable from the PK"...we scored on it three times :O

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Fixed the goal reference :)

The PP gave up way too many odd man rushes because of the defense getting caught pinching in. Ross Colton should NEVER be the only defender on a 4 on 1 rush.

On the PK the forwards are collapsing back on the goalie too much and leaving the points wide open.

That's true re: the PP. Although part of it was UVM using four forwards on the PP for the first time I can remember. They had Darrar on the point with MOD

They have used forwards on the point on the PP quite a bit in the past. Puskarich last year comes to mind. I think it came about because of a lack of offensive defense men.
